Organised crime links suspected in Sydney inner-city pub shooting

Police are searching for offenders after a "brazen and callous" shooting that left one man dead and another seriously injured in Sydney's inner-city.
Officers were called to The Harold hotel on Ross Street in Forest Lodge on Sunday night, following reports of a shooting.
The victims were alleged to have been making their way to their car, but as they got closer to the vehicle, they were ambushed and met with a spray of bullets. Police believe it was a targeted shooting.
One shot narrowly missed a female staff member, hitting the window of the pub.
Paramedics treated the two men at the scene, but one, a 39-year-old, was unable to be saved.
Police said the other man, 31, allegedly had a background in organised crime, and was treated for gunshot wounds and taken to the hospital in a serious condition.
He was not only assisted by paramedics, but medical students and a local doctor who were nearby the pub at the time.
The search for suspects continues as police look for a dark coloured vehicle.
Authorities have called on the public to provide any dash cam footage around the area at the time of the shooting, or any information about the attack.
Large sections of Wigram Road and Ross Street remained sealed off by police tape on Monday morning, with roadblocks causing traffic disruption across Glebe, Forest Lodge and Annandale.
Buses on routes 433 and 469 were being diverted around the scene.
Crime scene investigators laid out markers where bullet casings lay scattered across footpaths opposite The Harold.
One local resident, who did not want to be identified, confirmed there were 12 to 15 gunshots.
"At first I thought it might be fireworks, but then there was a second burst, and it was clear then they were gunshots," she said.
NSW Premier Chris Minns described the shooting as a violent criminal act in a suburban pub.
"It's deplorable, it's disgusting, it's the kind of thing that you don't expect to see in a reasonably safe city like Sydney," he said on Monday morning.
Mr Minns said while he could not promise an end to the violence, he could guarantee a comprehensive police response.

Victim's girlfriend among nine South Carolina teens arrested in 16-year-old's murder, alleged set up

Nine teenagers in South Carolina were arrested in a plot to lure a 16-year-old boy to his death, and even the victim's own girlfriend was in on the murderous scheme, according to authorities. Trey Dean Wright, 16, was found dead on June 24 with multiple gunshot wounds on First Neck Road in Florence County, roughly 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach, Fox News reported. Devan Scott Raper, 19, of Conway, is accused of fatally shooting Wright in an argument over a girl and was arrested the following day by the Florence County Sheriff's office. But officials said Raper didn't act alone. In the weeks since, eight other teens have been nabbed for their alleged roles in the dark scheme and are now facing charges for setting up Wright and recording his death on video — including the poor victim's girlfriend. Giann Kistenmacher, Wright's 17-year-old girlfriend, was charged with being an accessory before the fact for bringing Raper — who she knew was armed — to meet Wright and instigate a confrontation, the sheriff's office said. Others charged in the set-up included 18-year-olds Corrine Belviso and Hunter Kendall and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns. Authorities have not released information on the four remaining individuals who have been charged in the crime because they are minors. 'They were complicit in bringing the armed codependent, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation,' Maj. Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff's Office told WBTW-TV. 'They knew that Raper had presented a firearm to the victim and made threats to shoot him, according to the arrest warrant,' Nunn stated. Officers stated the motivation for the cold-blooded killing was romantic rivalry. 'They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,' Sheriff T.J. Joye told WBTW. 'The sad thing is, you got a 16-year-old that lost his life. You've got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?' the sheriff asked rhetorically. Raper faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime and is being held without bond. Qantas fined $90 million for illegally sacking ground staff

Australia's largest airline has been ordered to pay a landmark penalty of $90 million for what has been dubbed the largest case of illegal sackings in the country's history. Qantas outsourced more than 1,800 baggage handlers, cleaners and ground staff in 2020, in a move the Federal Court ruled was designed to curb union bargaining power in wage negotiations. The embattled airline's appeal to the High Court was unsuccessful, paving the way for the penalty to be awarded on Monday. The Federal Court judge cited the "sheer scale of the contraventions, being the largest of their type" as a reason to impose a penalty that would deter other businesses from similar conduct. He ordered Qantas to pay $90 million in penalties, $50 million of which is to be paid directly to the union that brought the proceedings and highlighted the illegal conduct. "To deprive someone of work illegally is to deprive someone of an aspect of their human dignity, and this is not assuaged simply by expressions of regret," Lee said. He was scathing about the embattled airline's conduct after the outsourcing, pointing to efforts to place a "less than candid" picture of the outsourcing decision before the court. He noted Qantas had apologised publicly but then had attempted to deny any compensation payments to the affected workers. Qantas will have to pay the hefty bill on top of a $120 million compensation payment it has made to the affected ground staff for their economic loss, pain and suffering following the outsourcing. However, Lee said he didn't have enough evidence to be convinced those payments would be made. The court was told the scandal-plagued airline began to finally accept responsibility for its actions in 2023, Lee noted, which coincided with the departure of former CEO Alan Joyce. The courtroom was packed with union members and representatives, who hugged and exchanged smiles after Justice Lee handed down his decision. It comes after Qantas also sold tickets to cancelled flights for several years, triggering more legal turmoil and a $100 million fine after it was sued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
