That evening, Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin was told at the last minute that her Welcome to Country at the Storm vs Rabbitohs game had been cancelled - leaving her "heartbroken."

To make a stand, the Djirri Djirri, who are the only Wurundjeri female dance group and traditional custodians of Narrm (Melbourne), refused to take the stage.
A Māori rōpū, Ngā Mātai Pūrua Kapa Haka, who were also set to perform, chose to stand in solidarity with their First Nation brothers and sisters and decided to "boycott."

"My first emotion was shock and disbelief," she said.
"Seeing Aunty upset, we all knew we weren't going to go ahead...It goes against our protocols to be told 'no' on our unceded lands."
Nicholson-Ward said that the Storm's CEO claimed the decision was made "to protect them" - but their group had already prepared for possible backlash.
"We all came to an agreement that if anything does happen...We have our babies with us, and we need to stay strong and stay humble."
She called the Storms decision to say no to a senior Wurundjeri elder "shocking and disappointing."
"That's a next level of disrespect."

In a statement, Melbourne Storm said it acknowledged the miscommunication and would meet with those involved.
"There was some confusion on [ANZAC day] and we take responsibility for that," Storm chairman Matt Tripp said.
"We apologise for the misunderstanding and will be meeting with them to clear this up."
The club also said it would continue discussions with First Nations and Māori communities to strengthen its relationships.

Nicholson-Ward said there is a common misconception within Australia on what a Welcome to Country is.

Nicholson-Ward says sharing their knowledge and strength to the next generation is so important as their culture has been sleeping.

"It's when an elder from the language group - on which the event is gathered - welcomes people to their traditional lands and cleanses people of any negative energy or spirits to make sure the space is a safe space."
She said, "It's honouring the people, the land, animals, waterways, and the spirits of these lands that we gather on and acknowledging the ongoing connection that we have to our traditional countries."
"It's also to grant safe space, safe passage whilst traveling through or visiting someone else's Country. It's also a chance to educate, unite, and connect through our shared histories and also connect to the oldest continuous culture in the world."
She said a Welcome to Country is also only done by an elder of that community.
"A lot of people think it's welcoming people to Australia and that's why we get a lot of racist remarks. Like, 'I don't need to be welcomed to my own country.' But when you don't have a clue about what a Welcome to Country is... It's ridiculous...people using it as a debate."
Nicholson-Ward said their decision to boycott was about protecting future generations.
"Sharing our knowledge and strength to the next generation is so important as we're an oral language and we're storytellers, and that's how our culture's been taught from generation to generation."
She traced that duty back to her great-grandmother, who she said was forcibly removed from Wurundjeri Country and sent to Coranderrk Mission at Healesville - "where many First Nations people were sent to live on missions and reserves, like animals."
After the Melbourne Storm cancelled a Welcome to Country by Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin on ANZAC day, Djirri Djirri and Ngā Mātai Pūrua Kapa Haka refused to perform - calling for more respect to indigenous elders and customs.

"They were forbidden to speak their language, forbidden to practice their culture," she said.
"For generations after, my great-grandmothers culture has been sleeping and now we're awakening our culture and our language within my mum's generation, my generation."
Nicholson-Ward said she wants the future generations to grow up knowing their heritage with pride, not shame.
"We want the next generation to stand up for what they believe in, to grow up in spaces where their voices are heard and respected. That's why we were so passionate on the day, because [our babies] were in our arms, I thought, if we don't stop this disrespect, how will our babies grow up in a safe space in the future?"
Tyson Tuala, President and spokesperson for Ngā Mātai Pūrua, said the group stood in immediate solidarity with Djirri Djirri and Aunty Joy.
"We really recognise the vastness and absolute desecration of culture here," Tuala said.
"We've seen the diffference...languages sleeping, multiple different groups not heard of, multiple iwi, clans, mob, tribes, reduced down to single digits, and many lost."
"In those positions, no doubt we could've got up, we could've said a few things. We could've definitely sung, haka. We decided to stay silent so that the full respect to our First Nation brothers and sisters could be felt in that space."

Tuala said no person outside of a specific culture should enter into a debate about whether or not a cultural protocol is appropriate.
"If you let happen next to you or around you, then you are now complicit in actions that happen against your culture on your land."
He called the decision to cancel the Welcome to Country "comical".
"No culture should feel the indignity of having somebody choose whether or not their practices are appropriate. And two, if you are on this land and it's not yours, you should treat it as good, if not better than your own home."
Nicholson-Ward thanked Māori whānau in Aotearoa and Te Whenua Moemoea for their tautoko.
"We can all connect to the mistreatment, the attempted genocide and the colonial ways and the transgenerational trauma that we're all a part of in this generation," she said.
"I think that's why the Māori community feels that pain as well. When another First Nation people are targeted and told they cannot speak their language anymore or mistreated in any way, we all feel that pain."

"I think that's exactly why on the day, the solidarity and union was instant. It's that universal feeling that we can all relate to."
"We all carry that transgenerational trauma from generation to generation. But I think it's our time now to break those barriers, stop those cycles and pass down that generational strength."
Nicholson-Ward said she wants organisations to take accountability, show respect and build genuine connections with Indigenous communities and their elders.
"We want to feel their willingness to reach out and respect our cultures and learn properly. Learn the protocols, learn why we were so upset, and truly understand what a Welcome to Country is, and the spirituality and culture that we all connect to."
She said it's time for wider Australia to embrace its indigenous identity.
"We are the oldest living culture in the world and I feel like it's important for people and regular Australians to embrace it. It's the nation's culture and it seems that it's always swept under the rug."
"And we want an apology, as simple as that."

Tick them off. A huge crowd? How does 90,307 sound? Some brilliant old-school attacking rugby from both teams? Yes. Telecast in 130 countries, it was a game to debunk the idea that rugby has lost its appeal to all but an increasingly shrinking group of aged diehards. And to round it off, there was a refereeing controversy that will run for as long as Wallabies fans can still watch television replays and hear the cries of disbelief from commentator Morgan Turinui. Good on you, Sir Clive After losing the first test in Brisbane 27-19, the Australian team copped it from all quarters. Their own media and public were bitterly disappointed, and before the second test, there was a cutting comment from former Lions and England coach Sir Clive Woodward. He suggested the Wallabies were 'boys playing against men'. Few would have dreamed the same Aussie players were about to rock the Lions. Suddenly, the September test with South Africa at Eden Park is not the only major All Blacks showdown Auckland fans should look forward to this year. Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt carried the brunt of criticism after Brisbane, which was a harsh call considering the relatively average performance of Australian sides in Super Rugby. Given the likeable almost ego-free person Schmidt is, it was a pleasure to watch his team respond with such an outstanding performance. The Wallabies revival started in the forwards, with a scrum that was potent and lineouts that operated with impressive expertise. Add in the physicality of giant lock Will Skelton and captain Harry Wilson, and the base was rock solid. Rob Valetini was as dynamic as he has been all season for the Brumbies. He may well be the best blindside flanker currently playing test rugby. When even Schmidt is outraged Schmidt is virtually the anti-Eddie Jones when it comes to stoking controversy. But the Kiwi obviously felt so strongly about a decision in the 77th minute by Italian referee Andrea Piardi and his assistants, he didn't hold back after the game. The officials had taken no action about what Schmidt felt was head-to-neck contact between replacement Lions flanker Jac Morgan and Aussie forward Carlo Tizzano. Had Morgan been penalised, there would not have been time for Lions wing Hugo Keenan to score the 80th-minute match and series-winning try. Because it was Schmidt who made the comment Australia had been let down by the referee, you have to take it seriously. But having watched the chain of events involving Morgan and Tizzano numerous times, it does feel like a hairline decision that could have gone either way. A more picky referee or TMO might have called a penalty. It was Australia's bad luck that nobody in the officiating team in Melbourne was in a nit-picking mood. Man of the match As impressive as so many of the men in gold jerseys in front of him were, my man of the match was Australian halfback Jake Gordon. The 32-year-old veteran and Waratahs captain has a flinty edge to him that's matched by his ability to read the game. Typical of his vision was his try in the 29th minute, when he dummied past bewildered defenders to give his team an 18-5 lead (with Tom Lynagh's conversion) which looked like the basis for a victory. The match-up between Gordon and All Black Cam Roigard will be fascinating when they face off in the Rugby Championship. Photo / Photosport A brilliant idea still working It's one of sport's ironies that despite rugby being an upper-class sport in England from its earliest days, tours by combined British Isles teams began in 1888, with a privately funded trip to Australia and New Zealand that had no official connection to fiercely amateur rugby unions in Britain. Over the centuries, the Lions have become one of the most successful and profitable inventions in sport, to the point where every player on the Australian tour will receive a payout of $210,000. Like most good ideas, the concept of having the best players from four international rugby sides combine to tour the other side of the world seems obvious once it has succeeded. The Lions are powerful enough to be a yardstick for any international team. They also give rugby fans in the Southern Hemisphere the chance to watch superstars from the Six Nations, whose home countries tour Downunder so rarely. Academy graduate Lukas Kelly-Heald scored the decisive spot kick as the Phoenix beat Perth Glory 8-7 in the shootout played in driving rain at the Olympic Stadium in Perth. The round of 32 tie had finished level at 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra time, which was interrupted for more than half an hour due to lightning. Kelly-Heald earlier scored his first competitive goal for the club to put the Nix in front at half-time before Socceroos striker Adam Taggart drew the Glory level in the 89th minute to force an additional 15 minutes a side. Neither team was able to break the deadlock in extra time, sending the tie to penalties. Perth had a chance to win the shootout 5-3 but spurned their fifth spot kick and reserves midfielder Lachlan Candy then converted his to take it to sudden death. The Glory sent their ninth penalty over the bar, but Kelly-Heald made no mistake of his to seal the win for Wellington and spark wild celebrations. However Phoenix head coach Giancarlo Italiano missed Kelly-Heald's decisive spot kick, but not his maiden goal for the Phoenix. "I don't watch penalties so I've got to watch the replay and see his finish. I heard there were some good penalties. "He put in a great stint. There was talk about taking him off in extra time but he just trooped through. Giancarlo Italiano named the same XI which started last week's match against Wrexham AFC. Auckland FC play their round of 32 game on Tuesday against Gold Coast Knights.

Photo: In the nine weeks since Auckland FC's first A-League season came to an abrupt end, coach Steve Corica has watched his daughter get married, been on holiday to Fiji with his wife and tried to move on from a disallowed goal that left him fuming . Auckland exited the A-League at the semi-final stage last season, going down to Melbourne Victory 2-1 on aggregate goals. What annoyed Corica most was the manner in which his team were ousted in front of their home fans. In May Corica was adamant Auckland had been wronged by the officials who disallowed a goal in the second semi-final. This week he said the players were over it but for him "that one it hurts very much still". With time to reflect on a season that netted the Premiers Plate , Corica comes into Auckland's second A-League season with the view that season one was a "really great achievement", but he is motivated to go one better. Photo: Andrew Cornaga/ Corica has a history of winning and the opportunity to add another piece of silverware to Auckland's trophy cabinet, even before the A-League kicks off on 17 October, is one he is focused on. Auckland did not play in Football Australia's annual knockout competition, the Australia Cup, last season but will enter the competition in the round of 32 this year when they play the Gold Coast Knights, on Tuesday. The Australia Cup pits A-League teams and club sides from different states against each other in a battle for the trophy. The Wellington Phoenix kick off their campaign against fellow A-League side Perth Glory on Sunday, but the draw has been a bit kinder to Auckland. "It's really exciting for them I think to play against an A-League team," Corica said of the Knights, who won the NPL Queensland last year. "Obviously we won the Premiership last year, so it'd be a great achievement for them if they could knock us off as well." Auckland are professionals up against semi-professionals, but the Knights have the advantage of being match fit while the Auckland players are only a few weeks into pre-season. "It's our first hit out and obviously they're probably halfway or three quarters of the way through the season, so they're definitely going to be fitter than us I'd say at the moment and that's always the case when we've just come into the start of the season, so we want to get the job done in 90 minutes. "We don't really want to go into extra time right now with the fitness levels of the boys." Corica does not see the Australia Cup as a time to experiment - he has his eyes on the prize - but he will not have a full A-League squad to select from. Off-season departures have left Corica and director of football Terry McFlynn with "three or four" spots still to fill. A striker, a winger and a centre back are the main targets. With only one more place for a foreign player available in the squad they are being tactical about which position that goes to - and it will not be the defender. Until the new signings are made other players have a chance to impress. "I think it gives other people opportunities to have a start and to make their claim for a starting squad during the season so they've got it right now and it's in their hands to do well for the club and for themselves as well." Auckland will stay in Queensland after their first Australia Cup game to play Brisbane Roar in a pre-season friendly.
