Kodungaiyur WTE plant: Mayor meets councillors
The meeting comes in the wake of a public gathering held on April 13 by the Federation of North Chennai Residents' Welfare Association, which announced a human chain protest on May 25.
During the meeting, councillors S Jeevan, R Jayaraman, J Dilli Babu, and M Renuka voiced objections, stating that the plant would pose public health risks. The councillors also suggested relocating the plant to an area having at least a 5km habitation-free radius. Sources part of the meeting said the corporation officials presented clarifications and risk mitigation measures in place, referring to the 'success' of a similar plant in Hyderabad.
While the councillors claimed the corporation is planning to take them on Wednesday and Thursday to Hyderabad to observe the operations, corporation officials said the visit will be decided only after consultation with the government.

Chennai to rent 587 pumps for Rs 43.79 crore for monsoons; opposition questions need despite new drains
CHENNAI: In the council meeting on Wednesday, the city corporation passed a resolution to procure 587 pumps for the monsoon this year at a cost of Rs 43.79 crore. However, councillors from the opposition parties questioned the readiness of the civic body's permanent infrastructure like stormwater drains and its continued dependence on motor pumps to drain out water, in the event of waterlogging. Of the 587 pumps, 150 are high-power 80-100 HP pumps, which the civic body will rent for Rs 3.38 lakh a month per pump (excluding diesel), for the monsoon period of 90 days from October to December. This will cost the city corporation a total of Rs 15.79 crore, which will also include charges for an operator per pump. The highest number of these pumps (20) is to be deployed in the Adyar zone, while Alandur has been allotted 15 of these pumps. Other flood-prone zones like Thiru Vi Ka Nagar will get 16 pumps; Manali and Valasaravakkam will get 11 each. Sholinganallur is to be allotted 14 pumps. So far, the corporation has been using pumps of capacities ranging from 5-50 HP, according to the resolution. While the size of these high-power pumps limits its portability, the corporation is also set to rent another 437 tractor-mounted pumps at a total cost of Rs 28 crore. The city corporation said that these pumps were necessary to be kept on stand-by in order to help faster draining out of water while AIADMK councillor J John questioned the officials' lack of confidence in the stormwater drains and asked, 'The corporation has claimed to have laid 2,000 kilometres of stormwater drains. Why are we still depending on motor pumps?' Mayor R Priya said that the pumps are intended to be used in cases of extreme weather events, like cyclones.

Privatisation only way to keep Chennai clean: GCC Mayor R Priya
CHENNAI: During the council meeting held at Ripon Building on Wednesday, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Mayor R Priya stated that privatisation of solid waste management is the only viable solution to keep the city clean. Her remarks came in response to a question from CPI councillor M Renuka, who raised concerns over Chennai's sharp fall in the Swachh Survekshan state rankings – from fifth last year to 104th this year. The mayor, however, assured the council that no sanitary worker would lose their job due to privatisation. She said comparisons to Indore, which consistently tops in the Swachh Survekshan rankings, were unfair due to differences in population size, adding that Mumbai would be a more fitting benchmark. Taking a dig at Left parties, Priya said, 'You (CPI and CPM) continue to oppose privatisation but expect cleanliness.' Councillor Renuka, however, pointed out that toilet maintenance remains poor despite privatisation. AIADMK councillor J John also opposed the privatisation move, urging the corporation to regularise workers hired under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM), as promised by Chief Minister MK Stalin during the 2021 elections. He pointed out disparities in pay, with NULM workers earning `23,000, while private workers earn only `15,000. Both John and Renuka also raised concerns over the shortage of teachers in corporation schools, especially for Tamil, social science, and physical education.

No penalty for TVK, says mayor
CHENNAI: While the TVK has said it will repair the public property damaged during Sunday's protest, including the broken steel railings along the road's centre median and plants that were destroyed, mayor R Priya on Monday said the civic body is prepared to carry out the repair works, or TVK can do it under the Namakku Naame scheme if needed. She added that no penalty is being imposed on the party for the damage. The mayor said this while addressing the media after inaugurating super-sucker machines for stormwater drain (SWD) desilting operations in Royapuram. She said, 'Any public gathering is respectable only when it takes place without causing damage to the public or public property.' The mayor also launched a crawler robot to inspect silt levels in SWD and verify silt removal with pre-and post-cleaning photos. The silt is collected using super sucker machines and transferred via pipes into closed dumpers to prevent spillage, then sent to Kodungaiyur and Perungudi.
