Memo issued to students agitating against restrictions on SSUS campus
The Students Federation of India (SFI) had launched a protest against the order issued by the varsity to ensure discipline on the campus and hostels. The student activists had staged a protest at the main gate, demanding that the curbs imposed on classrooms and hostels be withdrawn immediately.
According to the new rules, students will not be permitted to remain in classrooms after 5 p.m. Entry to hostels will not be allowed after 9.30 p.m. The absence of students from hostels after the deadline will be intimated to parents. The disciplinary rules were proposed by a sub-committee of the Syndicate led by K.S. Arunkumar, member of the Ernakulam district secretariat of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
A communication issued by the varsity on Wednesday alleged that the students' protest was launched without prior notice. They had obstructed the duty of security personnel by not permitting them to lock the gate at night. Hostel residents were allegedly asked to come out of hostels as a mark of protest against rules. The screening of a movie on the campus at night was also a serious violation of norms, it said.
The SFI unit committee had alleged that the restrictions that students should not remain in classrooms after 5 p.m. would affect their studies, especially for those pursuing dance and theatre courses.

The Opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) has finalised the seat-sharing arrangement 'amicably' for early seat-wise preparations in poll-bound Bihar, even as a formal announcement remains pending, people aware of the matter said on Thursday. The Congress and the Left parties won 19 and 16 seats. VIP, then part of the NDA, bagged four seats, but all its legislators switched over to the BJP. The people cited above said Sahni is said to have bargained hard for a better deal, but the INDIA bloc has not yielded due to the potential of a close fight. Last time, there was a vote difference of just 0.3% between the NDA and the INDIA bloc. With 37.9% vote share, the NDA got 125 seats in 2020. The Opposition bloc got 110 seats with 37.6% vote share. Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation had the highest strike rate of 63.15%. It won 12 of the 19 seats, followed by RJD (75 of the 148 seats) with a strike rate of 52.08%. The Congress had the lowest strike rate of 27.15%, winning 19 of the 70 seats. Social analyst NK Choudhary said that the 2025 election could be a repeat of 2020. 'That is what will keep both the alliances on tenterhooks. The INDIA bloc knows the value of each vote after getting so near and yet so far last time. It is treading cautiously, but the fight again will be intense and close this time.' He said the NDA is understandably under pressure due to factors such as anti-incumbency and a fall in chief minister Nitish Kumar's clout. 'The fight will remain close, and that is the reason why the Sahni factor assumes significance despite not being a big one in Bihar.' RJD spokesman Mrityunjay Tiwari said the mood in the state had boosted the confidence of the party workers, who see a bright prospect. 'The mood is for change, and that will happen,' he said. He said preparations were underway for joint and vigorous campaigning focused on core issues and exposing the NDA's failures. A joint manifesto of the INDIA bloc was being given a final shape. It is expected to focus on welfare measures as well as fundamental issues such as employment generation, a check on migration, and corruption.

Bharat Mata row: Kerala minister Bindu accuses Kerala University VC of misusing powers in registrar's suspension
The Kerala Higher Education Minister R. Bindu on Thursday alleged that the Kerala University Vice-chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal had misused his authority by suspending the Registrar K.S. Anil Kumar for his action, cancelling permission for a programme attended by Governor Rajendra Arlekar at the senate hall on June 25. 'Anil Kumar can continue in office as only the university syndicate has the right to take action against the registrar,' she told reporters. She also claimed that VC had gone beyond his powers in suspending the registrar. The minister said the registrar had not violated any rule by cancelling the programme for displaying a picture of 'Bharat Mata', which was a religious symbol used by the RSS, at the venue. Sivankutty also strongly criticised the VC, accusing him of "acting like a goon" of the Governor. The minister alleged that the practice of using Governors for challenging governments that did not get along with the Centre has become a custom only after the BJP assumed power.

Bharat Mata row: Kerala Raj Bhavan expresses displeasure over ‘security lapse' during SFI-DYFI marches
Raj Bhavan in Kerala has reportedly expressed its displeasure to the State Police over what it has described as a serious 'security lapse' during the SFI-DYFI marches taken out to Raj Bhavan on Wednesday (July 2, 2025) night. Raj Bhavan has also sought stern action against police officers responsible for the alleged lapse, sources said. The SFI and the DYFI staged marches to Raj Bhavan protesting against the suspension of Kerala University Registrar K.S. Anil Kumar over the Bharat Mata issue. The protests resulted in confrontation and clashes with the police. The police had used water cannons to disperse the demonstrators. The demonstrations had taken place less than 50 metres from the main gates of Raj Bhavan, where a heavy police presence had been deployed. On Wednesday, Vice-Chancellor in-charge Mohanan Kunnummal suspended Mr. Kumar in connection with the latter's action against the contentious display of the Bharat Mata image at an event attended by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at the university's Senate Hall. The Registrar has announced his decision to legally challenge the decision. Minister backs Registrar On Thursday, Minister for Higher Education R. Bindu came out in support of the Registrar, saying that the V-C 'had no power to take such an action' against the Registrar as per the laws and rules governing universities in Kerala. She termed it 'a misuse of power.'
