Reading the stars: Understanding the real role of astrology

India Today07-06-2025
Astrology is often perceived as a tool for predicting the future, but its true essence goes far beyond that. In the Vedic tradition, astrology is regarded as a profound spiritual science rooted in the ancient Vedas. With over three decades of experience in the field, Pt. Umesh Chandra Pant emphasises that astrology is not merely about forecasting events—it serves as a guide to understanding one's karma, life patterns, and spiritual journey. This article explores the deeper purpose of astrology, highlighting its role in self-awareness, alignment, and personal growth.advertisementThe previous article, 'The Power of Astrology', gives a five-part overview of how Jyotish is a life-changing tool. In this feature, let us explore the real purpose of astrology from the Vedic and Upanishadic lens, showing how it helps us connect to cosmic order and inner truth."Yadaa Deveshu Karmani pravartate, tadaa sarvam sukham bhavati."
Upanishads(When actions align with divine forces, life becomes joyful.)Through the sacred science of Jyotish, we can decode our karmic patterns, understand life's timing, and evolve with greater clarity.VEDIC ASTROLOGY FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH: A VEDANGA ROLE EXPLAINEDAstrology, or Jyotish Shastra, is one of the six Vedangas, the auxiliary limbs of the Vedas. The ancient seers declared:"Jyotisham Vedanaam Chakshuh"(Astrology is the Eye of the Vedas)This phrase beautifully conveys the meaning of 'Jyotisham Vedanaam Chakshuh' astrology offers spiritual vision. Just as eyes guide us in the physical world, Jyotish guides us through the karmic and cosmic realms, helping us live in tune with dharma and divine will.advertisementThus, Vedic astrology for spiritual growth is not superstition, it is a discipline that awakens consciousness and aligns us with higher truth.ASTROLOGY IN VEDAS AND VEDANGAS: DIVINE COSMIC ORDERVedic astrology is embedded in ancient scriptures like the Rigveda, Atharvaveda, and Puranas. The planetary system is seen as a reflection of divine intelligence. Each graha (planet) is not just an astronomical object but a conscious force representing a deity and psychological trait:Surya (Sun) – Soul, truth, authorityChandra (Moon) – Mind, intuition, emotionBudha (Mercury) – Intelligence, logic, speechShukra (Venus) – Love, harmony, wealthMangala (Mars) – Energy, drive, courageGuru (Jupiter) – Dharma, expansion, wisdomShani (Saturn) – Karma, patience, disciplineRahu and Ketu – Shadow forces, illusion, past-life karmaThe Bhagavad Gita also reinforces this principle, stating that action depends on factors like time, body, and consciousness. Astrology "decodes" the unique energies and influences of celestial bodies (planets, signs, houses) on human lives, offering insights into personality, relationships, and potential life events.PRACTICAL USE OF JYOTISH IN MODERN LIFE: BEYOND SUPERSTITIONSo, is astrology more than predictions? Yes, and its relevance today is stronger than ever. Here are some practical uses of Jyotish in modern life:Career Astrology – Identify favorable fields and growth cyclesadvertisementMarriage Compatibility – Match charts to ensure emotional harmonyHealth Astrology – Understand health vulnerabilities based on planetary doshasFinance and Property – Analyze timing of gains, investments, and inheritanceSpiritual Progress – Guide meditative practices based on planets like Jupiter and KetuAstrology enables conscious decisions aligned with cosmic timing (Dasha, Gochar or transit), reducing confusion and empowering action. How Astrology Helps in Self-Realization: One of the noblest purposes of astrology is to guide us toward self-realization. Through Jyotish, we can recognize our Svabhava (inherent nature) and Svadharma (life purpose). The natal chart becomes a karmic blueprint that reveals strengths, weaknesses, past debts, and future opportunities.By observing planetary placements, transits, and yogas, astrology helps us understand:Why specific patterns repeat in lifeWhat karmic lessons are we meant to learn?Which remedies or changes bring spiritual growth? In this way, astrology is not merely predictive, it is transformative and reflective, bringing us closer to our inner truth.Difference Between Astrology and Superstitio: Pt. Umesh Chandra Pant says" I've often emphasized the importance of distinguishing between genuine Jyotish and blind superstition. Vedic astrology is rooted in logic, timing, karma, and remedy, not fear-based beliefs".advertisement'Graha yatha karma' – Planets reflect your karmas; they do not dictate your fate arbitrarily. While superstition promotes helplessness, astrology encourages empowerment. Vedic remedies like mantra chanting, Rudraksha wearing, gemstone wearing, daan (charity), and puja are not magical cures, they are energy-balancing disciplines that work alongside effort (Purushartha). What Is the Real Purpose of Astrology? The real purpose of astrology is not to induce fear or passive waiting, it is to guide, awaken, and liberate. As one of the six Vedangas (They are: Shiksha (phonetics), Kalpa (rituals), Vyakarana (Sanskrit grammar), Nirukta (etymology), Chhanda (Vedic meter), and Jyotisha (astronomy for auspicious timings), Jyotish connects human consciousness to divine rhythm. It helps us live with awareness of karma, fulfill dharma, and walk the path to moksha.Astrology, when practiced as per Vedic principles, becomes:A spiritual compassA map of karmic evolutionA mirror for soul transformationLet us remember, astrology is more than predictions. It is a light for those walking the path of wisdom and a sacred mirror for those seeking purpose."""Let Jyotish, the eye of the Vedas, guide you toward inner clarity and divine timing" says Pant.Astrology is more than predictions, it is a Vedic science that aligns human actions with divine timing and deeper karmic understanding.advertisementVedic astrology plays a vital role in self-realization, helping individuals uncover their life's purpose, karmic patterns, and spiritual path.Pt. Umesh Chandra Pant, in this article, explains how Jyotish as one of the six Vedangas serves as a guiding light for conscious and dharmic living.Must Watch

Dasara festival preparations begin at Indrakeeladri temple

Preparations are in full swing for the grand Dasara Mahotsavams to be held from September 22 to October 2 at the famous Sri Durga Malleswara Swamyvarla Devasthanam on Indrakeeladri. Endowments Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy chaired a review meeting at the Jammidoddi Meeting Hall in One Town, Vijayawada. He emphasised that this year the festival should surpass previous years in grandeur, in line with Chief Minister's instructions to make the celebrations prestigious. He announced free laddu prasadam would be distributed to all devotees on Moola Nakshatram and Vijaya Dasami days. He said: 'Every department must ensure spiritual readiness with focus on easy access to drinking water, and annaprasadam. Ordinary devotees must receive top priority in darshan arrangements.' He also directed that Prakasam Barrage and the temple surroundings be illuminated beautifully, and stressed the importance of well-organised Vedic rituals, to be led by priests, the Vedic committee, and the chief archakas. He added that Krishna Harati during Dasara should be conducted with grandeur. Vijayawada (East) MLA Y. What Role Do the Navagrahas Play in Shaping Your Life According to Vedic Astrology?

I depict the nine Navagrahas, each with unique symbols, radiating cosmic energy within a swirling nebula. Their distinct attributes and powers are highlighted. In Vedic astrology, the nine planets, or Navagrahas , are the core forces that shape a person's life and destiny. These celestial bodies are considered agents of divine cosmic will, each holding a unique energy and a specific purpose. Understanding their roles is fundamental to interpreting a Vedic birth chart. The traditional seven planets are the Sun (Surya), which represents the soul, ego, and authority. The Moon (Chandra) governs the mind, emotions, and intuition. Mars (Mangal) is the planet of energy, ambition, and aggression. Mercury (Budha) is the communicator, ruling intellect and speech. Jupiter (Guru) is the great benefic, signifying wisdom, expansion, and fortune. Venus (Shukra) rules love, relationships, and material pleasure. And Saturn (Shani) is the planet of discipline, karma, and responsibility, teaching life's hardest lessons. In addition to these, Vedic astrology includes two shadow planets, Rahu and Ketu , which are not physical but are points of immense power. Rahu, the North Node, is the head of a serpent, representing our worldly desires, ambitions, and obsessions. It pushes us toward new experiences and is linked to our future karma. Ketu, the South Node, is the headless tail, symbolizing detachment, spirituality, and our past-life mastery. It pulls us away from material attachments and guides us toward spiritual liberation. Together, the Navagrahas form a complex web of influences that create a person's unique life experience, balancing inner motivations with outer actions and shaping their entire destiny. Green Mission links India's heritage with future

Moodbidri: Marking India's 79th Independence Day celebrated recently with a message rooted in heritage and sustainability, the Oppiko Pachchevanasiri Abhiyan (Accept the Greenery Movement) organized a mass distribution of 6,241 saplings, seeds, and buds across select districts. The initiative, led jointly by Swasti Sri Bhattaraka Charukeerthi Jain Math, Alva's Education Foundation, and the Oriental Research Centre, Udupi, underscored the fusion of cultural tradition and ecological responsibility. Seventy-nine participants also took 'green pledges,' symbolising a long-term commitment to nurturing trees. Among the saplings were fruit-bearing trees and the endangered Talipot Palm (Corypha umbraculifera) — once central to India's civilizational legacy as palm leaves preserved Vedas, Upanishads, and epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Swasti Sri Charukeerthi Bhattaraka and Managing Trustee of Alva's Education Foundation, Vivek Alva emphasised that protecting biodiversity and reviving rainforests is a sacred duty aligned with national values of sustainability. Professor S.A. Krishnaiah, campaign founder, revealed that under the Green India Vision Ecological Studies (GIVES) initiative, over 1.3 lakh seeds and saplings have already been distributed, with plans to expand globally. This year's celebration also unveiled 'Bio-Trove,' a unique seed-collection model enabling steady replantation. Nearly 1,100 seeds were pooled and redistributed on Independence Day. Inspired by a 12th-century Jain inscription at Hirebevinur, the movement has grown into a national mission, blending India's ancient eco-wisdom with a modern vision of sustainable living.
