BREAKING: McNeese athletic director named to Landry's NIL taskforce
Governor Jeff Landry's office announced that the McNeese State Athletic Director has been appointed to serve on the Louisiana Governor's NIL Task Force Committee.
HR 15 of the 2025 Louisiana Legislature Regular Session established the task force to examine aspects of the name, image, and likeness (NIL) of student-athletes in Louisiana, according to a release put out Thursday.
'I applaud Governor Landry and his team for being proactive in forming this task force, and it's an honor to have been chosen to serve,' said Schroyer. 'NIL and revenue sharing have changed the landscape of college athletics, and things will continue to evolve. I'm looking forward to playing a role in developing future policy that keeps Louisiana leading the way in this space.'
Schroyer is one of 22 members appointed to the task force by Gov. Landry that includes state legislators, university athletic directors, student-athletes, compliance and Title IX coordinators, business leaders, and high school personnel.
The task force will meet once a month through December, except for November, and will submit a report of its findings and recommendations to the House Committee on Education by January 23, 2026.
Just 14 months ago, Schroyer, who has transformed the McNeese athletic department after COVID and the hurricanes of 2020, was named to the Division I Council and Men's Basketball Oversight Committee.
'It is important that we stay ahead of the curve on this as the landscape of college athletics continues to change,' Schroyer said. 'We want to take a look and see where we think this is all going and do what is best for the schools of our state to compete on the national level with other institutions. It is good for us to work together as a group on this.'

At the end of his playing days in the NBA, Belinell signed a three-year deal with Virtus Bologna, an Italian club team. Belinelli also played for the Italian national basketball team throughout his career. However, he did not participate in the 2024 Olympics. Belinelli's retirement was announced by the FIBA EuroBasket's X, formerly Twitter. Belinelli last played for the Spurs in 2020 when the season was cut short due to the COVID pandemic before the season resumed for 22 out of the 30 teams that were invited to the bubble near Walt Disney World in Orlando. After the Spurs were eliminated, Belinelli agreed to a three-year deal to play in Italy. However, the 2014 Spurs champion will be remembered for his role that led to an NBA championship. He averaged 11.4 points on 48.5% shooting, including 43% from deep, where he was a consistent threat from behind the arc. Belinelli averaged 9.7 points on 42.4% shooting, including 37.6% from three throughout his 13-year NBA career. Belinelli, the 18th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, spent 13 seasons in the NBA. He has played for the Golden State Warriors, the Toronto Raptors, the New Orleans Hornets, the Chicago Bulls, the Atlanta Hawks, and the Philadelphia 76ers, along with the Spurs. 2025-26 season predictions for the Spurs after schedule release While this year's San Antonio Spurs are far from championship contenders, such as the team champion Marco Belinelli played for, they've built an intriguing young core that's built for the future. Led by All-Star center Victor Wembanyama, 2025 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, and the second overall pick in this year's NBA draft, guard Dylan Harper, the Spurs could make a significant stride in 2025-26. Surrounding their young core with proven veterans such as point guard De'Aaron Fox, and a pair of veteran centers in Kelly Olynyk and Luke Kornet, the Spurs will look to build off of last season. The Spurs also inked Fox to a long-term extension for four years, worth $229 million. Pairing Fox with Wembanyama appears to be a focal point of the Spurs' future. After Wembanyama suffered blood clots, which ended his 2024-25 season, he didn't get many reps with Fox on the floor. Still, that didn't prevent the Spurs front office from making its long-term investment in Fox, which suggested the kind of direction the Spurs want to head in despite rostering two promising guards in Castle and Harper, who both play the same position as De'Aaron. Former Olympic champion Gable Steveson to make MMA debut at LFA 217

Steveson (0-0), a 2020 Olympic gold medalist in wrestling, will make his MMA debut against Braden Peterson (1-0) at LFA 217 on Sept. 12 from Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, Minn. The promotion announced the news Tuesday in a press release. Steveson's debut is a long time coming as the possibility of trying his hand at MMA has been discussed since winning his gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics (delayed until 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Instead of jumping straight into MMA, Steveson went the pro wrestling route and signed with WWE. His more than two-year stint with WWE ended in May 2024. Upon his release from WWE, Steveson, who'd never played football, was invited for an NFL tryout with the Buffalo Bills. Steveson got far into 2024 training camp but was cut as the team trimmed down to a final 53-man roster. Since then, Steveson has ramped up his MMA training. He spent time at Kill Cliff FC in Florida before he was invited by Jon Jones to help prepare the then-heavyweight champion for his title fight against Stipe Miocic last November at UFC 309. Steveson, 25, returned to compete in collegiate wrestling this year for the University of Minnesota. The two-time national champion, who'd won 73 consecutive matches, was denied a third title after he was shockingly upset on a last-second takedown by Oklahoma State's Wyatt Hendrickson. During a March appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" shortly after the loss, Steveson indicated a move to MMA was in his near future. He credited Jones for being a "great mentor" to him. "I've got a great mentor right now, I hope a lot of people know a guy named Jon Jones – just a fantastic dude and the greatest fighter of all time. He's pretty damn good," Steveson said. 'I appreciate his efforts of trying to lead me into the right direction and kind of taking my back and giving me the direction that I need. I'm really young, and he's been there and done that before, so I'm really appreciative of how he's kind of walked my steps leading into this next chapter, if that's what it is.'

Bears vs. Bills preseason matchup earns record TV ratings
Love him or hate him, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams certainly can draw a crowd. That was evident on Sunday night when the Bears welcomed the Buffalo Bills to town for a prime-time preseason matchup. The Bears easily defeated the Bills 38-0 in their first preseason shutout since 1994, but all eyes were tuned in to FOX to see what Williams would do in his first game under new head coach Ben Johnson. According to FOX Sports PR, Sunday night's game drew in 5.1 million viewers. It was the most-viewed preseason game since 2021, when they broadcasted the Hall of Fame game, the first preseason game in nearly two years due to COVID-19. Viewership was up 11% compared to last year's standalone preseason game between the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers. Even with the Bills sitting reigning MVP Josh Allen and the vast majority of their starters, this game was appointment viewing, with so many people curious as to how Williams would look in his first preseason action. The second-year quarterback delivered with an impressive outing, going 6-of-10 for 107 yards and a touchdown during the first quarter. TTime will tell whether Williams and the starters will see action on Friday night in their preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs. If this was it for Williams in the preseason, though, he made sure to shine in front of a large audience on national television.
