Tamil Nadu to roll out high-speed internet for rural households under 'BharatNet' scheme
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government is set to launch an ambitious initiative to provide
high-speed internet
access to all rural households in the state, targeting one crore homes per year.
The scheme is being implemented under the Central government's '
BharatNet
' project, aimed at bridging the
digital divide
across rural India.
In Tamil Nadu, the project is spearheaded by the
Tamil Nadu FiberNet Corporation
Ltd (
TANFINET
). High-speed internet connectivity through
optical fibre cables
is being established in 12,525 gram panchayats across the state.
The groundwork began in 2018 and has now reached its final phase. So far, optical fibre cables have been laid over a distance of nearly 55,000 kilometres, covering 11,800 villages.
Some delays were encountered in certain locations, particularly in forest regions, due to challenges in obtaining clearances and executing cable-laying operations. However, the government has announced that all pending work is expected to be completed by next month.
Currently, notices inviting applications for internet service providers in around 4,000 villages have been published on the official TANFINET website.
Similar notices for an additional 4,000 villages are set to be released in the coming days, with the remainder to follow soon after. The rollout of actual internet connections is scheduled to begin next month. The government has set a bold target of connecting one crore rural households with high-speed internet within this year.
To ensure affordability and wide adoption, internet plans are being tailored to meet both household and business needs. For homes, unlimited internet at 20 Mbps will be offered at a base price of Rs 199 per month. Higher-tier plans of Rs 399 and Rs 499 will provide increased speeds. For businesses, two initial plans are available, Rs 899 and Rs 1,199, with enhanced bandwidth.
Officials have noted that all plans are subject to change based on government discretion and consumer demand. With this digital push, Tamil Nadu aims to enhance

The PM SVANidhi scheme, which started off as a micro-credit scheme during the Covid-19 pandemic, to help the street vendors and small businesses survive and sustain their ventures in trying times, has another side to it. Many beneficiaries, who got funds under this scheme, utilised it to build lasting enterprises, and many of them went on to create success stories worth emulating. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 1, 2020, the micro-credit facility scheme proved to be a boon for thousands of street vendors and small businesses in improving their livelihood. As the scheme completes five years on Sunday (June 1), many beneficiaries pan-India shared their story of transformation with IANS while extending their gratitude to the Modi government. In Bihar's Bhagalpur, more than 4,000 beneficiaries have availed the benefits of the scheme. It has opened new doors for poor and unemployed youth in the district. Today, there are around 1,200 street vendors who have taken a loan of up to Rs 20,000 and are doing business. Some shopkeepers, namely Sujit Sinha, Arbind Das and Ganesh Gupta, who benefited from the scheme, expressed their deep gratitude to PM Modi. Deputy Mayor of Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation, Salauddin Ahsan, informed that close to two dozen people got a loan of up to Rs 50,000 under the scheme. Under this scheme, a loan up to Rs 10,000 is provided in the first phase, Rs 20,000 in the second phase and Rs 50,000 in the third phase. After repaying one loan, traders can avail of the next phase of the loan. In Uttar Pradesh's Chandauli district, local retailers said that this scheme has helped them a lot in expanding their business. In Chhattisgarh's Bemetra district, Chaileshwar Verma, who got a loan of Rs 10,000 under the scheme, restarted his fruit shop. Today, he has become self-reliant. 'I got a loan of Rs 10,000 from this scheme, with which I restarted my shop. Now my shop is running well. I have become self-employed,' he said. Kawardha, another district of Chhattisgarh, also boasts of the scheme's success as many small businessmen and street vendors saw their business propped by the Central government's assistance under the PM-SVANidhi scheme. Vikas Devangan and Narendra Kumar, the residents of Pandaria Municipality in Kabirdham district, received two instalments of Rs 20,000 under the scheme, which helped them restart their tea and grocery shop, respectively. In Karnataka's Tumkur district, a couple of women street vendors shared their story of despair during Covid and also explained how the scheme helped them cross past all challenges. Lalita, a beneficiary, recalled the financial difficulties during Covid and how local lenders denied loans. She was unable to secure funds from the local bank, also. PM SVANidhi scheme came to her rescue as she was sanctioned a loan of Rs 10,000. She successfully repaid the amount by selling fruits and vegetables on the streets. She thanks the government for stabilising her livelihood during tough times. Radha, a flower vendor, found it hard to sustain her business during Covid times. Under the PM SVANidhi scheme, she got a loan of Rs 10,000, which helped her improve her flower-selling business and gain financial stability. After successfully repaying the first loan, she secured another loan of Rs 20,000, which helped cover rent and also support her children's education. Jayamma, a vegetable vendor in Tumkur, shared her story of finding stability because of the PM SVANidhi scheme, saying, 'Before availing this scheme, I had to struggle with high interest as private loans made it difficult to sustain our business. She expressed her gratitude to the Centre, saying that the scheme has brought a significant difference in her ability to support herself and her family. The scheme launched during the Covid-19 pandemic on June 1, 2020, provides collateral-free loans up to Rs 50,000 for eligible street vendors in incremental tranches. It provides loans in three tranches: 1st tranche of Rs 10,000, 2nd tranche of Rs 20,000, subject to repayment of the 1st tranche, and 3rd tranche of Rs 50,000 upon repayment of the second loan.

Electric bus operations set to boost public transport in Puducherry
With six electric buses arriving in Puducherry last month and 19 more expected by July-end, public transport is likely to get a boost. These buses will likely make the city cleaner and greener. Puducherry is late in buying electric buses, compared with the other Southern States. The measure is aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the government-owned Puducherry Road Transport Corporation (PRTC), and its full transition to electric buses for its operations in urban and mofussil areas by the year-end. The Puducherry government will operate these buses under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles in India (FAME-II) Scheme of the Union government. Gross cost contract 'The 25 buses (10 AC and 15 non-AC) are 9-metre vehicles. They will be run on the gross cost contract in the public-private partnership mode. The ₹23-crore seed funding from the Smart City project will be used for the Behind the Meter (BTM) facility, and a major portion of the sum will paid on a per kilometre basis. The buses will ply on 15 tentative routes within urban areas. They will be operated on a viability gap funding model,' says Transport Commissioner A.S. Sivakumar. The charging infrastructure is being readied by Evey Trans Private Limited, a subsidiary of Olectra Greentech, on a 25,000-square foot site belonging to the Puducherry government on Maraimalai Adigal Salai. Official sources say the operator has to bear the cost of hiring drivers, electricity, and maintenance for 12 years. With a single charge, a bus can run up to 200 km. It takes around six hours to charge a bus. The battery-operated buses have a life of 6-7 years. Demand sent to the Centre While the 25 electric buses will ply on designated routes in the urban areas, the Puducherry government has planned to procure 75 more buses under the PM-ebus Sewa scheme. It has submitted the demand to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). According to an official, 'Puducherry plans to run 50 buses on inter-city as well as mofussil routes and the rest on the existing urban routes. Of the 75 AC buses, 50 will be 12 metres long. They will be deployed on inter-city routes. The rest of the buses (9 metres) will be deployed in urban areas.' The official adds, 'States or cities will be responsible for running the bus services and paying the operators. The Central government will support the bus operations by giving subsidies to the extent specified in the scheme.' Under the scheme, the Central government will provide ₹24 per km for a bus deployed on inter-city routes and mofussil routes and ₹23 per km for a bus in urban areas. The Puducherry administration will bear the rest.

Delhi govt to provide subsidies to promote e-vehicles, says CM Gupta
New Delhi: Delhi government will provide subsidies to people to promote electric vehicle adoption in Delhi in its new policy, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Saturday. Delivering a valedictory address at Aironomics, 2025 convention, she highlighted Delhi government's different initiatives to combat air pollution. Transformation of all the vehicles, including private ones, into electric vehicles (EVs) is a big vision for which Delhi government is coming up with a new EV policy, she said. "We will urge people to purchase electric vehicles for which they will be provided subsidies," she said. Gupta also said that air pollution is a year long problem that required sustained efforts for which her government is hiring 1000 water sprinklers to be used to combat dust on the roads through out the year. "In view of traffic, these sprinklers will operate in early morning and late night hours so that no congestion is there on the roads," she said. Further, the government is also deploying integrated machines across 70 Assembly constituencies in Delhi that will perform the task of mechanical sweeping of the roads, water sprinkling and litter collection, she said. She urged the gathering to join the mission to ensure a clean green Delhi by contributing to government's initiatives to check biomass burning , expanding green cover cover and EV adoption. Former New and Renewable Energy Secretary Bhupinder Bhalla speaking on air quality in the capital said that the Central government and Delhi government need to align their efforts to check pollution in the city. According to a statement, several panelists discussed, 'Turning the Tide: Delhi's moment to lead on clean air' session held under the broader Aironomics 2025 convention, hosted by the Bharat Climate Forum (BCF), Dalberg Advisors and the Council for International Economic Understanding (CIEU). "Earlier one would say not much is happening, but now there's momentum. Now there are two common governments with a common agenda in Delhi. Now even the local bodies are also on the same page. Therefore, anything that is decided will be implemented by everyone and at a much faster pace," Bhalla told PTI. Also speaking at the session, Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) Chairman Sanjiv Kumar spoke about the need for cost-efficient, real-time pollution monitoring systems. "We want to improve efficiency so that we can do more coverage and find better solutions. If we can identify whether a plant in a particular location is causing a surge, we'll be able to intervene more effectively," he said. The summit also launched Phase 2 of the Air Quality Action Forum (AQAF), jointly announced by Paytm Foundation and UNEP. The platform will support cities and innovators with tools, data, and financing models to scale local clean air solutions, added the statement.
