Beachburg Fair returns to the Ottawa Valley for 169th year

CTV News13-07-2025
Families enjoyed toonie rides, food trucks and a demolition derby as the Beachburg Fair returned on a hotter than usual summer weekend.
Organized by the Beachburg Agricultural Society, the event brings together the entire Ottawa Valley for a weekend of family-friendly fun. The fair is a yearly tradition rooted in history dating back to 1857.
As it wrapped up it's 169th weekend on Sunday, organizers say they welcomed over 5,000 people.
It's become a yearly tradition for families looking to spend the day playing carnival games, hitting different rides and seeing livestock up close.
Rachel Eden is the fair's secretary and says they have added some new attractions over the years. The goal of the fair is to encourage awareness of agriculture, especially for those living in rural communities.
'We've had different events each day. This year, we added a modified truck and tractor pull on Thursday, and it really increased our numbers through our gates,' Eden says.
'On Friday, we had our horse pull and last night, we had our demolition derby, which is a crowd favorite.'
Eden says the fair is run by mostly volunteers and adds it's something people love about attending the fair each year.
'We have over like 170 volunteers who make this fair possible, it would not happen without that manpower,' Eden said.
'That's what people love that it's genuine and full of heart and it feels like home when you come here.'
Eden says once they wrap up this weekend, organizers will begin to brainstorm plans for next year's 170th anniversary, which she says will be a major milestone.

After winning the Polaris Music Prize, Debby Friday bet on herself

When Debby Friday first joined Q 's Tom Power for an interview in 2023, her debut album, Good Luck, didn't just shake up the music scene, it shot her straight into the spotlight. That album ended up winning the Polaris Music Prize, which brought Friday a lot more attention and tons of new fans. But when she sat down to write her latest record, The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life, she made a conscious decision to do things differently. Instead of leaning into the experimental sound she had become known for, she wanted to make a more pop-influenced record. "I have made experimental work pretty much the majority of my career," she says. "That's like my bread and butter. But what I wanted to do was figure out a way to kind of, I would say, bridge the gap between experimental and then also accessible…. I was like, 'What would a Debby Friday pop song sound like?'" WATCH | Debby Friday's full interview with Tom Power: Besides making her music sound catchy, Friday found that the biggest challenge of writing a pop song was that it required her to tap into her vulnerable side. "I think a lot of people, when they meet me through my music, they see the hard side, the rougher side, the side that's more like this powerful — can I say bitch? — this powerful bitch," she tells Power. "But that side, I think, came up more as a self-defense mechanism that I developed earlier on in my life." After winning the Polaris Music Prize, Friday made the decision to be self-managed so she could have complete control over her creative vision. She wrote the song Bet On Me about taking that leap. "Something that is really important to me is just being true to myself and being true to my vision," she says. " I have a very strong vision. I know exactly what I want to get out of this career. And a big part of that is this honesty — honesty and clarity in self-expression, and that's not always going to look like what other people's ideas are." WATCH | Official video for Bet On Me:

Emerging acts and local talent shine in Osheaga's stacked weekend lineup

Osheaga is upon us, and while the big-name headliners are sure to draw the crowds, there are plenty of hidden gems worth discovering. Darcy MacDonald, a freelance writer who's been covering Montreal's music scene for 15 years, shared some of his must-see performances — a mix of local acts and rising stars that might just become your new favourites. Friday Joey Valence & Brae, a young hip-hop duo from Pennsylvania, take the Valley Stage at 3:55 p.m. Macdonald says to expect a high-energy set — the perfect way to kick off the weekend. Magi Merlin, a Montreal-based artist, hits the SiriusXM stage at 5:30 p.m. The Saint-Lazare native is known for her blend of alternative R&B and neo-soul. Bibi Club, a Canadian indie-pop duo, will be belting out tunes on the SiriusXM stage at 6:15 p.m. PyPy, a Montreal psych-punk band, takes over the SiriusXM stage at 7:30 p.m. 'Each act brings something profoundly different from the other, but they're all super entertaining,' said MacDonald. Saturday BéLi, the stage name of Montreal-based singer-songwriter Ariane Béliveau, will make her Osheaga debut at 4 p.m. on the SiriusXM stage. TV on the Radio, an Indie rock band from Brooklyn, will perform on the Valley stage at 7 p.m. 'TV on the Radio from Brooklyn in the early aughts. Absolutely adore them, and I've never seen them, which is kind of crazy. So, I'm really looking forward to that,' MacDonald added. Sunday Debby Friday, an electronic musician who grew up in Montreal and is now based in Toronto, will hit the Valley Stage at 2 p.m. She won the Polaris Music Prize in 2023. Turbine, a trio originally from France and now based in Montreal, will deliver a sample-based electronic performance on the Island Stage, also at 2 p.m. 'Both of these talents are high-level,' MacDonald noted.
