More recently, Manchester City became the dominant force in the English Premier League under coach Pep Guardiola with six titles between 2017 and 2024.
With Manchester United currently experiencing one of the worst periods in their history, it seems a lifetime ago that they were almost untouchable under Alex Ferguson . The Red Devils won an incredible 13 league titles between 1992 and 2013 under Ferguson.
Looking back, there's always a sense of nostalgia, like when we see Woods hobble his way around a golf course now and the broadcaster shows a flashback of his heyday.
Like Manchester United under Alex Ferguson, Tiger Woods in the early 2000s, Michael Schumacher in F1, total domination in sport makes it boring for the neutral fans.
Mamelodi Sundowns Secure Historic Eighth Consecutive League Title
As impressive as these achievements are, they are eclipsed by the eight league titles in a row that Mamelodi Sundowns clinched on Wednesday evening.
A 3-0 romp over Chippa United in East London meant Sundowns won the Betway Premiership with a game to spare. In fact, they probably would have won it sooner, but second-placed Orlando Pirates have three games in hand over Sundowns.
It's also no secret that the Patrice Motsepe-owned Sundowns are the richest football club not only in South Africa, but the entire continent.
Not that they were struggling for cash, but Mamelodi Sundowns will earn a handy R174 million simply for playing in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup next month.
FIFA had initially targeted a much larger participation fee of $50 million (around R911 million), but apparent issues the tournament ran into over sponsorships and broadcasting revenue saw the final figure radically reduced. Teams will also be awarded around R36m per win and R18m per draw in the group stages.
A total prize money of 1 billion US dollars (R18.2 billion) was confirmed for the tournament by FIFA. The winners of the event will pocket R2.2 billion.
It seems then, the domination of Sundowns is set to continue and until their reign is over, other clashes like the Soweto Derbies will remain the highlight of the SA football calendar every season.

But the Belgian would no doubt have been pleased with some of the players he handed debuts to in a friendly international intended for blooding new players. Khulumani Ndamani walked away with the man of the match award in his maiden appearance for the country's senior national team and expressed a desire to continue wearing the gold and green in future. On a night when the regular Bafana players were absent, the squad missed all the Mamelodi Sundowns players who usually make up the bulk of the starting line-up, the newbies gave as good as they got against a pretty physical Tanzania outfit that was clearly out to impress. Guided by the likes of Patrick Maswanganyi and Oswin Appolis who have been in the squad for a while now, Bafana controlled proceedings and asked questions of the visitors early on with the latter seeing his attempt that was headed for goal cleared just before it crossed the line on ten minutes. It could well have been that he was playing in the city where he plays his club football because Appollis was bafana's livewire and had two other chances, one a shot late in the half which the Tanzanian goalkeeper saved with consummate ease. He then blasted a free kick against the wall shortly after the break. Another Bafana 'oldie' Thalenthe Mbatha disturbed the bats' flying pattern with a rugby style shot late in the first half as the hosts looked to make their dominance count for a goal. Besides Ndanmane, Broos also handed new caps to Deano Van Rooyen and Simphiwe Selepe from the onset while goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner came on for Ricardo Goss during the second half. Relebohile Mofokeng came on late in the game and almost scored when he lobbed the advanced goalkeeper but only succeeded in landing the ball on the roof of the net. Tanzania played a pretty physical match with some crunching tackles that left Broos jumping up and down the sidelines in anger. He would have, however, been pleased with the exercise of handing out new caps in a bid to grow his pool of players ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September as wella s the Africa Cup of Nations finals set to take place in Morocco at the end of the year. Bafana are due to play against Mozambique at the same venue on Tuesday.

Bafana and Tanzania in dull goalless draw
Bafana Bafana were held to a 0-0 draw by Tanzania during their dull international friendly at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday night. Bafana coach Hugo Broos said the result is not important in this match but they will have to give an improved performance when they host Mozambique at the same venue on Tuesday. It was a match of few notable moments where Broos gave opportunities to Ricardo Goss, Deano van Rooyen, Thabo Moloisane, Kulumane Ndamane, Fawaaz Basadien, Simphiwe Selepe, Tshepang Moremi and Ashley Cupido in the starting line-up. Some of the Bafana ordinarily would not be considered but they benefited from the absence of their Mamelodi Sundowns counterparts who leaves at the weekend for the Fifa Club World Cup in the US. Broos left Sipho Chaine, Nyiko Mobbie, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Luke le Roux and Relebohile Mofokeng, who have been with the team in the recent past, to provide options in the second half.

Kaizer Chiefs set to snatch rising star Ime Okon from rivals
Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly closing in on a major signing ahead of the 2025/2026 season, with highly-rated defender Ime Okon believed to be on the brink of joining the Soweto giants. The 21-year-old's contract with SuperSport United ends this month, allowing him to leave as a free agent, and Chiefs have wasted no time in making their move. After lifting the Nedbank Cup, Amakhosi are determined to build a squad capable of challenging on all fronts under incoming coach Nasreddine Nabi. Okon, who has drawn attention with his physical presence and calmness on the ball, is understood to be a key piece in that puzzle. 'They (Kaizer Chiefs) see him (Ime Okon) as a long-term solution at centre-back. I mean, he is only 21 and he could challenge (Inacio) Miguel, who is almost 30, for that position. On top of that, his contract expires soon,' a source told The South African . Okon previously caught the eye of scouts abroad, having attended trials with Danish top-tier side FC Midtjylland and Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv over the past 18 months. Despite impressing, no deal came to fruition, and he returned to see out his contract with Matsatsantsa. This presented Chiefs with a golden opportunity, and they appear poised to capitalise. Okon recently featured for Bafana Bafana in the COSAFA Cup. Which further strengthens his reputation as one of South Africa's most promising young centre-backs. His potential, youth, and international exposure make him an attractive prospect for a club eager to rebuild and restore glory. With negotiations believed to be at an advanced stage.
