'Sitaare Zameen Par': Aamir Khan defends theatres over OTT releases; says, 'I believe in my audience'

Time of India4 days ago

Bollywood actor and filmmaker
Aamir Khan
is standing firm on his belief in the power of cinema halls. His upcoming film 'Sitaare Zameen Par' will be released in theatres in a few days, with no plans to drop it on any OTT platform anytime soon.
In a chat with News18 Showsha, the actor opened up about why the film is strictly for cinemas and how he feels the OTT trend is hurting the theatre business.
'I don't know any business where you offer your product, and if someone doesn't buy it, you tell them—don't worry, I'll drop it at your house for free in eight weeks,' he said, speaking about how quickly films are being made available online. 'It doesn't make sense to me.
That's the reason many films aren't doing well in theatres.'
Theatres vs OTT: Aamir takes a strong stand
Aamir believes that good films should be watched on the big screen and not on a phone or laptop at home. He said the trend of quick OTT releases is damaging theatre culture. According to him, this has created a 'famine and feast' situation — either a film becomes a big hit or it fails completely.
'I believe in theatres. I believe in my audience.

If you make a good film, people will come to watch it on the big screen.' For Aamir, the experience of watching a film in a cinema hall is special, and he wants to keep that feeling alive with 'Sitaare Zameen Par'.
OTT can't fix a bad film, says Aamir
When asked about his last film 'Laal Singh Chaddha', which received better reviews on OTT after a slow run in theatres, Aamir didn't agree with the idea that streaming can change people's minds, 'If someone doesn't enjoy a film in theatres, they won't suddenly like it at home.
Your opinion of the film doesn't change just because of where you watch it.'
He also mentioned that high ticket prices and expensive food in multiplexes can push audiences to wait for films to come online. Still, he's not letting that affect his creative decisions.
What is 'Sitaare Zameen Par' all about?
'Sitaare Zameen Par' is a sports comedy drama directed by R. S. Prasanna. It is produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. The film stars Aamir Khan and
Genelia Deshmukh
and is described as a spiritual follow-up to Aamir's 2007 film 'Taare Zameen Par'.
The film also marks the Hindi film debut of Aroush Datta,
Gopi Krishna
Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra and Simran Mangeshkar — fresh faces Aamir is excited to introduce to the audience.

Saiyami Kher Reveals Hardcore Ironman 70.3 Prep: 'Nothing Comes Easy'

Last Updated: Saiyami Kher is training for her second Ironman 70.3 with daily 10km runs, 40km cycling, and 1.5km swims — all while juggling a film career. Saiyami Kher is not just conquering roles on screen—she's also pushing her physical boundaries in the real world. The actress and athlete is currently in the thick of training for her second Ironman 70.3 triathlon, and her regimen reflects a grit and determination that rivals professional athletes. A known fitness enthusiast, Saiyami has always straddled the line between cinema and sport. But her current training schedule for the triathlon is next-level. She recently offered fans a peek into her daily routine—an impressive 10-kilometre treadmill run clocked in at just over 70 minutes, followed by a 40-kilometre cycling session around Mumbai averaging 25.6 km/h, and a pool swim of 1.5 kilometres completed in under 38 minutes. Each workout is a testament to her discipline, and yet, Saiyami remains modest about her progress. 'Olympic size distance felt great but feeling far from ready for the 70.3," she shared, acknowledging the steep climb that still lies ahead—both literally and figuratively. The triathlon's route was changed after she registered, transforming it into a more difficult, hilly terrain. But Saiyami isn't backing down. If anything, it has only fuelled her to train harder. 'Being an actor comes with its own physical and emotional demands," she said. 'Training for something like the Ironman 70.3 while shooting or traveling is extremely challenging. But I've never liked doing things halfway. This race is a test of not just the body but the mind too. I know I have a long way to go… This race is way tougher than what I did last year. Which is why I need to put in even more effort. Juggling work and training gets tough. But nothing comes easy :)" Saiyami Kher made her acting debut with the Telugu film Rey in 2015 and her Hindi debut with Mirzya in 2016). She has since appeared in Mauli (2018), Choked (2020), Wild Dog (2021) and Ghoomer (2023). She has also starred in the streaming series Special OPS (2020) and Faadu (2022). Was Aamir Khan fired from Shah Rukh Khan starrer Darr? Sitaare Zameen Par star spills truth

Darr was one such film that may have changed the trajectory of Shah Rukh Khan 's career in the film industry. He portrayed the negative shade brilliantly in Yash Chopra's film, also starring Juhi Chawla and Sunny Deol. King Khan's portrayal of an obsessed lover won him accolades. But can you imagine Aamir Khan in this role? Although he did not reveal for which role he was part of the film, he was in the movie until Yash Chopra decided to fire him. Talking to Zoom, Aamir Khan made a big revelation. While discussing the hit films he refused to do, the topic of Darr came up. He was asked about rejecting Darr. To this, Khan corrected the interviewer and revealed that he had been kicked out of Darr. Yes! You heard that right. Aamir admitted that he never said 'no' to the film. The reason for his being fired was that he demanded a joint reading session with the other actor. The Sarfarosh star wanted a joint narration from Yash Chopra, as it was a two-hero film, and it was a principle he followed. However, the ace director did not want it, so he fired Khan from the film. He further added that everyone has their way of working, and if there is more than one actor involved in a project, then they should listen to the narration together. However, this did not happen in Darr, and as a result, he was not included in it. 'Darr ko main na nahi bola tha, Darr ko maine haa bola tha. Mujhe Darr se nikala gaya tha,' said the actor. We wonder if the iconic cult movie would have been the same if Aamir had been a part of it. And if he was considered for Sunny Deol's role, then we might have seen the two Khans sharing the screen space. But some things are not meant to happen. Well, on the work front, Aamir Khan is geared up for the release of his upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par, which also stars Genelia Deshmukh. The film will hit the screens on June 20 and is said to be a spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par.
