GRAAFF REINET: Livestock farmer Joe Kroon turned to saffron in desperation when drought threatened his livelihood and, as this season's harvest winds down, he is encouraged by the potential of a new entry into South Africa's farming catalogue.
"Every year that we've planted, it's got better and better," said Kroon, who started growing the world's most expensive spice, mostly associated with Iran and Afghanistan, around five years ago with corms imported from The Netherlands.
With around one hectare (2.5 acres) under cultivation at his farm near the town of Graaf Reinet in the dry Karoo region, Kroon is among the few South African farmers pioneering cultivation of the delicate purple crocus and its precious red threads.
"Animals were dying and there's no help from the government so I had to find other means of making an income. I started researching and one of the things that came up was saffron," he told AFP.
"It sort of exponentially grows each year," he said. "At the end of this year, we're going to lift the crop and replant a bigger area."
His partner, Ross Blakeway, expects this season's yield could reach about six kilogrammes (13 pounds), around double the amount of last year.

Blakeway said output of their Karoo Saffron partnership is only for the domestic market, including local chefs and as an ingredient in a sauce and a Pure Karoo health range, although there had been some interest from Europe.
And while there is promise for South African saffron, it is not a "get rich quick", he said.
The corms are expensive and, "it's popular amongst the porcupines and rabbits, so you really have to protect your land," he said.
Saffricon, which says it is the largest commercial producer in South Africa with seven hectares, also began cultivation around five years ago.
In the process of finding the correct conditions, Saffricon moved several times before settling in the Piketberg area in the Western Cape, said the company's production coordinator, Tiaan Engelbrecht.
The company -- which also shares advice and trial packs to potential cultivators, from domestic gardeners to commercial farmers -- wants to build volume for local saffron to become a worthwhile export.
"It's been met with a lot of hope for being able to diversify the crops that are available in the country, especially for people who have smaller plots," Engelbrecht said, although there had been some scepticism too.
"It's just been absolutely wonderful to see people still being excited about growing the agriculture industry and being excited about new things," he said.

‘Trumped' Ludhiana industry holds meeting on tariff blows.

Ludhiana: The Chamber of Industrial & Commercial Undertakings (CICU) has sounded alarm over steep new tariffs to be imposed by the United States on a wide range of Indian exports from August 28, warning that the move could severely hit India's trade competitiveness and lead to job losses. The issue was discussed at an industrial meeting in Ludhiana, where members urged the government to take steps to negotiate with the US and resolve the dispute on top priority, stressing that once overseas customers are lost, it is very difficult to win them back. CICU's analysis showed that the US will impose new tariffs of up to 50% on several Indian export categories, pushing total payable tariffs to unprecedented levels. Knitted apparel, which currently faces a Most Favoured Nation (MFN) tariff of 13.9%, will now be subject to a total tariff of 63.9%. Woven apparel have 60.3% tariff. Textiles 59%, organic chemicals 54%, diamonds and gold products 52.1%, furniture and mattresses 52.3%, steel, aluminium and copper 51.7%, and machinery 51.3%. Shrimps, carpets, and several other products also fall in the "very high impact" category, while sectors such as petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, and smartphones will see low or no tariff changes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo CICU members stressed that the government must extend stronger support to the manufacturing sector by reducing logistics costs, offering export incentives of at least 15%, and expanding the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme beyond large-scale industries to include MSMEs. They called for a dedicated "Mini PLI Scheme" to help small-scale industries adopt advanced technologies and develop import-substitution capabilities. Sectors proposed for PLI extension include steel, engineering products, textiles, garments, machinery, hand tools, auto components, and furniture. The industry also recommended that exporters be given incentives under a cooperative model to encourage collaboration, pooling of resources, and scaling up production for global markets. The meeting also highlighted the need for all stakeholders, including raw material suppliers and tier-1 vendors, to make reasonable sacrifices to ensure Indian products remain globally competitive. The members warned that if the tariff issue was not addressed promptly, it could lead to production slowdowns and unemployment, especially in MSME-heavy industrial hubs such as Punjab's textile, engineering, and bicycle manufacturing sectors. The meeting concluded with a unanimous appeal to the government to take swift and decisive action to protect India's export momentum, resolve the tariff dispute with the US, and ensure the country's manufacturing and export base remains strong in the face of rising trade barriers. Man loses over Rs 10 lakh in investment scam

Udupi: A man from Kirimanjeshwara alleged that he was duped of over Rs 10 lakh in an online investment scam after being lured through a Facebook link into a WhatsApp group promising lucrative stock market tips. The complainant, Altaf Hussain, 42, stated that on July 5, he clicked on a link received on his Facebook account, which led him to join a WhatsApp group named 'Next Billion Technology'. NMC to raise 400 crore via municipal & green bonds

Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has now changed its fundraising strategy. Instead of taking out loans from public sector banks, the civic body now plans to raise Rs400 crore through municipal and green bonds. The NMC has submitted a proposal to state govt's urban development department for approval to issue these bonds. As per the plan, municipal bonds will be issued in the first phase, followed by green bonds in the second phase — both within the current financial year. Municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri, while talking to TOI, confirmed that the earlier plan to secure loans from public sector banks has been cancelled. "We have instead opted to raise funds through municipal and green bonds. We will be raising Rs 200 crore each from municipal and green bonds. The corporation will receive incentives of over Rs 50 crore from the Centre if it raises funds through municipal and green bonds," Khatri said. "The entire Rs 400 crore will be raised in the current financial year. Initially, we will raise funds through municipal bonds and later through green bonds," she added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo The NMC has submitted a Rs15,000 crore plan to state govt for the upcoming Kumbh Mela. Other works are expected to be approved in the second and third phases, as per priorities and duration required for the completion of these works. During the last Kumbh Mela in 2015, state govt had approved Rs1,050 crore Kumbh Mela plan of the NMC. The NMC has also deployed credit agencies to assess the credit ratings of the municipal corporation as it is mandatory for raising the funds through bonds.
