Purdue Boilermakers snuck an awesome Drew Brees Easter egg into sports logo redesign
Purdue's hardhat-wearing mascot, aptly named Purdue Pete, hasn't changed much through the years. But back in April the school introduced a new set of logos for the Boilermakers' golf, basketball, and football teams, each featuring Purdue Pete competing in those sports. And they picked a great pose for the windup to throw a football, perfectly emulating Brees' own signature throwing motion.
Every quarterback has their own technique. Some lift the ball high above their head, others prefer more of a sidearm, or a counterbalance with their off-hand. Brees has talked about changing his throwing motion after turning pro, widening his feet to produce a quicker release. With his left hand splayed and lining up with his forward planted leg, Brees drove off his back foot to push the ball downfield. It's a technique that won him the all-time NFL passing yards record, among dozens of others, before he called it a career. Now he's up for enshrinement at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
And it's a really nice gesture from Purdue's athletics department. Brees led the Boilermakers to hard-fought wins over Michigan, Northwestern, and Ohio State in 2000, which earned Purdue's first Rose Bowl invitation since 1967. Brees left college with Big Ten conference records in everything from passing yards to touchdown passes, and he was inducted to the school's Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame back in 2009. Not bad for someone a lot of people said was too short to play QB.

Updated bowl projections for Penn State
Multiple bowl projections sending Penn State to Pasadena The start of a new college football season is nearly here, and the hopes and expectations are overflowing throughout Happy Valley. Penn State is gearing up for one of the most anticipated seasons of the James Franklin era and is already ranked highly to start the season. After a run to the College Football Playoff semifinal last season, Penn State is expected to make another deep playoff run, according to a number of preseason bowl projections. Here is a quick look at some of the most recently updated bowl projections for Penn State for the upcoming 2025 college football season. Brad Crawford, CBS Sports: Rose Bowl, No. 2 seed vs. 7/10 winner Brad Crawford of CBS Sports has the Nittany Lions coming into the postseason with a first-round bye, suggesting Penn State will be the Big Ten champion. That would send Penn State to the Rose Bowl to face the winner of a first-round matchup between the no. 7 and no. 10 seeds, which would be Georgia and Orgeon, respectively, in Crawford's preseason projection. Kyle Bonagura, ESPN: Rose Bowl, No. 2 seed vs. No. 7 Alabama; Mark Schlabach, ESPN: Rose Bowl, No. 3 seed vs. No. 6 Alabama Each of ESPN's bowl projectionists is forecasting a Penn State vs. Alabama matchup in the Rose Bowl, although the seeding differs slightly. Kyle Bonagura gives Penn State a higher seed compared to Mark Schlabach, although both college football analysts predict Penn State will advance to the semifinal round. Bonagura has Penn State facing Ohio State in the Peach Bowl in the semifinal round, but Schlabach has the Nittany Lions taking on Clemson, also in the Peach Bowl. Bonagura has Penn State advancing to the national championship to face the Texas Longhorns, but Schlabach sees Penn State's run come to an end in Atlanta. Steven Lassan, Athlon Sports: Rose Bowl, No. 2 seed vs. No. 7 LSU Another Rose Bowl prediction for Penn State comes from Athlon Sports. College football editor Steven Lassan has Penn State taking care of the LSU Tigers in Pasadena and then getting by Ohio State in the Peach Bowl to advance to the national championship game. But this is where things go south as Athlon Sports' writer has Penn State losing to Texas in the national title game. Bill Bender, Sporting News: First-round No. 5 seed vs. No. 12 Navy Well, here is a pick that goes against the grain a bit. Bill Bender of Sporting News has Penn State missing out on a first-round bye and hosting a first-round playoff game in Beaver Stadium for a second consecutive season. This time around, Bender has Penn State hosting Navy, which would be coming out of The American. Bender does have Penn State winning at home and then getting by Clemson in the Orange Bowl in the quarterfinal round. But Bender has Penn State's run once again ending in the semifinal round, this time at the expense of projected No. 1 seed Texas in the Peach Bowl. More rosy predictions on the way? Given Penn State's lofty preseason ranking in the US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25, we can only imagine there will be more Rose Bowl projections on the way for Penn State. Even if not placed in the Rose Bowl, Penn State is clearly an easy pick to place in the College Football Playoff this upcoming season. We will still have to see where Penn State is heading in the USA TODAY Sports bowl projections once they are available. Penn State's season kicks off on Saturday, August 30, against Nevada. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Follow Kevin McGuire on Threads, Bluesky, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Follow Nittany Lions Wire on X, Facebook, and Threads.

Notre Dame football practice highlights from Friday shared on social media
Notre Dame football was back on the field Friday afternoon, and we found out some interesting news about star running back Jeremiyah Love and a potential role with the special teams unit. That wasn't all we saw, as there were more than a few clips of practice shared on social media. We got to see some of the Irish players getting back from injurIes, a few of the younger members of the team getting some run previewing the future, and a Tyler Buchner sighting. Check out some of the videos of Notre Dame Friday practice that were shared on social media below. Jeremiyah Love showing his hands The chatter connecting Love and the Heisman trophy might end up being more than that. If he actually does return kickoffs and has a few more opportunities through the air, he's going to New York City. Love's development into an all-around player has been a joy to watch, and this should be a massive season for him. Tyler Buchner with the 3rd-team offense Buchner transitioned back to the quarterback room to help out the younger potential starters in CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey, and while he's not in the running for the job, he can still make plays. He's connecting with a future Irish star in wide receiver Jerome Bettis Jr. Is Boubacar Traore back? This could be a huge development for Notre Dame if Traore is back to full-strength for the opener against Miami. Before his injury against Purdue, he was looking like a breakout star. It will have to wait until this season, but it's looking like he'll be ready to go. Can freshman James Flanigan earn playing time? Losing Kevin Bauman for the season hurt the depth chart at tight end, a position that already had a few questions marks about would step up next. It's not like this unit isn't talented, like the quarterbacks, they just don't have much experience at this level. Flanigan could be one to have an important role in the Irish offense if the others don't perform up to expectations. The future at offensive line Three young players on the Irish line are already gelling together in Houstan, Herron and Black. The former 5-star in Black has been taking reps inside as the coaching staff already feels confident that he can play tackle at this level. Flexibility among the offensive line is something that Joe Rudolph loves, as he's not afraid to play his top players regardless of what position they entered the program as. Jordan Botehlo continues to progress back from injury Another defensive lineman working back from an injury is Botelho, and while he might not have the same impact as Traore, his return will help with depth. The last team we saw him, he was favoring his left arm, and from this clip, it looks like he's getting closer to being fully healthy. Saints Could Cut Ties With Former Chiefs Super Bowl Champion
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New Orleans Saints are certainly not viewed as playoff contenders heading into the 2025 NFL season, as they have a very unsettled quarterback situation and gaping holes on both sides of the ball. As you would expect from a rebuilding team, the Saints seem to be prioritizing youth, which is why some of their veterans may not be safe before Week 1. More news: Patrick Mahomes Haters Will Love This Scathing Chiefs Prediction Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport listed off one top cut candidate for each NFL prior to the coming season, and for the Saints, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire was the choice. "Alvin Kamara is the unquestioned lead back in the Big Easy. Kendre Miller appears safely entrenched as the RB2," Davenport wrote. "With Devin Neal and Velus Jones Jr. widely projected to round out the position group, both Edwards-Helaire and Cam Akers are former NFL starters who could be searching for new homes after cutdown day." The New Orleans Saints will welcome vaccinated fans to the Superdome at full capacity this NFL season, as well as those providing negative COVID-19 tests. Those who don't wish to comply with the rules, including season ticket holders, will not be given refunds. This image shows a Saints helmet at M&T Bank Stadium on August 14, 2021 in Baltimore, Maryland. More Scott Taetsch/Getty Edwards-Helaire barely saw the field during his debut campaign with New Orleans last year, appearing in just two games and carrying the ball 13 times for 46 yards. With the Saints having so many other options in their backfield, Davenport is right in asserting that Edwards-Helaire is absolutely on the chopping block. The 26-year-old has certainly not materialized like everyone hoped when the Kansas City Chiefs selected him in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Edwards-Helaire did show some promise in Year 1, registering 803 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 4.4 yards per carry while also catching 36 passes for 297 yards and a score. However, it did not take long for the LSU product to experience a sharp downturn. The following season, Edwards-Helaire totaled 517 yards while reaching the end zone four times as a rusher, playing in just 10 games. Injuries have largely derailed him ever since, with the Baton Rouge, La. native appearing in just 37 contests over the last four seasons. More news: Insider Reveals Bad News for 49ers' Critical Defender Edwards-Helaire did manage to win a Super Bowl with the Chiefs in 2023, although his role was incredibly limited. That season, he logged 223 yards and a touchdown as a rusher, serving as Kansas City's No. 2 running back behind Isiah Pacheco. At this point, Edwards-Helaire's NFL future is undoubtedly in jeopardy, especially if the Saints end up releasing him before the start of the season. He definitely had a strong collegiate career, racking up 1,414 yards and 16 touchdowns on 6.6 yards per attempt during his final year at LSU, but that obviously has not translated onto the professional level. We'll see if New Orleans ends up pulling the plug on Edwards-Helaire before long. For more on the Saints and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.
