Greg Monks' sister urges friends to 'stick together' in party resorts after body found in Portugal
"Before everyone left the hotel that night Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home. That is the kind of person he was." The sister of a Scots tourist who was found dead in Portugal after vanishing during a stag do has urged groups to "stick together" in party resorts. Greg Monks disappeared hours into the first night of a five-day stag trip to Albufeira. The 38-year-old became separated from pals when trying to head back to his hotel after a night on the famous club strip in the Algarve city. Greg, from Cambuslang near Glasgow, was last spotted on CCTV in a quiet residential area of Cerro de Aguia in the early hours of Wednesday, May 28 after arriving on the Tuesday evening. Tragically, after a week long search, Greg's body was found at the bottom of a ravine in the Cerro de Aguia neighbourhood on Wednesday, June 4. Now almost a week on from the devastating discovery, Greg's sister Jillian hopes her brothers story can serve as a warning to other Scots heading to party destinations, like Albufeira. Jillian told the Record: "I think it just shows in places like Albufeira everyone needs to stick together and look after each other. "His pals are absolutely devastated at what happened." Jillian revealed how her kind-hearted brother Greg made efforts to make sure his pals remembered where the hotel was and how to find it, before he tragically disappeared. She added: "Before everyone left the hotel that night Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home. "That is the kind of person he was. He was just looking after everyone else. He was so considerate." Police were able to locate Greg's body after CCTV from a local resident showed him attempting to scale a fence before he sadly fell to his death. He was found with all his belongings on him, including his wallet and phone something that makes his family certain that Greg came to no harm. Jillian said: "We don't believe that anything untoward happened. Everything the police have told us adds up. "We'll never truly know the full story. But we believe he just got lost and ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time. "It brings us some comfort knowing that Greg all had his belongings on him. He wasn't robbed, he still had his phone and his wallet, he had all his cards and cash." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The Record yesterday told how Greg's loved ones are hoping to bring him home 'this week' as they plan his repatriation back to the UK. They are then planning a huge send off for him. Greg's mum Lynne, cousin and girlfriend Nicole flew back from Portugal last night without him, with authorities in Portugal working to arrange Greg's return home. Jillian said: 'We're hoping to bring Greg home by the weekend. 'His mum, girlfriend and cousin are going to fly home tonight. They wanted to fly back with him but it has just not been possible. 'It has been the toughest time of our lives. We still can't believe what has happened. 'But we're glad we now have some sense of closure. I don't know if any of us could have coped with even another day searching for my brother. 'We couldn't eat, we couldn't sleep. It was absolute torture. 'To know Greg has been found is a slight relief. We can now bring him home and give him the send off he deserves.'

Metal bat thug branded "Bob Marley" smashed birthday reveller's jaw in brutal attack
Michael Gray went out to seek revenge on the young man who compared him to the reggae legend. A young man out celebrating his 21st birthday was subjected to a horrific attack with a metal bat which smashed his jaw. Dreadlocked thug Michael Gray apparently took offence to being called Bob Marley and went looking for revenge several hours later. He jumped out of a car as Josh Shaw walked home from a bar with his partner and viciously attacked him with the bat, knocking him unconscious. Gray, 40, of Glenrothes, was jailed for two years when he appeared for sentencing at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court. He previously admitted that on June 22 last year at Caskieberran Road, Glenrothes, he assaulted the man, repeatedly threatened him with violence, challenged him to a fight and repeatedly struck him on the head and body with a baseball bat to his severe injury and permanent impairment. Depute fiscal Sarah Smith previously told the court that the victim was out with friends for his 21st birthday and they were initially in Pinkertons pub in Glenrothes. Gray was also there with friends and his first interchange with the victim was asking if he had put an Oasis song on the jukebox. As Gray was leaving his premises the victim said, 'See you later Bob Marley'. Gray thought it was a reference to his dreadlocks and was heard saying, 'I'm gonna cave his skull in'. The two groups were later in the Styx bar and Gray angrily warned the victim 'he was not the type of person to have a laugh with and he did not know who he was messing with', added the depute. At around 1.20am Mr Shaw and his partner left the bar and began walking home when a car pulled up next to them with Gray in the front passenger seat. Gray got out of the car holding a black metal bat, which he used to strike the victim repeatedly on the head and body. He was knocked unconscious falling to the ground with passers-by calling an ambulance but a police car arrived on the scene shortly afterwards and took him to the hospital. The victim's partner managed to video part of the incident, which included Gray making death threats and a black Vauxhall Zafira then driving off. This led to Gray being traced and arrested. Mr Shaw required surgery a few days later on his broken jaw. He had a metal plate and screws inserted to hold it together. He has lost feeling in the part of his chin which was struck and has been told this will never return. He also required stitches to a cut lip. Sheriff James Williamson previously told Gray, 'This was an outrageous, unprovoked and pre-planned assault on a young man causing him significant injury.' Gray submitted his guilty plea in February but the sentencing was delayed on various occasions for reports.

Gunman paid £1,000 a time to shoot up gangland rivals' homes and businesses
Kieran Morgan has been jailed for 18 years over the shootings. A hitman was to be paid £1,000 a time for carrying out gangland gun attacks on properties linked to his paymasters' rivals as a gang war exploded. Kieran Morgan, 30, acted on the orders of 22-year-old Zaki Shazad, who was said to be operating on behalf of an unidentified gangster further up the crime ladder. A sawn-off double-barrelled shotgun was fired at a house, in front of a family at a home, and at a takeaway, where customers and staff were present, Minshull Street Crown Court heard. Manchester Evening News reports Judge Jonathan Seely said: "This is appalling criminality with all the hallmarks of a dispute between serious organised criminals." The judge said it was an incident "that perhaps 10 years ago would have been unthinkable in our cities, but is increasingly a terrifying phenomenon for the citizens of our country". As he jailed Morgan for 18 years and Shazad for 16 years over the incidents, in which nobody was hurt, he said: "This is very, very serious criminality indeed." Prosecutors told how the three shootings took place between March and April 2023. The first unfolded on March 12 on Doric Avenue in Heald Green, Stockport. Morgan was wearing a mask and dark clothing when he fired a shotgun at the house. A homemade explosive device was then thrown towards the property, but it bounced off a wall before Morgan picked it up and threw it at a higher trajectory, where it 'went off like a firework'. Morgan then fled the scene in a Mercedes. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. The second shooting happened in broad daylight at a house on Wilmslow Road, on April 21, when an innocent family including a 10-year-old child were packing up their car for Eid celebrations at a neighbouring home. Morgan arrived at the scene in the afternoon with a hold-all bag, containing the shotgun. Wearing a face mask, he opened fire towards the property. Nobody was hurt , but there was damage to the house. The third shooting was at the Drip burger bar on Kingsway nine days later, on April 30. Morgan entered the restaurant, immediately firing one shot before firing another soon after. One hit a wall next to a TV, and the other hit the counter. Staff were behind the counter at the time and customers were in the front of the restaurant. Prosecutor David Farley said those inside were 'clearly and understandably terrified'. Morgan fled on a bike. Shazad was the 'organiser' of the shootings, prosecutors said. Messages sent between him and Morgan on Snapchat show that Morgan was to be paid £1,000 by him for the 'jobs'. Shazad, of Levenshulme, was found guilty of conspiring to possess a firearm with intent to endanger life. Morgan, of Chadderton, pleaded guilty to the same offence. Shazad was also sentenced after he was caught trying to smuggle in cannabis to a relative who was in HMP Berwyn in North Wales. He pleaded guilty to conveying a list A article into prison and possessing cannabis. Defending Morgan, Keith Harrison said the defendant has suffered from 'recurring mental health problems'. For Shazad, David Bentley said that he was involved in assisting Morgan but that he was not a 'Mr Big'. Morgan was declared a 'dangerous' offender and handed an extended sentence. He will serve two-thirds of the 18 year prison term in custody and he was ordered to observe an extra five years on licence. Following the hearing, Detective Inspector Lee Newburn said: "Violence, particularly this kind of revenge violence, will not be tolerated on the streets of Manchester. "We have seen two dangerous individuals locked up for their parts in a number of firearms discharges targeting properties where innocent people were present. It is miraculous that no-one was seriously injured during these firearms discharges. "But they could very easily have been. One of the victims of these shootings has described to me how scared she now is to go out in public and just how shaken she is about what happened. Nobody should be made to feel like this. "We continue to work very closely with the communities in and around Greater Manchester to ensure that we protect them from this kind of violence, and we are grateful for the intelligence that we receive from them in relation to illegal activity on a daily basis. "We also work closely with the Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit (VRU), which is a multi-agency team we are part of, and we seek to prevent violence from occurring by addressing underlying issues and educating those who may be at risk of re-offending. "We do this by providing valuable input in prevention work that our partners are carrying out on an ongoing basis, working behind the scenes to manage serious incidents before they occur. "That is why we are asking, if you know anyone who is using, or possesses, an illegal firearm, we urge you to get in touch with us as, for each firearm we recover, that's potentially a life saved."
