Scottish TikToker to do 'biggest challenge yet' after meeting hero
Kieran Taylor will embark on a 56-mile-long cycle next month to raise funds for Maggie's, a cancer charity, despite never having ridden on the roads before. The 25-year-old from Airdrie is taking part in the Tour de 4 and revealed that his motivation to complete the cycling challenge was sparked when he met Sir Chris Hoy earlier this year. Kieran training for the event (Image: Kieran Taylor) Kieran commented: 'I met him in March at 'An Evening with Sir Chris Hoy' in Glasgow. I told him he inspired me to start my sports journey, and he was very interested in what I was doing. 'Throughout the evening he was talking about the Tour de 4 and I just thought 'I'll do it'. There are four different routes, and me, being a guy up for a challenge, I said I was going to take on the toughest one of them all, the 56-mile-long ride. 'It's amazing, he's managed to organise an event to change perceptions around cancer. To cycle with the guy I look up to, who inspired me to do sport in the first place, is awesome. 'He's a hero. I want to put 110 per cent into this. The pain I will experience in the weeks before and after the challenge is nothing compared to what anyone with cancer is going through.' READ NEXT: Still Game legend revealed thoughts on film rumours The Tour de 4 is a cycling event created by Sir Chris Hoy following his diagnosis with Stage 4 prostate cancer in September 2023. It is being held to show that whilst devastating, a Stage 4 diagnosis 'doesn't define the limits of what's possible'. There are four different rides that participants can take part in. The red ride – which Kieran is undertaking – spanning 56 miles, the blue ride totalling just under 38 miles, the green ride which is a family route of one kilometre, and the yellow ride which is completed on static bikes. Kieran explained that not only is he excited to be riding alongside his hero, but he is looking forward to raising awareness of the work carried out by Maggie's. Kieran at Maggie's Centre in Glasgow (Image: Kieran Taylor) The charity, which has a base at Gartnavel General Hospital in Glasgow's West End, provides vital care to people diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones. Kieran told the Glasgow Times that Maggie's supported him through a difficult time, and he has now launched a GoFundMe page to raise funds to support them. It has so far raised £95. Kieran added: 'A lot of my family members have had cancer over the years. Maggie's helped me with a lot of that. 'They are a well-known charity, but I don't think everyone understands what they actually do. People might not know how far their support goes; it's incredible. 'They provide counselling, massages, a café which lets patients socialise, and they do stuff for people like me who have additional support needs. 'I've done plenty of sponsored walks, runs, and half marathons, but this is the biggest fight I've had to put my body through mentally and physically.' Over the past few weeks, he says he has upped his training and has been scouting out the route in preparation. Parts of his journey have been documented on his TikTok account. He said: 'My training started very light with me going to the gym. The staff have been helping me make sure I can get the best time possible. 'I've upped my training to do some running, and I'm going out to do a scout of the route so I can get a good idea of the braking points and gear changes. 'I've never done road cycling before. Lovell charity golf days raises £150k for Welsh charities
Lovell's 30th annual charity golf day, held at Whitchurch Golf Club in Cardiff, raised £14,550 for three Welsh charities: Llamau, Maggie's, and Young Lives vs Cancer Cymru. This brings the total raised over 30 years to £151,550. Gemma Clissett, regional partnerships director at Lovell, said: "This golf day is particularly special as the 30th one we've hosted, and I'd like to thank everyone who took part for helping us raise such a fantastic amount for Llamau, Maggie's and Young Lives vs Cancer Cymru. "To have raised over £151,550 at our golf days over the last three decades is a huge accomplishment and something we are incredibly proud of." Denise Kennedy, corporate partnership manager at Llamau, said: "Congratulations to Lovell on their 30th charity golf day. "Thank you to the Lovell team and all the golfers and supporting companies that have taken part and raised funds this year to benefit the chosen charities." The event saw 26 teams compete, followed by a charity auction hosted by Welsh actor and writer Steve Speirs.

'Summer Santa' is encouraging people to zip slide the Clyde
Danny King, known for dressing up as Father Christmas to raise money at events across Lanarkshire, is now hoping to drum up support for the Zip Slide the Clyde event. The 63-year-old is a proud advocate for the Maggie's centre in Lanarkshire. He said: "They are helpful to those who are going through a cancer journey, and you are made to feel part of the wider Maggie's family. "As soon as you enter, you are met with kind people who go out of their way to support, comfort, and direct you to the appropriate help that you require." Maggie's Lanarkshire building (Image: Supplied) The Summer Santa, so named by centre fundraising organiser, Kerry-Anne Lang, previously took part in a Zip Slide event when he was just 16 years old, and said he "really enjoyed it". Read more: Thrilling zip slide event will see participants fly across Glasgow's River Clyde Now, the Wishaw native is advising anyone who is considering taking part to "go for it, it's for a great cause.' The event on Saturday, August 30, will see people zip slide from the top of the Riverside Museum to raise cash for Maggie's cancer charity. Those looking to take part can sign up online here: Other participants at this year's event include Eve Esteban, who said Maggie's Lanarkshire was a "lifeline" after her cancer diagnosis. She said: "Since my diagnosis, Maggie's has offered support in a number of ways. "I have taken part in yoga and relaxation classes, and I attend groups which offer support that I don't think I would access anywhere else. "As soon as I enter the centre, I feel a weight lift off my shoulders as I know I will be offered support and can share my true feelings of what it's like living with cancer. 'Unfortunately, cancer affects so many people now, and the more we can do to get the word out about Maggie's resources, the better. " Centre visitor Laura McCourt, from South Lanarkshire, will also take part in the challenge despite her fear of heights. She will take part in honour of her mum, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer in August 2024. "But when I saw the call for Zip Slide volunteers, I knew it was the perfect way to say a huge 'thank you' to Maggie's for the incredible support they've given me. "Maggie's isn't just a building; it's a haven. "A place where the kettle's always on and you're met with warmth, not judgement. "You don't need an appointment. "You just walk in, and someone's there." Danny, Eve, and Laura have all emphasised the importance of taking part in Maggie's events in order to support more people who are living with cancer. Lorrie Cameron, centre head at Maggie's Lanarkshire, said: "Maggie's relies entirely on voluntary donations from individuals and the local community to enable our professional team to provide specialist cancer support, psychological support and benefits advice for everyone who needs it."
