With nearly 200 locations across Hong Kong,
this casual noodle shop may be a chain, but it's a vital part of Hong Kong's dining culture. Its place in the city's food scene has led to collaborations with airlines, as well as make-up, chips and beer brands.
TamJai SamGor offers Yunnan-style rice noodles and diners can select their toppings, noodle type and – perhaps most importantly – a soup base that meets their desired spice level. The chain operates under two brands – TamJai SamGor and TamJai Yunnan Mixian – but they split into different chains after a shareholder dispute, and were only reunited when both were bought by Japan's Toridoll in 2018. Most locals, however, still swear by one chain or the other. While the two offer very similar menus, TamJai SamGor carries a reputation for having a wider variety of soup bases – not only do they offer different levels of spice, but also multiple types of heat, such as hot and sour, numbing mala spice and aromatic charred pepper spice.

This dai pai dong (a local open-air food stall) is known for its vibrantly red and flavourful tomato broth instant noodles, attracting queues of tourists and locals alike. Customise it to your liking by choosing your desired toppings, such as the popular fried egg and luncheon meat or sliced beef. While instant noodles are great at soaking up the broth and adding a fattiness that balances the tomato broth's acidity, you can also swap out the noodles for macaroni – the hollow centre provides more sauce-trapping opportunities. Be sure to add a side of toast with condensed milk and a glass of iced milk tea for the ultimate sweet and savoury combo.

Waiting time for Hong Kong public rental flat rises slightly to 5.4 years
The average waiting time for a Hong Kong public rental flat increased slightly to 5.4 years in the second quarter of 2025 from 5.3 years in the first three months of the year despite a significant drop in the number of applications, according to the Housing Authority. The authority, the city's largest public housing provider, on Thursday pointed to applicants being allocated refurbished public housing recovered from tenants or evicted due to abuse of resources in urban areas. It also revealed that about 3,000 general applicants – families or elderly households – were allocated flats between April and June. Among them, 2,900 households were given refurbished homes recovered from tenants, including those who surrendered their properties after purchasing subsidised flats or were evicted due to tenancy abuse, while the remaining families were allocated flats in Yip Wong Estate in Tuen Mun or Pak Tin Estate in Sham Shui Po. As of June, the city had about 115,700 general applicants for public rental homes, a 26 per cent drop from the peak of 156,400 cases in September 2020. About 360 non-elderly single applicants were housed in public rental homes in the second quarter. As of June, there were about 86,100 applicants, a 40 per cent drop from the peak of 143,700 cases in December 2015.

China and Australia ready for ‘more productive' relationship, Beijing's ambassador says
China and Australia are ready to 'move beyond' stabilising relations and aim for 'more productive' economic cooperation, according to Beijing's ambassador Xiao Qian. There could be a 'closer alignment' between the Australian mining and Chinese manufacturing sectors through 'joint exploration, technology sharing and capacity enhancement', Xiao told a trade expo on Thursday. He said both countries had 'highly compatible' development strategies and 'can fully complement each other's strengths, collaborate in a coordinated manner and jointly build green, secure and sustainable' industrial chains. Earlier this week, the Australian mining giant Fortescue announced it had secured an offshore yuan-denominated loan worth 14.2 billion yuan (US$1.98 billion) from a syndicate led by Bank of China to support its decarbonisation plans. China has been Australia's largest trading partner, export market and source of imports for the past 16 years. However, after ties soured in 2019 and 2020, Australian goods were hit by a series of export curbs that Beijing only lifted at the end of last year.

Insta360's Antigravity unveils 8K full-degree drone, challenging DJI
Antigravity, a drone brand incubated by China's leading full-degree camera manufacturer Insta360, on Thursday unveiled its first product – the Antigravity A1 featuring a built-in 8K 360-degree camera and pilot goggles. Advertisement The machine is equipped with a dual-lens camera system mounted on both the top and bottom of its fuselage – a design that mirrors the capabilities of Insta360's popular X series action cameras, providing complete environmental capture without any blind spots, according to Antigravity. Included with the drone is a pair of goggles and a hand controller, enabling pilots to fly the craft using a drone's-eye view. Similar to Insta360's cameras, the A1 is said to be able to record all angles, allowing footage to be replayed in 360 degrees. Weighing 249 grams, the A1 'meets regulatory requirements in most countries and regions' and is set to hit global markets in January, according to the company.
