Tech glitch: BPL card application process suspended in Kodagu
Madikeri: The state govt's suspension of the process to apply for a BPL card has left thousands of potential beneficiaries in a difficult situation. Currently, 1,127 submitted applications in Kodagu are pending for govt approval, while 496 applications were rejected for various reasons, according to sources in the food, civil supplies and consumer affairs department. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now BPL cards are crucial for accessing various govt schemes and are allocated to economically and socially disadvantaged individuals. The Congress govt's guarantee schemes have led to an increased demand for these cards. The online portal for BPL card applications has faced technical difficulties for the past two years, preventing proper acceptance of applications. This situation has caused disappointment amongst many people. Previously, govt conducted operations against unauthorised BPL cards, suspending those obtained improperly. This action has resulted in both ineligible and eligible cardholders losing their cards due to technical issues. Efforts have continued to identify and restore cards to eligible individuals. The application process has remained stagnant for an extended period. Despite accepting applications, only a limited number received approval, with many still awaiting their cards. The process faced interruptions for four years due to technical issues. In 2023, 529 applications received approval, with no subsequent approvals granted. According to official records, the district has 1,47,903 ration cardholders, comprising 9,428 Antyodaya, 1,01,247 BPL, and 37,228 APL cardholders. Over four years, 7,781 new applications were accepted online, with 6,158 receiving govt approval. Currently, new applications cannot be submitted. Pest infection affects coffee plantations, growers burn diseased plants
1 2 Madikeri: The practice of uprooting and burning Arabica coffee plants affected by the white stem borer infestation has become common in plantations in North Kodagu, where Arabica coffee is grown the most. This pest is attacking the crop plants, and the growers lose the plants along with the crop every year. The white stem borer infestation in coffee plantations reached its peak due to the increasing heat in the summer this year. The infestation of the insects on the Arabica plants is alarming the growers. The work of uprooting and burning the diseased coffee plants is currently visible, as it is the only method to stop the spread. Some people are storing the stems of such plants near the estate, resulting in white stem borers infecting other healthy plants. Experts have advised that the harvested plants should be burned immediately or transported to a distant area. The plants are being uprooted, and new plants are being planted in Shantalli, Bettadalli, Haraga, Kiragandur, Thakeri, Hanagallu, Aigoor, Chaudlu, Doddamalte, Shanivarasanthe, Somwarpet, Ganagu, and Alur Siddapura villages. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo KK Sudhakar, a grower from Tholurushettalli village, said, "Keeping coffee plantations healthy is impossible as yielding plants are being destroyed. Codava council urges separate census code for Kodavas
Madikeri: A memorandum was sent to the Union minister for home affairs, the registrar general, and Census Commissioner of India by the Codava National Council (CNC). The organisation president, NU Nachappa, welcomed the Union govt's decision and announcement regarding the conduct of a caste-wise census along with the General Census Enumeration 2025, which was originally due in 2021. Meanwhile, in the memorandum, CNC demands and urges the inclusion of a separate code and column as part of the social engineering process for the minuscule, micro, indigenous, mono-ethnic warrior clan of Kodavas while conducting the caste-wise census along with the General Census Enumeration 2025. Nachappa opines that the Kodava community believes a separate code and column in the general census, along with caste census enumeration, will facilitate their social engineering process. The benefits include accurate representation. This will enable the govt to understand the community's specific needs and develop targeted policies for their social and economic development. This will also help protect the Kodava community's unique identity and entity. As a mono-ethnological community, the Kodavas have a distinct cultural and historical identity that deserves recognition and protection. The Kodavas' warrior heritage is an integral part of their identity, and accurate representation in the census will help preserve their cultural legacy, explained Nachappa.

Akhila Kodava Samaja urges CM to induct Ponnanna into cabinet
Madikeri: A delegation of the Akhila Kodava Samaja , based in Virajpet, met chief minister on Friday evening in Mysuru. They submitted a memorandum requesting the induction of Virajpet MLA and chief minister's legal adviser, Ajjikuttira S Ponnanna , into the cabinet. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Kodagu was a state until 1956. Since its merger with Mysuru state, development has slowed down. The district had three assembly constituencies earlier, but now it has come down to two," the memorandum read. "The Kodava community has been deprived of political and govt posts for several years. They have been marginalised by the previous govts for one reason or another. For almost two decades, no Kodava person was given a ministerial position. Kodagu is plagued by floods, landslides, and human- animal conflicts during the monsoon season. In fact, many villages still do not have roads. The roads that exist are not suitable for vehicular traffic," it said. "Kodagu district, represented by AS Ponnanna, the MLA of Virajpet constituency, who belongs to the Kodava community, a primitive minority, is interested in the overall development of the district with cooperation from the present govt and the chief minister. We request the chief minister to take Ponnanna into the state cabinet," they said in the memorandum. Akhila Kodava Samaja president Paradanda Subramani Kaveriappa led the delegation.
