Tech glitch: BPL card application process suspended in Kodagu
Madikeri: The state govt's suspension of the process to apply for a BPL card has left thousands of potential beneficiaries in a difficult situation. Currently, 1,127 submitted applications in Kodagu are pending for govt approval, while 496 applications were rejected for various reasons, according to sources in the food, civil supplies and consumer affairs department.

BPL cards are crucial for accessing various govt schemes and are allocated to economically and socially disadvantaged individuals. The Congress govt's guarantee schemes have led to an increased demand for these cards.
The online portal for BPL card applications has faced technical difficulties for the past two years, preventing proper acceptance of applications. This situation has caused disappointment amongst many people.
Previously, govt conducted operations against unauthorised BPL cards, suspending those obtained improperly. This action has resulted in both ineligible and eligible cardholders losing their cards due to technical issues.
Efforts have continued to identify and restore cards to eligible individuals. The application process has remained stagnant for an extended period. Despite accepting applications, only a limited number received approval, with many still awaiting their cards.
The process faced interruptions for four years due to technical issues.
In 2023, 529 applications received approval, with no subsequent approvals granted. According to official records, the district has 1,47,903 ration cardholders, comprising 9,428 Antyodaya, 1,01,247 BPL, and 37,228 APL cardholders.
Over four years, 7,781 new applications were accepted online, with 6,158 receiving govt approval. Currently, new applications cannot be submitted.

However, local authorities may recommend cases based on medical emergencies, provided proper medical certification is furnished.
The govt has initiated surveys to identify ineligible cardholders. Cards will be cancelled for individuals with annual incomes exceeding Rs 1.20 lakh, land holdings over 3 hectares, house ownership above 1,000 sq ft, govt employees, and taxpayers.

1 2 Vijayawada: Thousands of daily workers in Chimakurthy, a granite town in Prakasam district, are struggling to find work as small and medium-sized granite polishing units face the threat of closure due to the entry of big companies into the polishing segment. Each big firm is handling around 1 to 1.5 lakh cubic meters of stock, equivalent to the stock processed by nearly 15-20 small firms. According to sources, around 20 big companies have started operations in Prakasam district, each with the capacity to process about 1.5 lakh cubic meters of stone. This means that just 20 firms are processing a volume equivalent to that of 200 small companies. The big firms have the capacity to handle even more stock in the future due to their advanced machinery, which requires significantly less manpower. Each big unit is reportedly procuring over 150-200 containers of granite per month, equivalent to the entire stock procured by all the small units combined. The granite quarry owners are also supporting the big firms, reportedly making advance payments of Rs 2-4 crore per month. The small polishing unit owners are struggling to survive, and one owner, Raghunatha Reddy, stated that the entry of big firms with advanced machinery and their influence over quarry managements has crippled the industry. The small units cannot survive unless govt intervenes and provides them with some stock.

We've pushed back 330 illegal foreigners, none of them has returned: Assam CM
Guwahati, June 9 (UNI) Iterating the BJP-led Assam government's stern stand on Bangladeshi citizens entering or living in India illegally, state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday informed the Assembly that the government has pushed back almost 330 such unauthorised foreigners, and none of them has returned. 'It is not possible for them to return, and we are firm on this. And this pushback will be intensified, it will be expedited. The way illegal immigrants have entered the state from Bangladesh and Pakistan, we have to be more proactive to keep the state safe," said Sarma. The Chief Minister was replying to a demand by opposition members, including Congress' Debabrata Saikia and AIUDF's Ashraful Hussain to discuss on the issue of National Register of Citizens (NRC). While raising the issue, Saikia said that while the government has claimed to have pushed back illegal foreigners, some of them again entered Assam, making the government's stand vague on the issue. The Chief Minister further informed the House that the state government has also decided to reinforce the Illegal (Expulsion from Assam) Act 1950. "Under the Illegal Expulsion Act 1950, the District Commissioner, if he is reasonably convinced that a certain individual is a foreigner, can remove that individual without referring a case to the Tribunal," he said. The Chief Minister said the government has taken inspiration from former Chief Minister Bimala Prasad Chaliha, who had pushed back illegal immigrants. 'We are taking inspiration from the good works of the Congress,' he said while referring to Chaliha, who was a Congress Chief Minister. "There are two ways to identify illegal immigrants in Assam — one is the Tribunal and the other is the Illegal Expulsion Act 1950. There the word 'push back'is not there, but 'remove' is there," he added Expressing his concern over the issue, the Chief Minister further said that the government has found out almost 2600 Facebook accounts, which were operated from Islamabad, Riyadh and Saudi Arab. "They don't even welcome Rahul Gandhi, but welcome one particular individual from Assam. And I have documents, within the next ten to 12 days I'll provide some information about such accounts to the press,' he said. 'These accounts post only on two occasion, either on Palestine or on Assam, nothing else. I am not saying that the Muslims of Assam are not indigenous. Indigenous is a secular definition. ... Calcutta High Court reserves verdict on petition against state's aid to dismissed non-teaching staff
Kolkata, June 9 (UNI): The Calcutta High Court on Monday reserved its judgment on a petition challenging the West Bengal government's recently introduced scheme that offers monetary assistance to non-teaching staff dismissed following a Supreme Court verdict. Justice Amrita Sinha reserved her decision on the petition, which opposes the state's plan to pay ex-gratia amounts of Rs 25,000 to Group C and Rs 20,000 to Group D employees. During the case hearing, Justice Singh questioned the state as to why the decision to grant the allowance was taken so hastily, without any discussion or scrutiny, following the Supreme Court's verdict. Justice Sinha also raised questions about the allowance amount. Addressing the state, she asked, "Why were the amounts set at Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000? On what basis were these figures determined?" The West Bengal government had launched the scheme to provide temporary financial relief and social security on humanitarian grounds to families affected by the dismissals. The scheme applies to Group C and D non-teaching staff who were recruited through the 2016 selection process conducted by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) and have lost their jobs because of Supreme Court order. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, announcing the ex-gratia payments had said that the aid was a one-time measure aimed at supporting those left jobless after the Supreme Court's decision earlier this month in connection with the cash-for-jobs scam. The crisis began on April 3 when a Supreme Court bench led by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar upheld a Calcutta High Court order dismissing 25,753 teaching and non-teaching staff from state-run and aided schools. The apex court concluded that the entire 2016 recruitment process had been tainted by large-scale fraud and manipulation. While the court later allowed secondary school teachers (Classes IX–XII) to return to classrooms temporarily, it made no such concession for Group C and D employees. It also ordered the state to complete a fresh recruitment process by December 31. Meanwhile, the state has filed a review petition against the Supreme Court's ruling. 'Since a review petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, how long will the allowance continue to be paid?,' Justice Sinha asked.
