Ground Zero, Mamdani and ‘Jewish Memory'

New York
If Zohran Mamdani is elected mayor of New York, Daniel Libeskind would like to bring him to Ground Zero and tell him a thing or two about tolerance. 'He's clearly not someone to trust when it comes to his relation to Jewish issues,' Mr. Libeskind says. 'I am worried if he's elected.'

Trump Warns of New 'Great Depression' if Courts Block His Tariff Plan: 'It Would Be 1929 All Over Again'

President Donald Trump is warning of potential economic fallout if his extensive tariff policy is overturned, hinting at a new Great Depression. What Happened: Trump voiced his apprehensions in a post on Truth Social, suggesting that a negative verdict on the tariff policy by a 'Radical Left Court' could have catastrophic implications for the country's economy. He underscored the difficulty the U.S. would face in bouncing back from such an economic setback. "If a Radical Left Court ruled against us at this late date, in an attempt to bring down or disturb the largest amount of money, wealth creation and influence the U.S.A. has ever seen, it would be impossible to ever recover, or pay back, these massive sums of money and honor. It would be 1929 all over again, a GREAT DEPRESSION!" he said in the post. "There is no way America could recover from such a judicial tragedy, but I know our Court System better than anyone, there is no one in history that has gone through the trials, tribulations and uncertainties such as I, and absolutely terrible, but also amazingly beautiful, things can happen. Our Country deserves SUCCESS AND GREATNESS, NOT TURMOIL, FAILURE, AND DISGRACE," Trump further added. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed with a 0.5 percent loss in the aftermath of the tariff imposition, and the S&P 500 index also dipped by approximately 0.1 percent. However, the markets made a comeback on Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average seeing a 0.6 percent increase and the S&P 500 index climbing by 0.8 percent. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit is presently examining Trump's rationale for his tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Earlier this week, former House Speaker Paul Ryan speculated that Trump's emergency tariff authority could be overruled by the Supreme Court. While economic historians generally agree that tariffs were not a cause of the Great Depression, some do argue that the Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act signed into law on June 17, 1930, less than nine months after the Wall Street crash of 1929, made the Depression worse. Why It Matters: The potential reversal of Trump's tariff policy could have far-reaching implications for the U.S. economy. The President's warning of a possible depression underscores the gravity of the situation. The tariffs, which have already caused fluctuations in the stock market, are a contentious issue that could significantly impact global trade. The outcome of the U.S. Court of Appeals' review of the tariffs under the IEEPA will be critical in determining the future direction of the U.S. economy. JD Vance Just Responded To Trump Name Dropping Marco Rubio As A Potential "MAGA Heir"

Following Donald Trump's comments about who he believes will be his successor, Vice President JD Vance has responded. If you missed it, earlier this week, Trump was asked during an LA 2028 Olympic press conference whether he believes JD is his apparent "heir" for the 2028 presidential election. His response? Trump said, "I think most likely. In all fairness, he's the vice president. I think Marco [Rubio] is also somebody that would maybe get together with JD in some form." Twitter: @Breaking911 Related: "I also think we have incredible people, some of the people on the stage right here. It's too early, obviously, to talk about it. Certainly, [JD is] doing a great job and he would be probably favored at this point," Trump concluded. Related: Now, JD has responded. During a sitdown with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, reporters asked Vance for his thoughts on Trump's statement. 'My view on the politics of 2028 is I'm not really focused even on the election in 2026, much less one two years after that,' JD said. 'If we do a good job for the American people, the politics will take care of itself.' There you have it, folks! We're still recovering from 2024 and already looking ahead to 2028. Beto O'Rourke Trashes Texas Republicans: ‘These Motherf**kers Are Panicking'

Former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke didn't mince words when talking about Texas Republicans' attempts to create a new redistricting map that would disenfranchise millions of non-white voters. 'These motherfuckers are panicking right now,' O'Rourke said during an interview in New Orleans on Friday for Netroots Nation, a nonprofit organization for progressive activism. O'Rourke was referring to Republicans' attempts to arrest dozens of House Democrat lawmakers who left the state to deny House Republicans a quorum to gerrymander district lines. Under the new proposed map, President Donald Trump would pick up five more GOP-leaning congressional seats in Texas ahead of the 2026 midterms. The new map would also take voting power away from Latino and Black voters. 'You know that Trump asked Greg Abbott, our governor, to give him five congressional seats in Texas,' O'Rourke explained. 'And thick as thieves, he and the Republican state legislature have been busy at work carving up the state. They were gonna vote on these five new districts on Monday, but thank god for Texas Democrats. Fifty-four of them left the state, broke quorum, said 'To hell with that,' and defied Donald Trump and stopped this power grab in the state of Texas.' On Tuesday, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) asked the FBI to help Abbott (R) track down and arrest House Democrats who left the state. Abbott has also threatened to push for even more GOP-leaning congressional seats if Democrats continue to block the redistricting effort. State Rep. Vince Perez (D-El Paso), one of dozens of lawmakers who left the state, told HuffPost the new redistricting would give Latino voters ― who number more than 11 million in the state ― just one-third of the political power of a white resident. 'This is clearly a racially engineered map that I think all Americans would be appalled by if they really looked at the details of this,' Perez said. Along with threats of arrest, lawmakers have also faced threats of violence. Earlier this week, a group of Texas lawmakers was forced to evacuate their hotel in Chicago over a bomb threat. O'Rourke has also been in the crosshairs of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who said Friday he is suing O'Rourke for using his political group, Powered by People, to raise money to cover costs for Democrats who have left the state. O'Rourke said it's time for Democrats to fight back. 'They are betting that our side is going to give in and give up, that we are the old Democratic party that was more interested in concession and compromise,' O'Rourke said Friday. He accused 'older Democratic leaders' of 'bending the knee and submitting to these guys.' 'Rather than saying 'To hell with that, we're going to fight you tooth and nail,'' O'Rourke said. 'Whatever it takes to make sure that we are ruthlessly focused on stopping [Republicans'] power grab and making sure we win power ourselves. 'We're not going to let Ken Paxton frighten us, intimidate us,' he added. 'The country wants to see a fight.'
