Phoenix land Nigerian striker Eze to replace Barbarouses
Photo: PHOTOSPORT The Wellington Phoenix have replaced accomplished striker Kosta Barbarouses with a Nigerian marksman for the next A-league season. Ifeanyi Eze, 26, will lead the attack, coming off a productive season in the Iraq Stars League, where scored 15 goals for 14th-placed Al-Karkh SC. Phoenix head coach Giancarlo Italiano hailed Eze's signing. "He has all of the attributes I was looking for in an attacker," Italiano said. "He can score goals, he's very fast, he can dribble at pace and his intention is to always go forward. "And the most important thing for me is he's a really, really good person." The left-footed Eze will join the Phoenix once he obtains his New Zealand work visa and he can't wait to meet his new teammates. He will wear the same number seven jersey previous adorned by Barbarouses, who finished his third Phoenix stint at the end of last season and has signed with rivals Western Sydney. Barbarouses scored 23 goals in his last two seasons to lift him to 98 in the A-League, the fourth-most by any player. The Wellington Phoenix now have 19 players contracted for the 2025-26 men's season and have filled four of the five visa spots. Former MasterChef Australia star George Calombaris has revealed how a series of scandals lost his company $3 million and led to a private battle with alcohol addiction. The Greek-Australian chef joined the cooking show as a judge in 2009 and quickly became a fan favourite both on-screen and off. He went on to build a multimillion-dollar hospitality empire in the years that followed, but back-to-back scandals saw it take a massive financial hit. In 2017, the celebrity chef was involved in an altercation with a fan at the A-League grand final, and in 2019 he admitted to underpaying approximately 500 of his current and former employees $7.8 million in wages over a six-year period. That same year, Calombaris and fellow judges Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan left MasterChef after 12 seasons over contract negotiation breakdowns, and, when the pandemic hit in 2020, Calombaris found himself at rock bottom. Now in candid interview with Ouzo Talk, Calombaris details his spiral into alcohol addiction, which all came to a head when his brother found him drunk in his car one night.

Warriors' Tanah Boyd into driver's seat to face Tigers' Luai
Wests Tigers are wary of Tanah Boyd as he prepares to take the wheel and drive the Warriors back on course amid their injury crisis. Ex-Gold Coast halfback Boyd has been tasked with getting the Warriors' top-four tilt back on track in his first game replacing Luke Metcalf, whose breakout season has been ended by a knee injury. For his Warriors club debut, 24-year-old Boyd lines up opposite Jarome Luai as the Tigers co-captain prepares to back up from State of Origin, in Auckland on Sunday. "The moment [Luai] walked onto the plane with the boys you could feel the lift," said Tigers coach Benji Marshall. "He'll be sweet to go." ADVERTISEMENT Former premiership-winning five-eighth Marshall has a high opinion of Boyd, who has won all 13 of his games for the Warriors' ladder-leading NSW Cup team this year. "He's a really solid player, really tough defensively, good kicking game, takes the line on," said Marshall. "We're going to have to be on." Warriors coach Andrew Webster chose Boyd as his halfback over Te Maire Martin to ensure the versatile Martin could remain on the bench in case of more injuries. The Kiwi club have had to cope with the mid-game losses of Metcalf, Mitch Barnett, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak in recent weeks, although the latter returns from an ankle issue this week. Boyd last played first-grade for the Titans in September, but Webster felt comfortable giving him the "keys" to the Warriors this week. "Every halfback's got to have the keys. They have to. But the keys are in the way he does it. He drives the car differently [from Metcalf]. That was pretty corny, wasn't it?" the coach said with a laugh. Webster said Boyd and Metcalf were "completely different" with the former a kick-first game manager and Metcalf noted for his electric running ability. ADVERTISEMENT "[Boyd] just needs to be himself. He's going to play a different style to what Luke does but we just want him to be himself," Webster said. "We just know if he does that, we're going to be in good shape. "We're really confident in his ability."
