Nintendo Switch 2 Launches Globally Amid Huge Demand: Here's What's New
The Nintendo Switch 2 is selling out globally just a day after its launch. With over 2.2 million pre-orders in Japan alone, fans eagerly lined up at midnight events in Tokyo, New York, and Sydney to secure the console, marking an unprecedented level of demand in the gaming industry. Stock is flying off the shelves.
Enhanced Features and Higher Price Point
The Switch 2, priced at $449.99 in the US and 395.99 Pounds in the UK, boasts significant upgrades over its predecessor. It features a 7.9-inch LCD screen with 1080p resolution, supports up to 120 Hz refresh rates, and includes HDR capabilities. The console is powered by a custom Nvidia Tegra processor, offering improved performance and 4K output when docked. Additional enhancements include 256 GB of internal storage, redesigned Joy-Con controllers with magnetic attachment, and new social features like GameChat and GameShare.
Challenges and Market Response
Despite the higher price, demand for the Switch 2 remains strong. Analysts predict that Nintendo could sell 15 million units by March 2026. However, challenges such as US trade tariffs and convincing consumers to upgrade from the original Switch persist. Nintendo delayed U.S. pre-orders to assess tariff impacts but maintained the June 5 release date. The Switch 2's launch marks a significant moment for Nintendo, aiming to build on the success of the original Switch while navigating new market challenges. With its enhanced features and strong initial demand, the Switch 2 is poised to make a substantial impact in the gaming industry.
Nintendo Switch 2 launch games
The Nintendo Switch 2 launch boasts an impressive lineup of games, including Mario Kart, upgraded versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, and more. Other titles include Hades 2, Street Fighter 6, Sonic X Shadow Generations, and Yakuza 0. Civilisation VII and No Man's Sky also cut. Additionally, older Nintendo games like Wind Waker and F-Zero GX are available through the Switch Online GameCube library, with free performance updates for select titles. The Switch 2 Welcome Tour showcases the new hardware, making launch day a significant event.

Microsoft takes another swing at handhelds with new fullscreen Xbox experience, takes on Steam Deck and Switch 2
Microsoft is finally getting serious about handheld gaming. After years of experiments and half-baked ideas, the company is now working closely with Asus to deliver a handheld experience that feels a lot more like a console than a PC. The result? Two new devices — the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X — both designed around a new, fullscreen Xbox interface built for portable gameplay. These aren't just Windows PCs in a smaller form factor. Microsoft is stripping back the clutter, cutting unnecessary background tasks, and offering a streamlined UI that puts games front and centre. Basically, Microsoft wants to make gaming on Windows handhelds faster, cleaner, and more console-like, in a direct move to challenge the Steam Deck and Nintendo's recently released Switch ROG Xbox Ally models are powered by AMD's Z2 series chips. The standard version runs on the Ryzen Z2 A with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage, targeting 720p gameplay. The more powerful Ally X features the Z2 Extreme chip, with 24GB RAM and 1TB storage, aimed at 900p to 1080p gaming. Both have 7-inch 1080p 120Hz displays, support VRR, and now come with a dedicated Xbox button that ties into Microsoft's new new interface is what really sets this apart from previous handheld attempts. Instead of booting into the usual Windows desktop, these devices go straight into a fullscreen Xbox app. No taskbar, no wallpaper, no typical PC setup — just a clean, game-focused layout. Players can browse titles across multiple stores, like Xbox Game Pass, Steam, and Epic, all from one place. And the UI is built for controllers, making it much easier to use on the Microsoft says this is about more than just looks. By skipping the Windows desktop and trimming back background processes, the new Xbox experience saves around 2GB of memory, which goes straight back into improving game performance. There are also updates to the Xbox Game Bar, better multitasking features with controller-friendly navigation, and new tools to manage things like Wi-Fi and interface will first launch on the new ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X but will also roll out to existing ROG Ally handhelds later this year. Microsoft says it plans to expand the experience to more Windows handhelds in 2025, and it's even working on a 'verified for handheld' label — similar to Steam Deck's compatibility list — to help gamers know which titles are fully no word on pricing or availability yet, but one thing is certain: Microsoft is finally taking Windows handheld gaming pretty seriously. With that said, will it be able to sway users from the Steam Deck or Switch 2? That remains to be tuned to India Today Tech on all the latest about the ROG Xbox Ally models.

Microsoft unveils ROG Xbox Ally handheld video game devices
Microsoft on Sunday unveiled its first Xbox-branded handheld gaming devices, touting them as a way to play its vast library of titles anywhere. Two "ROG Xbox Ally" models made in a partnership with Taiwan-based ASUS will be available by the year-end holiday season, Xbox president Sarah Bond said during an online event showcasing games heading for the platform. "The Xbox Ally is an Xbox you can hold in your hands, bringing together the power of Xbox and the freedom of Windows," Bond said. "On this Xbox, you can play games across your entire library, including all the Windows PC game stores from Xbox and to Steam, GOG (Good Old Games platform) and Ubisoft Connect." The peek at Xbox Ally came just days after the release of Nintendo's Switch 2, the handheld console that could score record early sales for the Japanese "Super Mario" creator. The Nintendo device, which features a bigger screen and more processing power, is an upgrade to the Switch that became a global phenomenon with hit games such as "Animal Crossing." Microsoft promised to disclose pricing and release date details for Xbox Ally in the coming months. Both Xbox handhelds appeared similar to Microsoft console controllers in terms of buttons, toggles and grips but looked elongated to provide room for center screens. "When you power on your Xbox Ally, you'll boot directly into the Xbox full screen experience, a new feature optimized specifically for handheld gaming," Microsoft said in a release. "The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are perfect for players looking to take an approachable gaming experience with you during travels, whether it's between airports, or between the comfiest chairs in the living room."
