Political battle over Vizhinjam port credit flares ahead of PM Modi's inauguration
The political tug-of-over over claiming credit for the realisation of the Vizhinjam International Seaport continued to rage on, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioning the country's first dedicated transshipment port on Friday (May 2, 2025).
Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan, who opted out of the ceremony, shared a video of former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's speech made in the Kerala Assembly on the Vizhinjam port on June 8, 2015.
His Facebook post read: 'Oommen Chandy is no longer with us. Yet, he lives on in the hearts of the people as a chapter of history that cannot be erased. Those who deliberately try to forget or rewrite history are the ones who fear even the memories of Oommen Chandy. Wishing all the best to the Vizhinjam Port.'
He had accused the Left Democratic Front (LDF)-led State government of making attempts to erase the legacy of Oommen Chandy.
In his Assembly speech, Chandy declared the long-cherished dream of the Vizhinjam port was finally becoming a reality. He emphasised that the project would advance while safeguarding the interests of the State.
'We welcome any constructive criticism,' he had stated. 'However, the Opposition's efforts to derail the project by making allegations of corruption will not succeed.'
Earlier in the day, Congress leader M. Vincent, who represents the Kovalam Assembly constituency where the port is located, paid tribute at the tomb of the former Chief Minister in Kottayam. Accompanied by Chandy's son and fellow MLA Chandy Oommen, Mr. Vincent offered prayers and hailed the late Congress leader as the 'father of the Vizhinjam Port'.
Speaking to the media before leaving to take part in the ceremony in Thiruvananthapuram, Mr. Vincent credited Oommen Chandy's unwavering commitment for making the project a reality, despite sustained political opposition from the LDF. He added that the former Chief Minister not only completed all project formalities, but also overcame legal challenges by approaching the Supreme Court on various occasions.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, however, credited the achievement to the resolve of the government. In a Facebook post on Thursday evening, he wrote: 'As this (LDF) government enters its tenth year, the Vizhinjam International Seaport is set to be commissioned tomorrow as a gift to every Malayali. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicating the port to the nation tomorrow (May 2), Kerala is marking its place on the global maritime map.
'This moment signals the dawn of a new era of development. It is the willpower of the Kerala government, along with the steadfast support of the people, that has turned this long-cherished dream into a reality,' he said.

No guarantee when Cong govt will fall, says R Ashoka
Mangaluru: Opposition leader R Ashoka said that there is no guarantee for the Congress govt in Karnataka. "Only two years remain, but there is no guarantee when this govt will fall. All police stations here have been made Congress stations. Mangaluru City police commissioner and the SP of Dakshina Kannada were transferred only to ensure that the police department dances to the tunes of the govt," Ashoka told reporters here on Monday. "The BJP delegation led by BY Vijayendra has sought answers from police officials on the legal grounds on which police knock on the doors of Hindu activists during midnight. Police should serve notice before conducting such raids. Police do not take initiatives to deport Pakistan and Bangladesh nationals," he said. He suspected the involvement of anti-national elements from Kerala and Pakistan in the murder of Suhas Shetty. "The banned PFI is involved in it, and there is a need to find the source of their funding. We are confident that the NIA will bring all facts to light," he said. In response to a query on MLC BK Hariprasad's statements questioning the necessity of an NIA probe into the murder of Suhas Shetty, as he was a rowdy-sheeter, Ashoka said that there are many definitions for a rowdy-sheeter. "How many cases does DK Shivakumar have, and didn't he go to jail? In how many cases has Rahul Gandhi obtained bail? The court should decide who is a convict," he said.

Lessons to be learnt, may come up with act for gatherings, says D.K. Shivakumar
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Monday (June 9, 2025) said the state has learnt lessons from the recent stampede and is considering bringing in an act to manage future public gatherings. 'There are lessons to be learnt. We will come out with a plan; we have policies for future crowds also. We have to come up with an act; that is what we are also looking for. It is a lesson which we have to learn,' Mr. Shivakumar told reporters after meeting Municipal Corporation of Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh. Attacking opposition parties criticising the Congress-led Karnataka Government, he said, 'They are politicising the dead bodies. I am sorry for them.' On June 4, the celebrations for the RCB's first-ever IPL win turned tragic as 11 people died and more than 56 were injured in a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Since the incident, a political slugfest is underway with the opposition BJP targeting the Congress-led government for not handling the situation properly. Opposition parties are demanding the resignation of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister on this issue. Mr. Shivakumar was in the national capital to attend a meeting with the MCD officials to discuss urban governance, town planning, and solid waste management.
