Clifton former recreation director and teacher Thomas Mullin dies. Some call him the GOAT.

For New England, Tom Brady is the GOAT. For Edmonton, it's Wayne Gretzky. For many in Clifton, it's Thomas Mullin.
Though nowhere nearly as recognizable as Brady or Gretzky, Mullin, 82, who died last Thursday, left a lasting impact on the people of Clifton.
"He's the greatest of all time" Clifton Recreation Director Debbie Oliver said Monday after returning from Mullin's funeral. "There's never been one before Tom. There's never been one after."
Mullin's greatest contributions, she said, were decency, integrity and reliability, which in Mullin's case were not measured in days or years but in decades. He served as a recreation commissioner for 50 years, and to her knowledge, Tom and his wife, Joan, never missed a fishing derby, and they were mainstays of a host of other events.
"Tom is one the most dedicated, compassionate, honest, dependable people I have had the pleasure of having in my life," Oliver said during the dedication of the Thomas Mullin Playground in Washington Park last June.
Mullin moved from Paterson to Clifton's Washington Avenue with his family in 1953. He lived there for 72 years. Although he and his wife had no children, he left a legacy by affecting the lives of hundreds over the years.
He received a bachelor of arts degree from St. Peter's University and a master of arts from Fordham University and joined the Clifton High School staff as a French teacher in 1968.
For 32 years, Mullin taught foreign languages, French, English and Russian, at Clifton High School before retiring as the department head in 2000.
Beginning in 1970, Mullin taught English as a second language at Clifton's night school. His students say he had a profound influence on their lives.
'My friend Zosia and I had just arrived in the US and enrolled in Mullin's ESL course," Irene Andruch recalled in a 2016 article published in the Clifton Merchant magazine. "He was an excellent teacher with a great sense of humor ... He was very welcoming and spoke to us in Polish, which made me feel very comfortable."
Andruch's son Ihor said Mullin played a crucial role in his development, too. Ihor's father died when he was 7, and he often was without direction.
"He was incredible," Ihor said of Mullin, who he said served as a mentor during his high school years. "When you are lost, you don't know what to do. He put me on the right path."

After 50 years as a recreation commissioner, Mullin stepped down about a year ago.
Over that time he taught both adults and kids, established Youth Week, and did much to raise the profile of the Clifton Education Foundation. In 2001, he received the Clifton Friend of the Recreation Board award, and, in 2018, the City Council recognized him for his many years of service, as did the late Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. last June.
As a member of the St. Philip the Apostle Knights of Columbus, he was also on the Knights of Columbus Scholarship Committee in support of the Msgr. Peter Doody Scholarship Fund. He received a special appreciation award in 2015 for his many contributions.
Mullin taught an AARP Safe Driving Course for 10 years and methodology classes for the United States Power Squadrons. Until recently, he was involved in the Vessel Safety Inspection program in conjunction with the United States Coast Guard.
Mullin is survived by his wife, Joan, as well as family members, friends and the many students whose lives he touched throughout his career. His peers say he will be remembered as a champion of education and civic responsibility and remained active until his death.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clifton Education Foundation, P.O. Box 2071, Clifton, NJ 07015 cliftoneducationfoundation.org or the Msgr. Peter Doody Scholarship Fund, c/o St. Philip Knights of Columbus, 797 Valley Road, Clifton, NJ 07013.

👏 New signings shine as Liverpool win on Premier League return

Current champion, Liverpool debuted in the Premier League 2025/26 with a 4-2 win over Bournemouth, at Anfield, on Friday (15). The night was full of beautiful and emotional tributes to Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident, in early July. Despite the excitement, the game also had room for a possible racism case against Semenyo. According to information from the press present at Anfield, a racial offense from the wheelchair sector caused the match to be paralyzed by referee Anthony Taylor. The Premier League's own profile confirmed the racism complaint at Anfield and promised an investigation into the incident. "Tonight's match between Liverpool Football Club and AFC Bournemouth was temporarily interrupted during the first half after a report of discriminatory abuse from the crowd, directed at Antoine Semenyo, from Bournemouth. This is in line with the Premier League's on-field anti-discrimination protocol. The incident at Anfield will now be fully investigated. We offer our full support to the player and both clubs. Racism has no place in our sport, nor in any place in society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure that our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone". ⚽ The game With the ball rolling, still in the first half, Ekitike - a reinforcement of 90 million euros (around R$ 567 million) - received the ball, gave a dribble at speed to enter the area and had a lot of calm to open the scoring. In the celebration, the 23-year-old French striker - who scored his first Premier League goal - made the numbers 2 and 0 with his hands in tribute to Diogo Jota's number 20 jersey. After the interval, just three minutes in, Ekitike provided the assist in the area for Gakpo, who carried the ball from the left to the middle and finished low, in the corner, to increase the lead. Again, in the celebration, the same tribute to Diogo Jota. However, Bournemouth did not give up with the disadvantage on the scoreboard. And who sought the reaction was precisely Semenyo. In a spectacular counter-attack, Brooks received at speed on the left and crossed to Semenyo, who finished first to reduce the deficit. In the celebration, he picked up the ball and kissed his right arm. Perhaps, a response to the possible racist offenses suffered in the first half. And, in the final stretch of the exciting match, Semenyo received the ball from Traoré in the defensive field and advanced at speed, without being bothered, until he removed the marking at the entrance of the area and hit Alisson's contrapé to equalize. However, in the last minute of regular time, Chiesa - another reinforcement for the attack - picked up the rebound in the area to decree Liverpool's victory. Finally, in the additions, after a long ball from the defense, Salah believed in the play, stayed with the ball on the left, entered the area, scribbled in front of the marking and finished to secure the rout.🚦 How it stands After the exciting home win, Liverpool returns to the field on August 25 (Monday), when they visit Newcastle, for the second round of the Premier League 2025/26. Kingsley Coman joins Cristiano Ronaldo and João Félix at Al-Nassr in transfer from Bayern

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Kingsley Coman is leaving Bayern Munich after a trophy-filled decade to join up with Cristiano Ronaldo at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. Bayern announced the transfer late Friday. Kicker magazine reported a fee of up to 35 million euros ($41 million) for the French winger. Coman, who scored Bayern's winning goal against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2020 Champions League final, will be part of a star-studded forward lineup with Ronaldo, fellow new signing João Félix and Coman's former Bayern teammate Sadio Mané. Al-Nassr is looking to improve after finishing third in the Saudi Pro League last season and signed Ronaldo to a two-year contract extension in June. Former Barcelona defender Iñigo Martínez joined on a free transfer last week. Coman's departure from Bayern comes two weeks after the German champion signed Luis Díaz from Liverpool, intensifying Coman's competition for places. He got a fond farewell from Bayern coach Vincent Kompany after they won the Bundesliga together last season. 'When a player as successful as him leaves the club, it's always a bit emotional,' Kompany said earlier Friday. 'You have to have understanding for his position in this situation and what he'd like. For me, what's important now is that we look forward and that we show a lot of respect for Kingsley Coman, for what he's done for this club.' Coman won the German title nine times at Bayern since his initial arrival on loan from Juventus in 2015. Despite that success, the 29-year-old winger struggled for playing time last season and was often used as a bench player by Kompany, even before Díaz's arrival. Coman had nine goals in 45 games in all competitions last season and is the second experienced Bayern forward to leave after Leroy Sané departed for Turkey's Galatasaray on a free transfer, also after lacking game time. 'He earned an eternal place in the club's history with his goal in the 2020 Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain," Bayern board member for sport, Max Eberl, said. ___

Former Spartans star signs with Polish basketball club

A pair of former Spartans are linking up in Poland. Former Spartans big man Kenny Goins has reportedly signed with the Polish club Trefl Sopot. According to 247Sports' reporter Stephen Brooks, Goins will be joining the same club as former Spartans big man Szymon Zapala. Goins played for the Spartans from 2015 to 2019, where he played a big part in the Spartans winning a pair of Big Ten titles and reaching the Final Four in 2019. It was his shot against Duke in the Elite Eight that propelled the Spartans to the Final Four that season. Since leaving Michigan State, Goins has primarily played in Europe. According to Basketball Reference, Goins has played a pair of seasons in the Greek Basketball League and one year in the France LNB Pro A. He will now be heading to Poland and play alongside a fellow former Spartan.
