UFC veteran Jared Cannonier refuses ‘gatekeeper' tag after emphatic TKO against Gregory Rodrigues

Independent17-02-2025

Jared Cannonier has said he refuses to be a gatekeeper in the UFC, having seen off 33-year-old Gregory Rodrigues at the age of 40 on Saturday.
Cannonier is one of two UFC fighters, alongside Conor McGregor, to hold knockout wins at three weights. His fourth-round TKO of Rodrigues was his latest stoppage at middleweight, where he challenged for the title in 2022.
And Cannonier, despite his advanced age as far as sport goes, believes he can vie for gold again.
'I would like somebody ranked higher than me,' said the American, No 7 in the division, at a post-fight press conference. 'Unfortunately, all the people ranked higher than me are either in line to get a title shot, are gonna wait for a title shot, or [they] just beat me.
'Four people in the rankings ahead of me have beaten me. Dricus [Du Plessis] and Khamzat [Chimaev] are the only ones I haven't fought. As long as I keep winning, [I've got rematches ahead of me]. But I'm not gonna rule anything out. Shoot, if they say, 'Hey, Jared, we need you to fight Dricus next for the belt,' I'm like: 'Hell, yes, I'm ready.'
'I don't think anybody's put that [gatekeeper] tag on me, it was just when I was doing all these interviews, the way I was answering all these questions... it sounded as if I was a gatekeeper. You guys kept saying: 'You're fighting this up-and-comer,' 'You're fighting a second up-and-comer,' 'You're fighting another up-and-comer.' Doesn't that sound like, 'Hey, you're a gatekeeper'?
'That's not how I see myself, though. That's never how I'm gonna see myself, that's never what I'm going to be. I'm not a gatekeeper, I am – I don't know – a fighter. I couldn't come up with anything clever, so!'
Cannonier was dropped twice by Rodrigues in round one, before fighting back to almost finish the Brazilian in round three. 'I didn't hear the bell ring at the end of that round,' Cannonier revealed in the cage after the bout, 'so I thought I'd finished the fight. I got up and was looking around like, 'How come nobody's as excited as I am?' Then they reaffirmed that it was just the end of the round.'
Cannonier would ultimately seal the win in round four, dropping Rodrigues with a barrage of strikes against the fence.
'My corner continued to deliver the message of how they saw it on the outside,' Cannonier said. 'I had him against the ropes, he was hurt, he was slowing down, I was able to finish. My energy... I felt great, I could do this for five more rounds if we needed to – without getting hit, of course!
'I guess I was hurt enough [in round one] to get dropped on my ass a couple times, but naturally so: Gregory hits hard as hell, and he was slinging big f***ing shots. I was able to weather the storm and keep my composure even in those really tough spots, and work my way back up to my feet. I'd rather die on my feet than die on my back.'

Match of the Day pundit pinpoints CBS contrast – 'It'd never happen at the BBC'

Former England defender and Match of the Day star Micah Richards has shed light on a key cultural difference between the BBC and American network CBS, which he covers the Champions League for Match of the Day's Micah Richards has opened up about a 'mad' party thrown in his honour by network CBS the night before the Champions League final. The ex-England star admitted that the BBC would never plan such an event. Richards, who retired in 2019 and immediately transitioned into punditry, provides insight across various platforms. He has starred on Match of the Day and brought laughter to Sky Sports ' coverage of the Premier League. CBS began broadcasting European football five years ago, introducing him to an American audience. ‌ While working for stateside employers, Richards has made it clear that culturally, things differ from appearing for the BBC, which operates under a Royal Charter and is, therefore, a public corporation funded primarily by TV license fees. ‌ Operating for the public good means the historically revered Beeb holds itself to incredibly high standards, and coverage of the FA Cup and World Cup, for example, is no exception. The 36-year-old has now illuminated a huge difference between the British broadcaster and the US-based CBS, epitomised by a party thrown the night before last month's Champions League final. "We got there, the sun is shining. I was drinking until about four o'clock in the morning on the Thursday night. Friday night, CBS only threw me my own party!" a bewildered Richards told Gary Lineker and Match of the Day colleague Alan Shearer on The Rest Is Football podcast. "Bearing in mind we've got the Champions League final on the Saturday night and I've been hanging for weeks before that as well. Imagine us at the Beeb throwing a party the night before, say, the FA Cup final or the World Cup final. "It would never, ever happen. CBS just embrace it. I got there thinking it's just a CBS party. I get there, the big massive flyer says: 'Big Meeks' Party.' It was madness." ‌ While cultural differences would likely prevent the BBC from allowing its staff to indulge in such revelries and borderline unprofessionalism, CBS' Champions League final broadcast went off without a hitch. Richards appeared alongside presenter Kate Scott and fellow ex-pros Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher. Actor Tom Cruise and David Beckham were also part of the build-up to the kick-off in Munich. Yet, Richards' path to the German capital was not without its tribulations, and he detailed that a fear of flying made for an awkward journey. ‌ "For those who don't know, I don't like flying. So, me, the absolute idiot, decides to look at a route from Harrogate all the way to Munich," he continued. "I thought, 'Ok, if I get to London, it's not gonna be too bad.' So I get to London, which is three hours door to door. "Then I went to get the train from London, and it was supposed to go to Brussels. It got cancelled, so now I'm sweating, thinking what I could possibly do! I'm scrambling on my apps. "I went from London to Paris, then I had to wait a couple of hours. Paris to Stuttgart. Had to wait a couple hours, then Stuttgart to Munich, and when I got there, I was absolutely exhausted."

Tyson Fury backed for Francis Ngannou rematch with very different rules

The pair first went head-to-head in the boxing ring back in 2023 - but a former boxing world champion has called for the two heavyweights to rematch in a different setting British boxing legend George Groves has backed Tyson Fury to rematch Francis Ngannou - but this time in a cage. Ngannou - a former UFC heavyweight champion - made his professional boxing debut against Fury back in 2023. The 'Predator' shocked the world after scoring a knockdown in the contest - but would ultimately end up losing the dust-up on points. ‌ The ex-UFC star has only fought once more in the ring - a knockout loss to Anthony Joshua in March 2024. Ngannou made the return to the MMA cage seven months later and would go on to knock Renan Ferreira out inside the first round. With the 38-year-old eager to get back in the cage soon, there are no real top contenders for the Cameroon native in the PFL. ‌ However, Groves has a unique proposition. The former boxing world champion has called for Fury to rematch Ngannou in the cage following their fight in the boxing ring. In an interview with Action Network, when asked about Fury potentially making a return to fighting, he said: "I think he will come back and fight Anthony Joshua if there are guaranteed purses. "If you are going to fight Joshua, then it has to be soon and maybe they will announce that fight straight after Usyk v Dubois and the winner will still dream of becoming world champion again. But I would like to see Tyson Fury do something different and get in the cage. "I heard rumours of him fighting Francis Ngannou in the cage and that sounds brilliant, I would 100% pay for that. I'm all over that. He's a very good athlete who can chop and change, let's see if he can learn some wrestling or Jujitsu and a bit of defence before putting on some 4oz gloves on and see if he can put Ngannou away." He added: "Francis Ngannou stepped into Fury's domain and give him a run for his money and should've won but Fury got away with it. Let's see if Fury can return the favour by jumping in the Octagon and have a scrap with Ngannou, that's what I would like to see. Fury is past his best as a boxer, but he has not been sitting on the couch for six or seven years. He boxed less than a year ago, is a fit athlete and maybe he's already been in the gym with the cage fighters and the MMA guys. I'd love to see him in the cage next." Fury announced his retirement from boxing earlier this year. However, the 36-year-old has teased a potential return to competition over the last few weeks. While Groves' comments may come as a bit of a shock, the 'Gypsy King' does have some slight experience in the world of MMA. In 2021, MMA star Nick Diaz took to social media to show footage of a training session he did with Fury. The Brit responded by noting how much fun he'd had working on the ground game. Diaz and his brother Nate are both jiu-jitsu experts, and he likely showed Fury the ropes during a gym session. In a comment under the elder Diaz brother's post, Fury said: "Nice bit of rolling around the mat." A year later, Fury's close friend and former training partner Tom Aspinall opened up on training with the boxing icon. He told Sky Sports: 'I've grappled with him [Fury] before. He's interested in it. So, I know he's done bits of grappling, bits of kicks, and all that. He was down in our gym training with Darren Till before, doing kicks on the pads and all that stuff. So, he's definitely got interest in it. I don't know. I'd love to see it, though.'

The Eagles sealed a place in the Europa League group stages for the first time in their history by beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final. There was hope at Selhurst Park that a quick resolution would be found, but Uefa's Club Financial Control Body is not expected to announce their decision until the end of this month. Uefa rules on multi-club ownership prevent any two clubs controlled by the same person or group from competing in the same competition. Both Palace and Lyon have qualified for next year's Europa League, but the Ligue 1 side would have precedence as they finished higher in their domestic league. The American could have placed his Eagles shares into a blind trust, as many other owners have done to avoid this outcome, though the deadline to do so was March 1. Palace have already met with Uefa in Switzerland arguing that Textor has no controlling influence at Crystal Palace. While he is the largest shareholder, the billionaire has an equal 25 per cent voting right and has complained about a lack of control and influence in the past. A resolution could come sooner should Textor simply sell his shares. Crystal Palace could be KICKED OUT of Europa League before a ball is even kicked The 59-year-old has been looking to sell his stake in Palace for some time now following a breakdown in relations with chairman Steve Parish. Textor, who tried to buy Everton last year, is now thought to be open to selling his shares to fellow American investors David Blitzer and Joshua Harris. Any deal would be difficult to complete in such a short timeframe, though it would immediately put an end to any concerns over breaching Uefa rules. Were the CFBC to find against Palace, Forest would move up into their Europa League spot from the Conference League while Brighton would find themselves in Europe.
