Vidyadhan Scholarship open for T.N., Puducherry students
: The Mathematics Department of the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) has been recognised for its work by the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS). It received the silver-level recognition under the CAS University Recognition Programme. The department offers undergraduate, master's and doctoral programmes in mathematics, statistics, and financial modelling, and prepares students for careers in property and casualty insurance risk management. Neelesh S. Upadhye, professor in the department, said the recognition celebrated the department's robust stochastic processes, regression, financial mathematics and data analytics, which were at the heart of modern actuarial science. Mr. Upadhye said, 'We look forward to deepening our collaboration through faculty development workshops, student summer programme placements and joint research initiatives.' The award will offer benefits such as priority placement for students in CAS summer programmes; access to the society's teaching materials and case study libraries; invitation to annual general insurance teachers' conference; sponsored on-campus events and virtual presentations with the society's professionals. The recognition is valid through the 2023-2026 cycle. CAS has over 10,000 members working in more than 40 countries, and is the global leader in credentialing and education of general insurance actuaries.

IIT-Madras offers free AI courses through Swayam Plus
Swayam Plus, an initiative from Indian Institute of Technology - Madras has launched free AI courses for students and working professionals. The courses are open to disciplines beyond engineering, including arts, science, commerce. The last date to apply for these courses is May 12. The duration of a course can be from 25 to 45 hours. R. Sarathy, Dean of Swayam Plus coordinator said the courses were aligned to National Credit Framework and could be taken as a credit programme by higher educational institutions in the upcoming academic calendar. The courses aim at making AI accessible to students from disciplines such as arts, science, commerce. The course for physics has materialised the fundamental concepts with AI tools to explore machine learning and neural networks in solving real-world physics problems, included with hands-on labs and interactive applications. Chemistry courses will introduce students to apply AI tools, from predicting molecular structures to modelling chemical reactions by using real-world datasets, Python and SQL. Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has launched five courses in artificial intelligence through its SWAYAM Plus programme, which seeks to promote employability-focused skilling courses. "The key focus of these courses is to make AI available for everyone as no prior AI knowledge is required to apply for these courses," the institute said in a news release. The five courses are: AI in Physics which will look at the use of AI tools such as machine learning and neural networks in solving real-world physics problems; AI in Chemistry; AI in Accounting; Cricket Analytics with AI and AI/ML using Python. 'These courses, which are aligned to the National Credit Framework (NCrF), can be taken by higher education institutions as a credit programme for the upcoming academic calendar as well,' said R Sarathi, dean (planning) and SWAYAM Plus coordinator at IIT-Madras. The courses are open to undergraduate and postgraduate students from all academic backgrounds (engineering, science, commerce, arts, interdisciplinary), according to the news release.
