Interviewing Ozzy Osbourne: ‘You can't live that way forever. It catches up with you eventually'
was a rock star for all seasons. The former Black Sabbath frontman, who has died aged 76, helped catalyse the new genre of heavy metal in the 1970s. But if the band raised a mighty din, Ozzy's antics on and off stage were more outrageous still.
He will forever be notorious for biting the head off a bat during a concert in Iowa in 1982 (he thought it was a rubber toy and required multiple rabies shots afterwards).

But away from the spotlight, he was equally committed to the cliche of the debauched rocker. He confessed to once nearly killing a man by chucking a television out a hotel window; on another drug-fuelled bender, he tried to shoot the 17 cats he kept at his home. He was found under the table, with a shotgun and knife, giggling furiously.
By his own admission, he was lucky to survive Black Sabbath's glory years. But just as the band were at the forefront of a new generation of headbanging rockers, so he would push boundaries all over again in the new medium of reality TV as the star of MTV's The Osbournes, which ran in its original incarnation in 2002-2005.

Starring Ozzy, his second wife and manager Sharon, and their children Jack and Kelly (another daughter Aimee refused to have anything to do with the series) the show portrayed the former enfant terrible as a lovable, if sweary man of a certain age, who spent his days padding around his vast Beverly Hills mansion, looking for the remote control and bickering with Sharon over whose turn it was to make the tea.
The Osbournes became a sensation and won Ozzy a new generation of fans for whom Black Sabbath and the dawn of heavy metal were ancient history.
However, it will be for his music that he will be chiefly remembered. Formed in Birmingham in 1968, Black Sabbath were founding fathers of heavy metal. Shaped by the industrial heritage of their hometown, tracks such as Paranoid and Iron Man chugged and roared like factory engines pushed to breaking point.

Their engine room was guitarist Tommy Iommi, who lost the tips of two fingers in a production line accident at the age of 17 – a mishap that contributed to the sludgy playing style that became a signature of Black Sabbath.
But if Iommi was the driving force, Ozzy was the charismatic face and voice of the band, his banshee-like shriek at once charismatic and disconcerting.

Their legacy was celebrated earlier this month with a farewell concert in Birmingham's Villa Park, where a frail Ozzy joined his bandmates on stage. 'You've no idea how I feel – thank you from the bottom of my heart,' he said on stage, at the end of an evening where fans including Metallica and Guns N' Roses had paid tribute.
His dark charisma was matched by a self-destructive streak as tumultuous as Sabbath's mighty riffs. Tiring of his constant drunkenness and unpredictability, his bandmates fired him in 1979 – though they would reunite in 1997 and play a farewell tour in 2016, going on stage in Dublin the same day Donald Trump was sworn in as president.
Osbourne drank and off through the intervening decades – when I interviewed him in 2014, he expressed regret about his hard-living.
'Until about five years ago, I was drunk all day, every day,' he said. 'I never really considered whether it made me a hard person to live with. Can you believe that?

'Then one day, a friend said to me 'does your wife drink?' I say 'yeah, she enjoys the occasional glass of wine'. And he said 'well, how would you feel if she polished off a bottle of vodka before breakfast – how long would you hang around?' And I thought 'not, bloody long'. So it shows how much she loved me that she stayed all that time with me.'

He also spoke with nostalgia but also a degree of horror about his days with Sabbath. 'We didn't really know what we were doing,' he said. 'It was all made up as we went along. I remember, with our first album, we recorded it on the way to the ferry.

'We had a bunch of songs and our manager rang us up and said would we mind calling by the studio before we went off to tour France. So we went in and someone turned on a mic and 'bam', the album came out. We didn't stop to think about things in those days.
'The thing is, you can't live that way forever. It catches up with you eventually. I'm glad I slowed down. I think back and recognise what a great life I've had.'

Viral £600 sliders are utterly plain & cost is daylight robbery but here's why everyone's dying to buy them
ANOTHER week, another trend to get our Primark knickers in an almighty twist about. This week, it's luxury fashion brand 4 Zoe Kravitz steps out in the £760 flip-flops Credit: Goff 4 The Row is the fashion powerhouse set up by US twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Credit: Getty In stark contrast to designer rivals like Hermes and Gucci, whose slip-ons are plastered with logos or distinctive shapes, The Row's pair are remarkably, utterly plain. They're a cartoon-like, bulky slip-on with an open toe (the sort you wear to shuffle in to take the bins out) that come in red, white and black, made from rubber. Yep, £600 for something so basic — that's roughly a couple's weekend in Ibiza. Yet, these plain sliders reportedly sold out at The Row's London store in just one day. READ MORE ON FASHION So why are the fashion crowd — me excluded — dying to get their mitts on them? We call this 'rage bait'. Silly money These expensive rubber sliders have gone viral precisely because people like us are enraged. Social media is awash with fury, dismay and bafflement over their exorbitant price for such plainness. Most read in Fabulous This hysteria is 'rage bait' in action: Driving engagement — comments, shares, views — and ultimately pushing furious shoppers straight to that click-to-buy button, generating huge revenue via their own outrage. It's a clever, yet simple, trap. Fashion followers, seeing 'everyone' discussing these shoes, foolishly believe owning a pair will make them a talking point or instantly cool. This isn't a fluke, it's a strategy and The Row — the fashion powerhouse set up by US twins Mary-Kate and Earlier this year, it released a plain red-soled flip-flop with a plain black strap for £670. They sold out not only for the brand, but through retailers like Net-A-Porter, snapped up by the likes of Kendall Jenner and It's the same formula. Simple, subtle — but silly money , all under the guise of 'quiet luxury'. The Row has now rocketed to sixth place on the Lyst Index of fashion's hottest brands — its highest-ever ranking. Searches for the brand are soaring, almost tripling in the past three months. And the Olsen twins aren't the only ones at it. In 2023, luxury brand Loewe mastered this trick when its plain, ribbed £325 cotton tank top (featuring just a tiny logo) became the Lyst Index's most searched item. This, too, was utter lunacy. Even if I won the Lottery, paying that much to do an impression of Onslow from Keeping Up Appearances isn't something I can ever buy into. The pricey shoes came 'pre-distressed', essentially dirty, yet carried that huge price tag. We journos were baffled but, despite the uproar, people snapped them up, and in the process ignited a trend for all things pre-distressed, from dirty jeans to Balenciaga's practically destroyed trainers, retailing at up to £1,290. Let's call it what it is: Daylight robbery. But the people with wallets fat enough to pay for these so-called luxury items are, well, mugs. In the case of the sliders, why pay £600 when you can get a Primark pair for a fiver? They are almost identical. For once, us normal folk are the real winners because we have the high street. Designer dupes have come on leaps and bounds in the past couple of years and now you can proudly look like a wally in your cheap rubber sandals as opposed to bankrupting yourself. Even if a vest is one of the most popular items, would you get one from Tu at Sainsbury's for less than the cost of a meal deal and a loaf of bread — or a designer one for £325? It's a no-brainer. Prestige fashion used to be about craftsmanship and quality, now it's about who can make the most outrageous item go viral. And people lap it up, not because it looks good, but because it's EVERYWHERE and yet unattainable to the rank and file. So while some brands keep pushing rage-bait items, aiming to drain our cash and sanity for likes, I say: Long live the high street. Its clever dupes offer identical style, no matter how wild, without costing a fortune.

Sharon Osbourne revealed her darkest secrets to me over beer at LA mansion… including tragic sacrifice she made for Ozzy
"BIRTHS, booze, drugs, bike accidents, cancer, burglary, you name it and we've got through it,' Sharon Osbourne told me candidly at her glamorous Hollywood home with Ozzy. It was emotionally fraught to Advertisement As she was helped back towards her black limo at Wednesday's funeral procession, she flashed the peace sign - husband Ozzy's trademark gesture. Having interviewed Sharon at the family's Beverly Hills mansion, I had witnessed first hand their enduring love. Back in 2005, Sharon invited me into their sumptuous Los Angeles home - where MTV reality show The Osbournes was filmed - to talk about her autobiography called Extreme. Ozzy - knowing it was his wife's gig - ambled around making fruit drinks for us then watched on from a polite distance. But he couldn't help interjecting with one-liners. Make no mistake, this was a double act. One Sharon - with a supreme, sharp-elbowed talent for showbiz management - had forged. Advertisement When she first started working with Ozzy in 1979 he was a washed up, drug-addled, alcoholic headbanger who'd been sacked as lead singer of heavy metal giants Black Sabbath. When I interviewed Ozzy three years earlier at their Buckinghamshire home, he'd admitted: 'I'd have beer for breakfast and work me way up. 'I would down four bottles of brandy a day, plus beer, wine, cocaine, pills and pot.' "When I first met my husband, I knew instantly that for the first time in my life, I was in love," she would later say on her chat show The Talk. Marriage sacrifice It would lead to marriage, three kids - and an almighty fall out with her father - self-anointed Godfather of Rock Don Arden, who was Sabbath's manager. It caused a rift with her father that would last more than 20 years before they patched it up. Back in 2005, Sharon told me with sadness in her voice: 'Don has never said he's proud of me. That hurts.' Dark presence Don - who died aged 81 in 2007 - had been a dark presence in her childhood that left deep psychological scars. 'There was nothing unusual in seeing my dad threatening someone or brandishing a firearm,' she said in a TV interview. Advertisement "My father really had a temper. He had a voice which could echo through the entire house. "A couple of times, he would whack me and he used to yank my hair. But I wouldn't say I was abused and beaten. In those days it was the normal thing." In adulthood Sharon had struggled with bulimia, telling me: 'Some people do drink and drugs but for me it's food, food, food. It's about having low self-esteem. When I first met my husband, I knew instantly that for the first time in my life, I was in love Sharon Osbourne 'I went through a stage where I loved my husband. I loved my kids, I had a great career and thought, 'What the f*** does it matter what I look like? Have another pint of ice cream, you deserve it'. 'But I was kidding myself. I wasn't well. I was so fat I couldn't get up the stairs. My son Jack used to have to push me up with one hand on each arse cheek while I yanked myself up with the rail. Then The Osbournes reality show - peppered with four-letter outbursts and family rows - turned her into a superstar in her own right. Toughest challenges In the meantime this indomitable woman survived colon cancer, having surgery the day before her 2002 20th wedding anniversary, followed by chemotherapy. That year Ozzy admitted to me that Sharon had been his saviour: "I have a great wife and five of the most beautiful kids in the world. As photographer Dave Hogan packed away his camera gear and I put away my notepad, Ozzy piped up: 'Fancy a beer?' Most celebrities can't get rid of journalists quick enough but Ozzy and Sharon were eager to chew the fat. Alcoholic Ozzy produced a four-pack from the fridge, and handed me one while sticking to soft drinks himself. I eagerly asked him about heavy rock yet he explained his real love was The Beatles. Advertisement As welcoming and down-to-earth a couple as you could wish to meet, Ozzy and Sharon were eager to hear about gossip from Britain. They were a hilarious double act and the fierce love between them was evident. That Ozzy became a national treasure was largely Sharon's doing.
