Eight people injured in Russian drones attack

Kyiv - (Saba): At least eight people were injured in an attack by Russian drones on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. The military governor of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Synyehubov, explained via Telegram that the attack resulted in eight injuries, including two young men. In the same context, Igor Terekhov, the mayor of Kharkiv, said that the attack targeted "one of the municipal institutions" in the city, using at least eight combat drones, without revealing the nature of the facility or revealing further details. He added that the attack caused a large fire at the targeted site, while extinguishing operations and initial damage assessments are ongoing. Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, has witnessed an escalation in the pace of Russian attacks in recent weeks, amid ongoing military operations since the outbreak of the conflict on February 24, 2022. Ukrainian youths perform Nazi salute at Holocaust memorial (PHOTOS)

The authorities in Ukraine have launched a criminal investigation after three young people were photographed performing Nazi salutes at a Holocaust memorial in Kharkov, sparking outrage from local officials and Jewish organizations. The incident occurred at the Drobitsky Yar memorial site, where up to 20,000 Jews were executed during the Nazi occupation during World War II. Photos showing the three youths, with two clearly giving the Nazi salute on the steps of the memorial, were widely circulated on local Telegram channels last weekend. Kharkov Mayor Igor Terekhov condemned the act as 'a conscious desecration of memory, of humanity, and of Kharkov itself.' 'Drobitsky Yar is not just a place – it is a wound in the heart of Kharkov. It is silence that screams with the pain of thousands of innocent lives,' Terekhov wrote in a statement on his Telegram channel on Wednesday. These three are not 'just kids,' it's not a 'joke,' not a 'mistake.' This is a deliberate act of mockery… I appeal to law enforcement – find them. Quickly. Publicly. And ensure that these young Nazis are punished appropriately for their actions. The United Jewish Community of Ukraine also condemned the incident and filed a formal complaint with law enforcement. The Kharkov regional police confirmed a pre-trial investigation is underway and said they are working to identify and locate the individuals involved. If convicted, the suspects could face up to five years in prison. Drobitsky Yar is one of dozens of Holocaust massacre sites across Ukraine, where German forces and local collaborators murdered around 1.5 million Jews during World War II. Russia has consistently accused Ukraine's leadership of embracing neo-Nazi ideology and whitewashing known WWII-era collaborators. When the conflict between Moscow and Kiev escalated into open hostilities in February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin cited the 'denazification' of Ukraine as one of the primary objectives of his military operation, alongside demilitarization and neutrality. Top Russian officials have repeatedly pointed out that the current Ukrainian authorities openly celebrate Nazi figures, most notably Stepan Bandera, a Ukrainian nationalist who collaborated with the Third Reich. Bandera has been officially hailed as a national hero in Ukraine since 2010, with nationalists regularly marking his birthday on January 1 with torchlit marches and massive demonstrations.

Overnight strikes reported across Ukraine

The Russian military has launched a wave of missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, with Kiev facing the most powerful attack, local officials have said. The Russian Ministry of Defense has yet to comment. Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klimenko said early on Thursday that Moscow had launched 'a massive combined attack' targeting Kiev, Zhytomyr, Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov, Poltava, Khmelnytsky, and Sumy regions, as well as Ukrainian-controlled parts of Russia's Zaporozhye Region. He reported that approximately 40 fires were extinguished by first responders overnight, with Kiev suffering the most significant impact. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine confirmed the capital was the hardest hit, reporting that nine people were killed and 63 injured. It said that 'fires broke out in garages, an administrative building, and non-residential buildings,' adding that falling debris set fire to cars and dry grass. In Kharkov, Mayor Igor Terekhov said there had been 19 strikes, including seven by cruise missiles and 12 by kamikaze drones. He added that an unnamed manufacturing enterprise was hit in the attack. Russian military blogger Kirill Fyodorov claimed that the attack on Kharkov targeted the Malyshev factory, which produces various types of heavy equipment and is part of Ukraine's state-owned defense corporation, Ukroboronprom. He also reported drone strikes 'in the area of the Kharkov airport.' In Pavlograd, Dnepropetrovsk Region, an industrial enterprise was damaged in the strikes, with no casualties reported, according to Sergey Lysak, the head of the local administration. Ukraine's national railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, noted that technical tracks and administrative and technical buildings were damaged in Kiev and Kharkov regions. Russia routinely launches drone and missile attacks on Ukraine's military-related targets, maintaining that its operations never target civilian facilities.

'Massive' Russian missile attack kills nine in Kyiv

24 Apr 2025 12:27PM (Updated: 24 Apr 2025 02:31PM) KYIV: At least nine people were killed and more than 60 wounded in a "massive" missile attack on Kyiv early on Thursday (Apr 24), Ukraine's state emergency service said, among the deadliest attacks on the capital of the three-year war. Ukrainian authorities issued an alert for a missile attack, and AFP journalists heard explosions across the capital. "Russia has launched a massive combined strike on Kyiv," Ukraine's state emergency service said on Telegram, updating the toll. "According to preliminary data, nine people were killed, 63 injured," it said, adding that among the 42 people hospitalised, six were children. Five districts across the capital suffered damage, including fires in garages and administrative buildings that have been extinguished. The state emergency service said the attack also damaged residential buildings. "The search for people under the rubble is underway," it said. In a bomb shelter set up in a basement of a residential building, over a dozen residents gathered after the air alert started, an AFP journalist witnessed. Kyiv was last hit by missiles in early April when at least three people were wounded. It has been the target of sporadic attacks since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. In Ukraine's east, the city of Kharkiv was hit by seven missiles early Thursday, city mayor Igor Terekhov said, adding later that it was "under attack by cruise missiles for the second time in one night". "One of the most recent strikes hit a densely populated residential area ... Two people were injured there. The inspection of the sites of enemy strikes is underway," Terekhov said, urging the city's residents to "be careful". Andriy Yermak, a top aide to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said Russia was attacking Kyiv, Kharkiv and other cities "with missiles and drones right now". "Putin shows only a desire to kill," he said. "The attacks on civilians must stop."
