Russia launches deadly strike on Kharkiv as peace talks stall

KHARKIV : Fresh Russian strikes on Ukraine's northeastern city of Kharkiv killed three people and wounded 60 including children early today, authorities said, as Moscow pushed ahead with its relentless attacks after rejecting an unconditional ceasefire.
Russia has fired record numbers of drones and missiles at Ukraine over recent weeks, escalating three years of daily bombardments as it outlines hardline demands – rejected by Kyiv as 'ultimatums' – to halt its invasion.
The northeastern city of Kharkiv, just 30km from the Russian border, again bore the brunt of the attack.
'Seventeen strikes by enemy UAVs (drones) were carried out in two districts of the city tonight,' Kharkiv mayor Igor Terekhov said on Telegram.
Kharkiv regional governor Oleg Synegubov said three people had been killed.
AFP journalists in the city saw damaged apartment blocks, burnt out cars and streets strewn with debris after the attacks.
Olena Khoruzheva had run into the hallway – away from the windows – with her two children when she heard the incoming drones.
'The younger one lay on the floor, hands on his head. I was on top of him,' the 41-year-old pharmacist told AFP.
'We heard it approaching. Silence, and then we were thrown against the wall… there were more explosions, then we heard people shouting 'Help! Help!'
Her 65-year-old neighbour was one of those killed in the attack.
Early this morning, an AFP reporter saw first responders removing the body of one killed resident from a block of apartments in a black body bag.
Stalled peace talks
Ukraine's air force said Russia had fired 85 drones overnight – fewer than in recent days.
US President Donald Trump has been urging the two sides to strike a peace deal
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has in turn called on the west to up the pressure on Russia with hard-hitting economic sanctions that he says would limit its capacity to wage war.
He is expected to press that message with Trump and European leaders at a G7 summit in Canada, which kicks off on Sunday.
Two rounds of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine have failed to yield a breakthrough in ending the war.
Russia has rejected calls for an unconditional ceasefire and demanded that Ukraine give up its territory and bid to join Nato.
But the two sides agreed to swap more than 1,000 prisoners of war and hand over the bodies of dead soldiers, swapping groups of captured soldiers on Monday and yesterday.
The attacks came after Russia pummelled Kharkiv on Saturday in what Terekhov had called 'the most powerful attack' on the city since the start of the war.
Kyiv has hit back with retaliatory drone strikes on Russia, with Moscow's defence ministry saying 32 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight.
Both sides have downplayed any chance of progress at talks in Istanbul.
While not rejecting diplomacy, Zelensky called it 'pointless' to hold further talks with the current Russian delegation – whom he previously dismissed as 'empty heads' – since they could not agree to a ceasefire.
Russian President Vladimir Putin last week called Kyiv a 'terrorist' regime and questioned why he should negotiate with them.

Russian troop advancement in Sumy region stopped says Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that Ukraine is unable to regain all of its territory by military force. (AP pic) KYIV : Ukrainian forces have stopped Russian troops advancing in the northeastern Sumy region and are now battling to regain control along the border with Russia, president Volodymyr Zelensky said. In remarks released for publication by his office today, Zelensky said that Moscow has amassed about 53,000 troops in the direction of Sumy. 'We are leveling the position. The fighting there is along the border. You should understand that the enemy has been stopped there. And the maximum depth at which the fighting takes place is 7km from the border,' Zelensky said. Reuters could not verify the battlefield reports. Russia's troops have been focusing their assaults in the eastern Donetsk region. But since the start of the month, they have intensified their attacks in the north-east, announcing plans to create a so-called 'buffer zone' in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. The Russian war in Ukraine is in its fourth year, but it has intensified in recent weeks. Ukraine conducted an audacious drone attack this month that took out multiple aircraft inside Russia and also hit the bridge connecting Russia to the annexed Crimean peninsula using underwater explosives. Moscow ramped up its air assaults after the attack. Zelensky said that Ukrainian troops had maintained their defensive lines along more than 1,000km of the frontline. He also dismissed Moscow's claims that Russian troops had crossed the administrative border into the central Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk. Zelensky said that Russia was sending small assault groups 'to get one foot on the administrative border' and make a picture or a video, but these attacks were repelled. Dnipropetrovsk borders three regions that are partially occupied by Russia – Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Russia now controls about one-fifth of Ukrainian territory. Zelensky acknowledged that Ukraine was unable to regain all of its territory by military force and reiterated his pleas for stronger sanctions on Russia to force Moscow into negotiations to end the war. Two rounds of peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow in Istanbul produced few results that could lead to a ceasefire and a broader peace deal. The two sides agreed only to exchange prisoners of war. Several swaps have already been conducted this month, and Zelensky said he expected them to continue until June 20 or 21. In separate remarks made on communications platform Telegram today, he said that a new group of Ukrainian prisoners of war had come home as part of another swap with Russia. 'We continue to take our people out of Russian captivity. This is the fourth exchange in a week,' Zelensky wrote on his personal account. Ukrainian officials responsible for exchanging prisoners said the vast majority of the soldiers released in the exchange had been held captive since 2022 with many captured during the defence of Mariupol. The officials said Kyiv had, meanwhile, received the bodies of 1,200 of its soldiers killed in the war with Russia. The bodies were handed over to Ukraine on Friday. 'The agreement is that the exchanges will be completed, and the sides will discuss the next step,' Zelensky said.

Indonesia's President Prabowo receives call from Trump ahead of Russia visit

INDONESIA: President Prabowo Subianto received a 15-minute phone call from United States President Donald Trump (pic) on Thursday (June 12) evening, during which both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and supporting global stability, just days before Prabowo is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "As leaders of two major countries, President Prabowo and President Trump agreed to deepen cooperation between Indonesia and the US,' Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said in a statement on Friday (June 13). 'Both reiterated their support for efforts to maintain global peace and stability'. The call marked the second conversation between the two presidents since Trump's re-election in 2024. They last spoke in November, when Prabowo congratulated Trump on his victory. Thursday's call came ahead of Prabowo's state visit to Moscow, where he is scheduled to meet Putin on Wednesday. The visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-Russia diplomatic relations and is expected to result in a joint declaration and at least three memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on cooperation. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Rolliansyah Soemirat confirmed that the president would not attend the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Canada on Tuesday, citing a scheduling conflict. Prabowo is set to travel to Singapore on Monday before continuing on to Russia. Rolliansyah noted that the Moscow visit had been planned since 2024. Prabowo's diplomatic balancing act comes amid escalating tensions between Washington and Moscow over Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump recently described Putin as 'crazy' for intensifying attacks on Ukrainian cities, warning that such aggression could lead to Russia's downfall. Despite the geopolitical strain, Prabowo has maintained Jakarta's ties with Moscow, particularly in trade and defense procurement. He also held talks with Putin last year, ahead of his presidential inauguration in October. - The Jakarta Post/ANN
