Man to spend decades in prison for murder at memorial event
Matthew Tanner, of Trenton, must serve 55 years and three months before he is eligible for parole, the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office said Tuesday.
Tanner was convicted of murder and weapons offenses in June following the August 2021 shooting death of Daquan Basnight, 30, in the 800 block of Stuyvesant Avenue on Aug. 1, 2021
The prosecutor's office said the case against Tanner was convincing due to his own words and the sharp eyes of a detective.
A gunman ambushed Basnight at about 12:20 a.m. following a party on the 800 block of Stuyvesant thrown by the family of Shakir Williams, a 17-year-old killed at a party in Hamilton in July 2013.
Williams' family lives on the block and the gathering is known as 'Sha Day.'
The city's gunfire detection system alerted officers to 13 shots being fired on the block and patrol officers arrived and found Basnight mortally wounded in the street, shot several times.
Detectives found security footage and watched as a shooter wearing all black emerged from a cut-through between homes on the south side of the block and fired on Basnight from behind, then ran back to the cut-through, which leads to Craft Alley.
Watching the footage, a prosecutor's Homicide Task Force detective found footage of Tanner walking in the direction of the shooting about seven minutes prior to the gunfire.
Authorities charged Tanner with Basnight's murder and on Aug. 3, 2021, he arrived at the prosecutor's office for processing and gave an interview to lead investigator Shawn Bruton.
The detective realized Tanner was wearing the same clothes as the night of the murder.
Moreover, Tanner identified himself in numerous screenshots from the surveillance footage before and after the shooting standing around the victim's body with a crowd of people. Tanner also identified himself standing next to Basnight's body three seconds after the last shot was fired,' the prosecutor's office said in a statement about the case.
The investigation and evidence trial showed Tanner left the party on Stuyvesant Avenue to shower and change his clothes at a nearby home. He then targeted Basnight as he walked away from the party – using the shortcuts between homes to approach Basnight from behind, then flee back to the area of the party, the prosecutor's office said.

As Travis Decker manhunt continues, DNA testing confirms he is sole suspect in murders of 3 daughters
While the search for a Washington father accused of killing his three young daughters in June continues, DNA testing has confirmed he is the only suspect in the murders, police said. Travis Decker's DNA was found on plastic bags that were found over the girls' heads as well as cable ties found near their bodies, according to the Washington State Crime Lab, the Chelan County Sheriff's Office said in a news release Monday. DNA matching 9-year-old Paityn, 8-year-old Evelyn and 5-year-old Olivia also was found on the bags, but no other profiles were detected, the sheriff's office said. No other DNA profiles were found on the cable ties, they said. "The completion of this DNA analysis provides additional evidence that indicates Travis Decker is the only suspect involved in committing these homicides," the news release said. The bodies of the girls and Decker's truck were found on June 2 near a campground in central Washington. Decker had not returned the girls to their mother on time after a planned visit and was not answering calls, she told police. A search for Decker, a former Army soldier, has been ongoing since then. "At this time, we do not have any evidence to suggest Travis Decker is either alive or deceased," the sheriff's office said Monday. Multiple photos and video of Decker prior to the murders have been shared by police, as well as renderings of how his appearance may have changed. A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to Decker's arrest. He should be considered armed and dangerous, officials said.

Teenager faces murder charge in deadly Henderson marijuana robbery
HENDERSON, Nev. (KLAS) — An 18-year-old faces charges including murder for the shooting death of a 19-year-old during what police suspect was a marijuana robbery gone wrong. John Mancuso is accused of killing Treyvon Jackson on July 22 at an apartment complex near Warm Springs Road and Green Valley Parkway. Jackson died from a gunshot wound to his torso, the coroner's office ruled. A witness first told police she and Jackson arrived at the complex to buy an electric bike, documents said. She told police that during the sale, a man wearing a ski mask jumped out from behind a car and shot Jackson. Through subsequent investigation, police determined the sale actually involved marijuana and possibly trading marijuana for a bike, documents said. '[The witness] knew that [Jackson] had made an agreement to sell the marijuana for $700, but she did not know if they were going to trade for the bike or if Treyvon would be receiving cash for the purchase,' police said. 'Treyvon had the marijuana stored inside [a] backpack, which, when located at the crime scene, was empty and there was no marijuana inside.' The witness later identified Jackson as a man she and Jackson met in the parking lot for the marijuana sale before the shooting, documents said. The FBI Criminal Apprehension Team arrested Mancuso on July 28, records said. In addition to open murder with a deadly weapon, Mancuso faces charges of robbery with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery. It was not immediately clear if police suspected there were outstanding individuals connected to the case. At the time of the release of their investigation press release, Henderson police said 'no suspects' were identified. Police did not issue a follow-up press release for Mancuso's arrest. Mancuso remained detained without bail at the Clark County Detention Center as of Monday. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Tuesday. The shooting marked Henderson's fourth homicide for 2025.
