'Gavaskar poore India ko hila ke rakh dega': Ex-India pacer on Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy name change
Former India all-rounder
Karsan Ghavri
has criticised
Sachin Tendulkar
and the BCCI for allowing the historic Pataudi Trophy to be renamed as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which was first contested between India and England in July-August this year ending in a 2-2 draw.
Ghavri expressed strong disapproval of the name change, calling it disrespectful to Tiger Pataudi's legacy in Indian cricket.
Ghavri highlighted how other prestigious bilateral cricket trophies have maintained their historic names.
Sachin Tendulkar Honoured at Lord's
"That is very wrong. Number one, the Australia-West Indies series is always called the Frank Worrell Trophy. The India-Australia Trophy is always called the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
If its name changed, Gavaskar poore India ko hila ke rakh dega (Gavaskar will create a lot of noise)," Ghavri stated in a conversation with Vicky Lalwani on YouTube.
The former cricketer placed significant responsibility on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for not opposing the decision more firmly in discussions with the MCC and ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board).
"The BCCI should've put its foot down with the MCC and the ECB.

Tiger's name shouldn't have been removed," Ghavri stressed.
While acknowledging that Tendulkar did initially object to the renaming, Ghavri felt the cricket legend should have taken a stronger stance against the change.
"In the same context, when it came to Sachin Tendulkar, that this trophy would be changed, and this trophy would be named after you and Anderson, Sachin should've said no. Objection is different," Ghavri remarked.
Poll
Do you agree with Karsan Ghavri's criticism of the renaming of the Pataudi Trophy?
Yes, it's disrespectful to Pataudi's legacy.
No, it's a fitting tribute to Tendulkar.
Not sure, need more information.
Ghavri, who played 39 Tests for India, suggested an alternative approach that could have preserved Pataudi's legacy while still honouring Tendulkar and Anderson.
"In the first place, you should've put your foot down and should've said 'No, I don't want to use my name because Tiger Pataudi's name is already there. He's a legend of Indian cricket. If you want to give medals, use our name. Trophy's name should remain the same'," he stated.
The former all-rounder expressed particular concern about the implications of the name change for Pataudi's status in Indian cricket history.
"First of all, this question should've never been raised. You're degrading somebody of a great stature," Ghavri declared.
The inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series demonstrated high-quality cricket from both teams, with India's Shubman Gill scoring 754 runs across five Tests in his first series as captain.
Mohammed Siraj led the Indian bowling attack effectively during the series, claiming 23 wickets in nine innings, the highest among all bowlers.
The series ultimately concluded with both teams sharing honours in a 2-2 draw, marking the first contest under the new trophy name that had replaced the long-standing Pataudi Trophy.

Sanju Samson has 'obvious issues with...'; set for Asia Cup heartbreak after Shubman Gill's return: 'He struggled to...'
The arrival of Shubman Gill in India's T20I scheme of things is not good news for Sanju Samson. Contrary to the initial expectations, Gill was believed to wait for his return to India's T20I squad, but when the BCCI chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, announced his name as the vice-captain, Samson's fate was sealed. The opening pair of Samson and Abhishek Sharma was the one constant India was supposed to stick with for their Asia Cup campaign, but since there's no way the vice-captain will be benched, Samson, unfortunately, through no fault of his own, will have to make way. Shubman Gill, left, and Sanju Samson during the IPL earlier this year(BCCI) So what is it about Samson, eh? The man made his India debut in 2015; how come, even after 10 years of being around in the international set-up, he hasn't been able to cement his place? The T20 is his favourite hunting ground, given the success he has enjoyed in the IPL, but with Gill returning to the opening position along with Abhishek, Samson's relegation becomes a well-known fact. He sure is part of the Asia Cup squad, but chances of Samson playing in the XI look dim, especially with Jitesh Sharma set to be the designated wicketkeeper in the absence of Rishabh Pant. Just recently, Samson, during his chat with Ravichandran Ashwin on the latter's YouTube channel, revealed how India's head coach Gautam Gambhir assured him he won't be dropped, not even after he scores 21 ducks in a row. So how did things go downhill so quickly? Former BCCI selector Devang Gandhi has the answer. "You can't ignore the talent Samson has. But he is already close to 31. If he couldn't seal his place, it's because he could never be consistent, even in the IPL. There are obvious issues with him playing the heavy ball,' he told The Times of India. Gandhi makes somewhat of a valid point. Samson was troubled by the short ball earlier this year when England played 5 T20Is against them in January-February. To the extent that Samson's impressive figures across last year don't stand much of a chance. And boy, those are some numbers. In 2024, Samson smashed three T20I centuries for India, and as an opener has better numbers – 522 runs from 17 innings – than in the middle order – 339 runs from 21. Samson also became just the sixth player to score back-to-back T20I centuries. Gandhi, however, reaffirms that the door hasn't shut entirely on Samson. If he does well, given a chance, Samson can prolong his T20I career for India. But the question remains: What is the definition of doing well if scoring all those runs isn't? "He probably fell behind because he struggled to play the pace of England's bowling attack at home. But if he can show he is flexible enough, he can finally seal his spot," Gandhi, who played 4 Tests and 3 ODIs for India, added.

Dream11 to shut real money gaming operations, focus on alternatives, says report
Dream Sports, the parent company of fantasy gaming major Dream11, is reportedly set to shut down its real money gaming (RMG) operations, following India's new Online Gaming Bill 2025, according to Entrackr, citing sources. Livemint reached out to the company seeking an official statement on the report, and Dream11 declined to comment. Speaking to the publication, the sources said that staff was informed about the decision to shut down real money gaming operations via an internal town hall on August 20. They added that RMG contributes to over 67 per cent of Dream Sports' annual revenues. The Entrackr report further cited another source saying that Dream11 will move from RMG to expand instead into non-real money options such as Sportz Drip and Fancode. Besides this, focus will reportedly also move to its other investments such as Willow TV and Cricbuzz and expansion into overseas markets. 'The firm is also likely to explore new game formats for overseas markets, similar to the strategy adopted by Mobile Premier League (MPL),' a second source the online publication. This source added that impact of the RMG section would have a ripple effect, triggering 'severe cost-cutting measures, including mass layoffs, as the RMG business employed the majority of the firm's workforce'. The Rajya Sabha on August 21 approved the Online Gaming Bill, 2025, sealing the deal on the Indian government banning all forms of online money games in the country. The bill was approved by the Lok Sabha on August 20. The bill 'Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025' was presented in the Upper House by Union Minister of Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw, who said the legislation will promote two-thirds of the online gaming segment, but will ban online money games, 'which have become a big problem for society, especially middle-class youth'. 'There is addiction. The family's savings are lost. It is estimated that 45 crore people have fallen victim to it. More than ₹ 20,000 crore of our middle-class families' hard-earned money has been destroyed,' Vaishnaw said. Besides online real money gaming, the bill also seeks to prohibit ads related to such games, and bars banks and financial institutions from facilitating or transferring funds for any of such games. Online money games are played by depositing money in expectation of winning monetary and other rewards. The bill proposes that any person offering an online money gaming service in violation of the stipulated provisions will face imprisonment of up to three years or a fine that may extend to ₹ 1 crore or both. 1 crore or both. The provisions also stipulate imprisonment of up to two years and or a fine of up to ₹ 50 lakh, or both, for those indulging in advertisements in contravention of rules.

Will KL Rahul, Siraj play Duleep Trophy? BCCI tells state associations to pick India players after top Test cricketers were ignored by South Zone
Irked by the non-selection of top players like KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj for the Duleep Trophy squad by South Zone, the BCCI has sent a letter to all state associations to select centrally contracted cricketers for the domestic season opener. The BCCI sent an email last week after a few associations didn't pick international players for the premier domestic tournament scheduled to start on August 28 in Bengaluru. The move was primarily triggered by South Zone's decision not to select Rahul, Washington Sundar, Prasidh Krishna, Sai Sudharsan, and Siraj. The Indian players are currently getting a month-long break after the England tour. The BCCI's general manager cricket operations Abey Kuruvilla emailed the associations about the need to honour the premier domestic tournament. 'To uphold its prestige and ensure the highest quality of competition, it's imperative that all currently available India players are selected for their respective zonal teams. Requesting the Zonal Convenors to ensure that all the current India players who are available to play Duleep trophy should be picked,' Kuruvilla wrote in an email accessed by The Indian Express. Last year, in February, the BCCI had laid down the rule that it's 'mandatory' for international players to make themselves available for all domestic cricket, after they had noticed a trend of some players 'prioritising IPL over domestic cricket'. This year, again, after the series in Australia concluded in January, the board had yet again reiterated that it was mandatory for players to play domestic cricket. However, many state associations feel that international stars should play for India A or Board president XI teams instead of Duleep or Deodhar Trophy. Their reason is that because of this influx of national players, the Ranji players who had worked hard through a season are forced to make way for international stars in Duleep Trophy. They argue that their players who had done well in past seasons don't get rewarded for their performance once these Indian players walk into the side. South Zone was the first team to pick their Duleep Trophy squad on July 27 and they named Tilak Varma as the captain. The BCCI hadn't issued their diktat at that point. However, there is no clarity whether South Zone will change their squad now, post the email from Kuruvilla. Top players like Shubman Gill (Test captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kuldeep Yadav, Akash Deep, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Shreyas Iyer will be playing for their respective zones in the upcoming Duleep Trophy. Additionally, in his mail, Kuruvilla had written that all the contracted players have to adhere to the guidelines sent to them. 'Participation in domestic matches: All players contracted or otherwise, who make themselves available for selection into team India, shall participate in domestic matches conducted by BCCI. In case, any player opts not to participate in any domestic cricket tournaments in spite of availability, he/she shall not be considered for selection unless a prior recommendation is obtained to skip the match/tournament form the National coach and the chairman of selection committee, and prior approval from the BCCI. In case of any leave is granted the same shall be considered on the basis of some valid and cogent reason,' Kuruvilla added. For the 2025 Duleep Trophy, the teams are selected by zonal selectors, not the national selectors, as the tournament has returned to a zonal format. Last season, it was a national selector-picked, team-based tournament. The Indian board this year decided to return to the traditional zonal-based format.
