IIT-Kanpur admits 5 students without JEE Advanced; cites Olympiad excellence
IIT-Madras has also launched distinct admission pathways, including Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) and Science Olympiad Excellence Admissions (SCOPE). Recently, IIT-Gandhinagar also announced admissions through the Olympiad route, with specific criteria and guidelines published on its site.
IIT-Bombay has also announced to admit students into its BS Mathematics programme through the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) pathway.
Talking to TOI, IIT-K director Prof Manindra Agrawal said: "We are happy to note that five students have been admitted through the Olympiad programme at IIT-Kanpur. We initiated this channel to admit bright students who may not be able to do well in JEE Advanced due to their preoccupation with Olympiad training."
"We hope that this will motivate our bright students to train seriously for the Olympiad and bring laurels to the country," Prof Agrawal said.

Chennai engineering student is 89th from India to reach the mark
Chennai engineering student is 89th from India to reach the mark CHENNAI: A new grandmaster from Tamil Nadu has almost become a trend, but there's something striking about S Rohith Krishna. The 20-year-old Chennai boy secured all three norms — the first in March, the second in May, and the final at the Almaty Masters Qonaev Cup in Kazakhstan on Tuesday — in a space of six months. Rohith is now India's 89th Grandmaster and the 33rd from Tamil Nadu. His tryst with chess began at the age of eight, when his veterinarian mother offered him a choice between chess and drawing. He picked chess, and there has been no looking back. In his early years, Rohith defeated some of the top talents, including world champion D Gukesh. While his chess friends zoomed ahead, Rohith, who became an IM in 2022, slowed his rating climb to focus on academics. He is currently in the third year of an engineering degree at SSN College of Engineering. Talking to TOI, Rohith's coach K Visweswaran said: 'Rohith defeated the likes of Gukesh and other top players when he was a kid, but he couldn't rise further because he wanted to focus on his studies and balance both. He studied in a CBSE school and always scored 90-plus. He wants to be an allrounder; a good engineer and a good chess player. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 11 Foods That Help In Healing Knee Pain Naturally Undo 'It may seem like he achieved his norms quickly, many years of effort went into it. There were many moments of internal panic. He always had the ability to make a he not focused so much on academics, this could have happened last year. He has been a Grandmaster in the making for years.' After a string of strong performances, Rohith's immediate goal is to cross the 2600 barrier in FIDE rating. 'Instead of chasing the final norm, I decided to focus on preparation and improving my game. I was sure I would become a Grandmaster; it was just a matter of time, so I wanted to strengthen my overall play. In Almaty Masters, I needed a win in the final round and I went in with an open mind, knowing anything could happen. I feel relieved and happy after achieving this milestone,' Rohith told TOI from Abu Dhabi. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Stampede fallout: Bengaluru stadium declared unsafe; Women's ODI World Cup matches likely to shift to Thiruvananthapuram
KOCHI: Two months after the Bengaluru stadium stampede tragedy left 11 fans dead, Bengaluru will miss out on hosting some matches of the Women's World Cup scheduled from Sept 30 to Nov 2. Thiruvananthapuram's Karyavattom stadium is likely to host these matches. This is the second major blow to Bengaluru after KSCA Maharaja T20 Trophy was shifted to Mysuru's Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wadeyar ground. Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) president K Jayesh told TOI that discussions with the International Cricket Council (ICC) were going on about hosting Women's World Cup matches and a final confirmation was awaited. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was awarded four matches - including the final, contingent upon Pakistan not qualifying - when the ICC announced the official tournament itinerary. Following the June 4 stampede, Karnataka govt reportedly withdrew permission to host any matches at the tragedy-struck venue. Logistical challenges need to be addressed: Jayesh The decision followed findings of a government-commissioned probe led by Justice John Michael D'Cunha. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo The commission said the stadium is "fundamentally unsafe" for large-scale events, citing design flaws, poor crowd management infrastructure, limited entry and exit points, inadequate public transport access, and insufficient parking. In light of these developments, ICC chairman Jay Shah met KCA's Jayesh in Mumbai early this week. "We assured him (Shah) that Thiruvananthapuram is ready to host the Women's T20 World Cup matches. We have the necessary infrastructure in place," Jayesh said. "It's not yet confirmed how many matches we will host. Several logistical challenges still need to be addressed," he added. The stadium last hosted an international match during the India vs Sri Lanka ODI in 2023. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Chennai Grand Masters 2025: Arjun Erigaisi battles back to hold Vincent Keymer in tense draw
Arjun Erigaisi (AP/PTI) Chennai: Ahead of the Chennai Grand Masters, Vincent Keymer told TOI his immediate goal was to get himself in good shape in classical chess to qualify for the Candidates Tournament and promised to give his all. After six rounds here, the young German GM is still unvanquished and well on course towards his target. On Tuesday, the headline clash between the table topper Keymer and top seed Arjun Erigaisi concluded in a gripping stalemate, leaving Keymer (4.5 points) clinging to a one-point lead with three rounds to spare. Playing with the black pieces, Arjun chose the 'Slav defence' against Keymer's 'queen's pawn' opening. Keymer appeared well-prepared and established a promising advantage. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! As the game unfolded, much of Keymer's advantage gradually slipped away with Arjun deliberately complicating the positions. Known for thriving under pressure, Arjun defended with remarkable precision and even maintained composure in a scenario where a single misstep could have ended the game within ten moves. Despite Keymer holding early momentum, time trouble and minor inaccuracies allowed Arjun to claw back. Opting for a practical approach, Arjun played on Keymer's clock rather than hunting for perfect moves and ran away with the half-point. Poll Which style of play do you prefer in chess? Aggressive and offensive Defensive and strategic Balanced approach It depends on the situation With the lead still tight, Keymer will next face Awonder Liang (3.5), who has surged into joint-second spot alongside Arjun (3.5). At the same time, Awonder crossed the coveted 2700 rating mark after a commanding win over V Pranav with the black pieces. While the spotlight was on the Arjun-Keymer clash, on the adjacent board, close friends Anish Giri and Vidit Gujrathi waged a fierce battle before ultimately settling for a draw in their 109-move marathon. The Indian pushed hard with some aggressive play and came agonisingly close to victory after an error by Anish but fell short. The game ended peacefully when both players agreed to a rook trade that secured the draw. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
