When is TDS deducted from bank FDs?
There are still some banks who continue to offer up to 8.8% interest rate on fixed deposits (FD) made by senior citizens (age 60 years and above) for three year tenure and not exceeding Rs 3 crore.Read below to know the list of banks offering FD interest rate up to 8.8%. Suryoday Small Finance Bank is offering 8.8% interest rate on FD of three year tenure. Utkarsh Small Finance Bank is offering 8.75% interest rate on FD for three year tenure for senior citizens.Source: Paisabazaar.com as of June 18, 2025Unity Small Finance Bank is offering up to 8.5% interest rate on FD for three year tenure.slice Small Finance Bank is offering 8.25% interest rate on FD for three year tenure.Similarly, Jana Small Finance Bank is offering 8.25% interest rate on FD for three year tenure.Disclaimer: While deposits in small finance banks are insured by the Deposit Insurance Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) up to Rs 5 lakh, experts advise investors to exercise caution when investing in their FDs. Given their unique business model, the risk associated with investing in small finance bank FDs might differ slightly from that of scheduled commercial banks. To mitigate potential risks, it's recommended that investors limit their exposure to small finance bank FDs to an amount that falls within the DICGC coverage. This ensures that their principal and interest are protected in unforeseen circumstances.TDS is required to be deducted by banks if the interest amount in an FD is above Rs 1 lakh in a particular bank. Do note that TDS is not any additional tax, you can get this tax back as a refund or adjust it with your total tax liability at the time of income tax return filing (ITR). Moreover, if you are eligible for a tax refund then you might be eligible for interest on tax refund. For instance, if a senior citizen's income is Rs 11 lakh then, it's not subject to income tax due to Section 87A tax rebate under the new tax regime for FY 2025-26. Section 87A tax rebate is available for up to Rs 12 lakh income level under the new tax regime. Moreover, a senior citizen can submit Form 15H to prevent TDS deduction if his total income after all deductions claim and Section 87A rebate is below the taxable limit like Rs 12 lakh for the new tax regime or Rs 5 lakh for the old tax regime.Despite the fact that no income tax is levied on such an income level (below Rs 12 lakh), banks and other financial institutions will still deduct TDS. This is because the law mandated them to deduct TDS once the interest/income amount crossed a particular threshold which was Rs 1 lakh for senior citizens. This happens because banks are not aware about tax liability and deduct TDS whenever the annual interest amount crosses Rs 1 lakh. So, can such a senior citizen file form 15H to avoid TDS on fixed deposits in such situations.

Refunds Dent Net Direct Tax Mopup
India's net direct tax collections declined 1.39% year-on-year to ₹4.58 lakh crore as of June 19 this fiscal, primarily due to a sharp 58% increase in refunds and muted growth in advance tax payments, official data showed. The figure includes ₹1.72 lakh crore from corporate tax and ₹2.72 lakh crore from personal income tax . India Inc's advance tax payments — a barometer of corporate performance and economic outlook — grew 4% year-on-year to ₹1.55 lakh crore. The rate of growth fell sharply from the year-ago period when advance tax collection grew 27% on-year to ₹1.48 lakh crore. Gross direct tax collections stood at ₹5.45 lakh crore, a 5% increase from the same period last year. However, the income tax department issued refunds of ₹86,385 crore until June 19, compared to ₹54,661 crore a year ago, pulling net collections down. 'The revised tax slabs and reduced personal tax rates that came into effect from April 1, 2025, have provided relief to salaried individuals, and this is naturally reflected in lower TDS collections,' said Samir Kanabar, tax partner at EY India. While higher volume of corporate tax refunds may weigh on short-term collection figures, it is also a sign of administrative efficiency, he said. A more balanced picture may emerge in the coming quarters, he added. Officials expect tax collections to catch up to meet the budget targets in the coming quarters even though global uncertainties amid US tariff threats and escalating Israel-Iran conflict may have some impact on corporate sentiments. 'We expect the collections to improve in the coming quarters as more people will file the returns,' a senior official told ET. The Centre has budgeted ₹25.2 lakh crore in net direct tax revenue for FY26, up from ₹22.3 lakh crore in FY25, when collections rose 13.6%, exceeding initial budgeted target. 'For a number of reasons, India finds itself in the position of strength amidst the ongoing global supply chain reset and, therefore, a turnaround in tax collections in next quarters could be quite likely,' said Sumit Singhania, partner at Deloitte India. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to engage with principal chief commissioners of the Income Tax Department next week to take stock of zone-wise collection trends and litigation management. The meeting will review age-wise pendency of appeals and push for faster disposal of legacy cases to reduce litigation burden, officials cited above said.

IITMS pilot signals fail to deliver promised results
1 2 3 4 5 6 Nagpur: The much-anticipated Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS) in Nagpur has failed to deliver the expected results. Although the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) initially announced the pilot's launch by June 15, it has now pushed the date further to June 25, following repeated glitches in system performance during test runs. As part of the pilot, the civic body installed new traffic signals and high-resolution cameras at 10 major junctions across the city to test the core features of the Rs 197-crore state-funded IITMS project. These junctions were equipped with modern signal systems, surveillance units, and electronic infrastructure meant to streamline traffic flow, monitor violations, and reduce congestion. "However, the early outcomes have been far from encouraging. The signals and surveillance network are not functioning reliably. After the hardware was installed, communication and coordination issues between the signals, control room, and field devices prevented the system from operating seamlessly," confirmed a senior NMC official privy to the development. NMC has formally communicated its dissatisfaction to the contractor responsible for the implementation. The city traffic police too have flagged multiple concerns, ranging from erratic signal synchronisation to system lags in transmitting real-time data to the control room. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo In response, the implementing company has been directed to address the technical shortcomings without further delay. The IITMS, once fully operational, is expected to offer multiple benefits — including adaptive traffic signalling, violation detection, real-time CCTV surveillance, and integration with the city police and NMC control rooms. The system's biggest promise lies in its ability to automatically detect violations such as red-light jumping, helmetless riding, and speeding, while also helping to manage peak-hour congestion. Despite these ambitious goals, the on-ground situation tells a different story. The pilot project, which should have been a showcase for smart traffic management, has instead become a point of concern for authorities already battling public criticism over rising violations and worsening traffic conditions. According to sources, the electric department has also raised concerns over technical integration and electricity supply stability, which are affecting signal performance. Meanwhile, messages and displays on the new signal poles have attracted public curiosity, but the system itself remains non-functional.
