IIT-Madras is now among top 200 varsities in QS global rankings, Anna University slips
The Indian Institute of Technology - Madras (IIT-Madras) has made it to the top 200 varsities in the QS World University Rankings 2026 by climbing up 47 spots from its previous year's ranking of 227.
While IIT Madras is ranked 180th, Anna University that is ranked 10th among Indian universities, slipped from 383rd to 465th position in global ranking.
According to the latest ranking list released by London-based global higher education analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds, the institutions were evaluated based on multiple parameters like academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, international student diversity, graduate employability and IIT-Madras showed marked improvement in many parameters including International Research Network.
Speaking to The Hindu soon after the list was released, V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT-Madras, said that added focus on the institute's international collaborations had paid dividends. The School of Interdisciplinary Studies, which began in 2018 with a seed fund of ₹1,000 crore and an additional ₹333 crore raised by the institute, resulted in a gradual improvement in its international research network. 'IRN is all about how much you start publishing with other people, how much you start collaborating on joint publications,' Prof. Kamakoti remarked.
In a few parameters such as sustainability, the institute's ranking took a hit. Prof. Kamakoti said that while IIT-Madras did show a marginal improvement in the parameter from 44.6 points to 73 points, the corresponding improvement by other institutions was higher. This, he said, was because of the lower publication count of IIT-Madras in Humanities, Environment and Earth Sciences compared to other institutions. 'The others have improved by leaps and bounds,' he added.
Sharing his plans for the coming year, he said that the short period goal would be to focus on international research network while a collaboration between Humanities and Management would provide more value for the institution. The Zanzibar campus of IIT-Madras had helped in internationalisation of the institute while MoUs with 16 Kenyan Universities and a Tanzanian University will help increase its footprint in the African countries, Prof. Kamakoti noted.
Two parameters that carry around 45% of the ranking weightage — employer reputation and academic reputation — have dragged down the rankings of most Indian institutions, he observed. 'It is just a survey and it all depends on how many people mark you in the survey. To whom this survey is going and how it is going is something that we have to work on,' he maintained.

Sensex, Nifty end lower; Mid & Small-caps crash: Should you buy the dip?
Indian stock markets ended on a cautious note on Thursday, June 19, as frontline indices Sensex and Nifty 50 slipped slightly, while mid- and small-cap stocks took a severe beating. The BSE Midcap index tanked 1.64% and the Smallcap index plunged 1.77%, wiping out nearly ₹4 lakh crore in investor wealth in just one session. The Sensex declined by 83 points or 0.10%, to close at 81,361.87, while the Nifty 50 ended 19 points or 0.08% lower at 24,793.25. The sharp correction in the broader market was triggered by escalating geopolitical tensions between Israel and Iran, with US President Donald Trump warning that it might be too late for Iran to negotiate and teasing a major announcement next week. These developments kept investor sentiment fragile. In parallel, the US Federal Reserve kept its policy rate unchanged at 4.25%–4.50%, while painting a worrying picture of persistent inflation and slower growth — raising global stagflation concerns. This particularly impacted Indian software and export-oriented stocks. 'Markets stayed rangebound with a negative tilt as global fears over US involvement in the Middle East weighed heavily. The Fed's signals of sticky inflation also dampened risk appetite,' said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services. Top Gainers on Nifty 50: Tata Consumer: +2.14% Eicher Motors: +1.71% Mahindra & Mahindra: +1.58% Top Losers on Nifty 50: Adani Ports: -2.52% Bajaj Finance: -2.29% Shriram Finance: -2.08% In total, 33 stocks on the Nifty 50 closed in the red. Sectoral Snapshot: Only Nifty Auto ended higher, up 0.52%. All other indices closed in the red: Nifty PSU Bank: -2.04% Nifty Media: -1.91% Nifty Realty: -1.60% Nifty Metal: -1.29% Nifty Bank: -0.45% Financial Services: -0.38% Private Bank Index: -0.30% Investor Wealth Erosion: The total market capitalization of BSE-listed companies fell from ₹446.3 lakh crore to ₹442.5 lakh crore — a single-day erosion of ₹4 lakh crore.

TikTok ban delayed again as Donald Trump seeks US ownership deal
US President Donald Trump has once again signed an executive order granting TikTok a 90-day reprieve from a national ban, giving his administration more time to secure a deal that would place the Chinese-owned social media platform under American ownership. This marks the third such extension by the President since taking office. Trump's latest executive order, signed Thursday, follows two previous efforts to postpone the ban. The first came on January 20, his first day back in office, when TikTok briefly went dark after a national ban—enacted by Congress and upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court—took effect. A second extension was issued in April, when White House officials were reportedly close to finalizing a deal to spin off TikTok into a U.S.-owned company. That effort collapsed when Chinese regulators pulled out following Trump's announcement of new tariffs. Now, with another 90-day window open, the platform's fate remains in limbo. TikTok, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, remains operational for its 170 million US users—thanks in part to assurances from the Trump Justice Department that tech firms like Apple, Google, and Oracle will not face enforcement actions for continuing to support the app. Despite national security concerns, Trump has expressed affection for TikTok, even crediting the platform with helping him connect with younger voters. Since joining the platform last year, Trump has gained over 15 million followers. In January, he described having a 'warm spot' for the app. Public support for banning TikTok has waned. A Pew Research Center survey found that only one-third of Americans now back a ban, compared to 50% in March 2023. Another third oppose a ban, while the rest remain undecided. Among those in favor of a ban, 8 in 10 cited concerns over data privacy and potential Chinese government access to user information. Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.), vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, criticized Trump's approach. 'An executive order can't sidestep the law, but that's exactly what the president is trying to do,' Warner said, accusing the administration of ignoring its own national security findings. As Trump continues to seek a deal that satisfies both US national security interests and his political priorities, TikTok remains active and widely used across the country.
