People Are Flying To This US State To Watch A Giant Pencil Get Sharpened

This 20-foot-tall No. 2 pencil was once a beloved 180-year-old oak tree. Now it's the star of a bizarrely wholesome ritual.
In the American state of Minnesota, a quiet residential neighbourhood transforms into a festival site once a year, but not for a concert or a parade. Instead, crowds gather to witness the sharpening of a giant pencil.
Yes, an actual 20-foot (6-metre) tall sculpture of a No. 2 pencil stands in the front yard of a Minneapolis home, and every June, it undergoes a ceremonial sharpening with a custom-built, oversized sharpener. The tradition has evolved into an annual community celebration, complete with music, costumes and attendees flying in from across the country, and even overseas.
'Some man is sharpening a pencil on his lawn and this is what happens? Yeah, I'm going to be part of it. How can you not? Life is too short," said Rachel Hyman, while speaking to the Associated Press. She flew in from Chicago dressed in a pencil costume after learning about the event from a friend.
From Fallen Tree to Cultural Icon
This unusually wholesome event began after a 2017 storm destroyed a beloved 180-year-old oak tree in the yard of John and Amy Higgins. Most would have mourned and moved on, but the couple saw an opportunity.

'We didn't want to do the typical carved bear or something rustic," Amy Higgins said while speaking to AP. 'We wanted something people could instantly connect to. Everyone knows a pencil."
'Why a pencil? Everybody uses a pencil," she added. 'Everybody knows a pencil. You see it in school, you see it in people's work, or drawings, everything. So, it's just so accessible to everybody, I think, and can easily mean something, and everyone can make what they want of it."
They commissioned Minnesota wood sculptor Curtis Ingvoldstad to transform the massive log into a giant version of a classic Trusty brand No. 2 pencil.
'People interpret this however they want to. They should. They should come to this and find whatever they want out of it," Ingvoldstad told the news agency. 'Whatever you want to bring, you know, it's you at the end of the day. And it's a good place. It's good to have pieces that do that for people."
Giant Sharpener, Real Crowd
To keep the pencil looking sharp (literally), Ingvoldstad also crafted a giant sharpener weighing nearly 100 pounds. It is hoisted with scaffolding, rotated around the pencil a few times, and shaves several inches from the tip, just like a regular sharpener would.
'It's about four feet large and weighs a hundred pounds," John Higgins said. 'We hoist that up and turn it around a few times and the pencil gets sharpened."
Over the years, the event has attracted increasing attention. What began with a few hundred neighbours now attracts thousands. Last weekend's event featured alphorn players from Switzerland and free purple pencils distributed in tribute to Minneapolis music legend Prince, on what would have been his 67th birthday.
What Happens When It Becomes a Stub?
Naturally, each sharpening reduces the pencil's height. Depending on the year, anywhere from 3 to 10 inches (8 to 25 cm) are carved off. But the Higgins's are not worried about the pencil's longevity.
'We don't have answers to that, and we're fine with that," John Higgins said. 'But for today, for this moment, we're going to take what we have and make the most of it."
For him, it's more than a gimmick, it's a reminder of hope, community, and creativity.
'We tell a story about the dull tip, and we're going to get sharp," he said. 'There's a renewal. We can write a new love letter, a thank-you note. We can write a maths problem, a to-do list. And that chance for renewal, that promise, people really seem to buy into and understand."
Ingvoldstad agrees. 'Like any ritual, you've got to sacrifice something. So we're sacrificing part of the monumentality of the pencil, so that we can give that to the audience that comes, and say, 'This is our offering to you, and in goodwill to all the things that you've done this year.'"

Donald Trump met with cheers and boos at ‘Les Misérables' debut amid Kennedy Center boycott & control row

President Donald Trump faced a mixed reception of cheers and boos as he attended the opening night of Les Misérables at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday, a visit marked by political overtones, a reported cast boycott, and rising tensions over his takeover of the iconic arts institution. When asked on the red carpet about the Kennedy Center performers who planned to walk out rather than perform in his presence, Trump dismissed the question sharply: 'I couldn't care less! Honestly, I couldn't. All I do is run the country well,' he said, before listing off what he described as his accomplishments. Melania Trump accompanied him at the event. CNN reported that about a dozen cast members were given the option to sit out the show and planned to do so, underscoring the ongoing friction between Trump and the arts community. The discord follows Trump's February move to install himself as chairman of the Kennedy Center, purge its board, and replace key figures with loyalists. He has also vowed to eliminate what he calls 'woke' programming, including events featuring drag performers. The performance of Les Misérables, a show centred on revolution and resistance to authoritarian rule seemed to mirror political divisions outside the theatre. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance joined the Trumps at the show, days after the president deployed troops to quell immigration-related protests in Los Angeles. 'We're going to have a safe country... Remember, if I wasn't there... Los Angeles would have been burning to the ground,' Trump said. Critics including California Governor Gavin Newsom slammed Trump's actions as 'dictatorial.' On social media platform X, Newsom reacted to Trump's musical appearance with the jab: 'Someone explain the plot to him.' Despite the controversy, Trump claimed to be a longtime fan of Les Misérables. 'I love the songs, I love the play,' he said in an interview last week. When asked which character he identified with, he deferred to Melania: 'That's a tough one... you better answer that one, honey.' Trump's control of the Kennedy Center has already sparked resignations from prominent figures like Shonda Rhimes and Ben Folds. The musical Hamilton canceled its run at the venue in protest, which Trump dismissed by saying he had 'never liked' the rap-based show. His influence has extended beyond the Kennedy Center to other cultural institutions like the Smithsonian and universities, in what critics see as a broad campaign to reshape American arts and education around conservative values.

Musical revolutionaries Sly Stone and Brian Wilson leave life's stage nearly simultaneously

Sometimes there are strange symmetries in death, as in life. The twin passings of Sly Stone and Brian Wilson this week brought that into sharp relief. Both were musical geniuses who paid a high price for their gifts. They burned bright, with art they created at their peaks that became more moving and meaningful with time, only to see their creative lights extinguished suddenly through mental health and addiction issues. Both were 82 when they died — Stone on Monday and Wilson on Wednesday. 'It's such an unsettling coincidence,' said Anthony DeCurtis, contributing editor at Rolling Stone. 'These two figures, they were very different and massively influential, and each ran into a wall of their own problems in many ways. As much as they achieved, it's hard not to think that they could have done more.' Brian Wilson captured the California sound With his late brothers Carl and Dennis, Beach Boys co-founder Wilson was the architect of the California sound that captured surfing and sun, beaches and girls. Yet for all the 'Fun, Fun, Fun,' there was something much deeper and darker in Brian's abilities as a composer. It was more than disposable music for teen-agers. He had an unparalleled melodic sense, hearing sounds in his mind that others couldn't. He could worm his way into your head and then break your heart with songs like 'In My Room' and 'God Only Knows.' The tour de force 'Good Vibrations' —- had anyone ever heard of the theremin before he employed its unearthly wail? — is a symphony both complex and easily accessible. 'He was our American Mozart,' musician Sean Ono Lennon wrote on social media. The 1966 album 'Pet Sounds' was a peak. Wilson felt a keen sense of competition with the Beatles. But they had three writers, including Sean's dad, John Lennon. Wilson was largely alone, and he heard impatience and doubt from other Beach Boys, whose music he provided. He felt the pressure in trying to follow up 'Pet Sounds,' and 'Smile' became music's most famous unfinished album. Wilson, a damaged soul to begin with because of an abusive father, never reached the heights again. He descended into a well-chronicled period of darkness. Sly Stone helped assemble a new kind of musical landscape
