Cambodia says the country had agreed to further talks in Malaysia at Thailland's request
PHNOM PENH (Bernama): Cambodia and Thailand will continue with mediation talks to resolve their border dispute at an upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) meeting scheduled to be held in Malaysia next week.
The GBC was part of a ceasefire agreement reached between the two countries at a special meeting in Putrajaya on July 28.
The GBC meeting was originally planned for August 4 in Phnom Penh. However, on Thursday, Thailand proposed Malaysia as a neutral venue and for the duration to be extended from one day to four.
Cambodia has agreed to Thailand's request, according to a report by Cambodian state media Agence Kampuchea Presse.
"Cambodia agrees to Thailand's proposal to meet GBC in Malaysia and proposes to have representatives of three countries: Malaysia, the United States of America, and China (to attend as observers),' said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Tea Seiha.
The minister has agreed to a proposed August 4 to 7 date for the GBC.
Tension between Thailand and Cambodia flared on July 24 with armed confrontations that resulted in the deaths of soldiers and civilians.
The fighting ceased at midnight on July 28 when the two nations agreed to the ceasefire at the request of Malaysia, the current Asean Chair.
At the heart of the dispute is an 817-kilometre undemarcated border, which has strained diplomatic ties between the countries for decades. - Bernama

Dozens of countries face steep levies under the tariff regime approved by Trump in Washington on Thursday, set to come into force in a week. He had originally threatened a swingeing 49% tariff on Cambodia as part of his 'Liberation Day' measures aimed at rebalancing world trade in America's favour, but cut it to 36% last month. 'This is the best news for the people and economy of Cambodia to continue to develop the country,' Prime Minister Hun Manet wrote on Facebook yesterday after the 19% levy was announced. The tariff announcement came days after Trump intervened to help broker a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia to end border clashes that left more than 40 people dead. Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol told reporters that Cambodia would 'zero out all tariff lines' for the United States – more than 11,000 in total. And he said a 'firm offer' had been made to buy 10 Boeing Max 8s for Air Cambodia, with an option to buy another 10. 'In addition, we'll buy whatever we can – medical equipment, agricultural products – from the United States too, as long as the price is competitive,' he said. Creative economy gets 13MP recognition
PUTRAJAYA: The orange economy is a developing sector that has the potential to contribute to Malaysia's economic growth, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil ( pic ). Fahmi, who is also the government spokesman, said the sector, which includes creative industries such as film, music and animation, was included in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) as a result of a proposal and engagement session between the Communications Ministry and the Economy Ministry. 'The engagement process has convinced the Economy Ministry that the orange economy is a developing sector, which has the potential to help economic growth,' he said at a post-Cabinet press conference here yesterday, Bernama reported. Meanwhile, Fahmi said the details of the specific benefits of the orange economy sector will be known when Budget 2026 is presented this October. During the tabling of the 13MP in Parliament on Thursday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government was committed to driving the growth of the creative economy through the high-potential digital creative industry. According to Anwar, the Matching Fund and Joint Production Fund will be implemented to encourage joint investments between the government and the private sector in the production of world-class content. 'The country's digital creative industry has generated income of RM6.3bil, with an export value of RM850mil,' he said.
