CAS recognises IIT-M's Mathematics Department
The department offers undergraduate, master's and doctoral programmes in mathematics, statistics, and financial modelling, and prepares students for careers in property and casualty insurance risk management.
Neelesh S. Upadhye, professor in the department, said the recognition celebrated the department's robust stochastic processes, regression, financial mathematics and data analytics, which were at the heart of modern actuarial science.
Mr. Upadhye said, 'We look forward to deepening our collaboration through faculty development workshops, student summer programme placements and joint research initiatives.'
The award will offer benefits such as priority placement for students in CAS summer programmes; access to the society's teaching materials and case study libraries; invitation to annual general insurance teachers' conference; sponsored on-campus events and virtual presentations with the society's professionals.
The recognition is valid through the 2023-2026 cycle. CAS has over 10,000 members working in more than 40 countries, and is the global leader in credentialing and education of general insurance actuaries.

RU proposes teaching roles for research scholars amid faculty shortage
1 2 Jaipur: In a strategic move to address faculty shortages and enhance the academic experience, the University of Rajasthan 's academic council has recommended that research scholars be allowed to teach regular classes alongside their doctoral studies. However, the decision on whether they will teach postgraduate (PG) or undergraduate (UG) classes, or both, remains pending. This proposal, discussed in a council meeting on Wednesday, suggests that enrolled research students could be assigned six to ten teaching periods per week. "With this, the researchers will not only be able to gain teaching experience in the university but the teaching work of vacant classes affected due to shortage of teachers in the university will also be smoothened," stated an official release from the university. This initiative comes as the university grapples with over 60% of its teaching posts currently vacant. In addition to this proposal, the council recommended adopting new PhD admission rules issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Officials noted that this would facilitate appointments to vacant posts and expedite the pending promotion of 400 teachers within the university. Aligning with the National Education Policy, 2020, the academic council proposed replacing all annual courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels with a semester system. Additionally, the council recommended incorporating SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) courses as electives in postgraduate programs. These courses are approved by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Last year, the university signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Rajasthan Centre for Advance Technology (R-CAT) and TCS, offering 107 Industry Ready online courses at subsidised rates. The academic council has now recommended that students receive credits for these courses if they opt to study them, further enhancing their educational opportunities. IIT-Kanpur admits 5 students without JEE Advanced; cites Olympiad excellence
LUCKNOW: Bypassing the traditional JEE Advanced route, IIT-Kanpur has admitted five students to its Bachelor of Science (BS) and Bachelor of Technology (BTech) programmes based solely on their performance in international science Olympiads and training camps. IIT-Madras has also launched distinct admission pathways, including Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) and Science Olympiad Excellence Admissions (SCOPE). Recently, IIT-Gandhinagar also announced admissions through the Olympiad route, with specific criteria and guidelines published on its site. IIT-Bombay has also announced to admit students into its BS Mathematics programme through the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) pathway. Talking to TOI, IIT-K director Prof Manindra Agrawal said: "We are happy to note that five students have been admitted through the Olympiad programme at IIT-Kanpur. Last Nov, IIT-Kanpur pioneered an alternative admission route, allowing students to join its programmes based on exceptional performance in prestigious international Science Olympiads. The eligible competitions include International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), International Physics Olympiad (IPO), International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), International Biology Olympiad (IBO) and International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). This innovative approach recognizes and rewards global talent in specific subjects. Under this programme, IIT-K offers reserved seats in five departments: Biological Sciences & Bioengineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Chemistry, Economic Sciences, and Mathematics & Statistics. Admission through this route will allow a limited number of seats per department specifically for students who have undergone rigorous preparation and training in relevant Olympiad camps. The five selected candidates hail from diverse regions, with two students each from West Bengal and one each from Delhi, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. Notably, two candidates were selected from the International Olympiad in Informatics Training Camp (IOITC), while the remaining three were chosen from the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC). Eligibility for this pathway requires candidates to be of the same age as JEE (Advanced) candidates and to have taken their class 12 (or equivalent) exams for the first time in either the year of admission or the year prior, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. Candidates must have attended the relevant Olympiad training camp in the subject for which they are applying. Those who were previously admitted to IITs via JoSAA or had an IIT admission cancelled are not eligible. The selection process involves two stages. Initially, each department will review applicants based on their Olympiad rankings and shortlist candidates accordingly. These candidates will then participate in a written examination, which is mandatory, and an interview, if required.
