Photos recovered from an encounter site in 2024 helped identify Pahalgam terrorists
The three Pahalgam terrorists who were killed during Operation Mahadev on July 28 were identified and tracked with the help of photographs recovered from a mobile phone seized by the security forces after an encounter in south Kashmir in 2024, a senior government official said. The phone contained several pictures of the three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists identified as Suleman, alias Faizal Jatt, Hamza Afghani, and Zibran posing with guns and ammunition. Hid in Dachigam forest The photographs were then matched with the accounts of eyewitnesses present at the Baisaran meadow on April 22 and a search was launched for them in the Dachigam forest, around 20 km from Srinagar, where they were hiding after the terror attack. The terrorists were using a LoRa (long range) wireless module to communicate, and its signals helped the intelligence agencies track their device was likely assembled, and has been sent for forensic examination, the official said. Home Minister Amit Shah informed the Lok Sabha on July 29 that indigenous technology was used to track the three terrorists in the Dachigam forest. The Minister said that on May 22, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) received information about the presence of terrorists in the Dachigam area through human intelligence. He said 'continuous efforts were made by the IB and the Army from May 22 to July 22 to confirm the information with an equipment made by our agencies to capture ultra signals in Dachigam'. 'While all three are Pakistanis, Hamza Afghani belongs to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region in north-west Pakistan,' the official said. The official said the terrorists were sighted multiple times in the forest but they always managed to get away. Security forces combed the forests and monitored areas close to streams and rivers as the terrorists came there to fetch water. As reported by The Hindu, a group of 20-25 hardened terrorists from Pakistan infiltrated around three years ago and are said to be operating in the forest and mountains across Pir Panjal in Jammu and the forests in south Kashmir. In 2024, the foreign terrorists split into two groups, one led by Suleman who was killed during Operation Mahadev on July 28 and the other group led by another Pakistani identified as Musa. Since 2021, around 150 security personnel have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir, likely carried out by the same group. 'After Operation Mahadev, we have received crucial information about the other foreign terrorists and we have launched operations to track them down,' said the official.

Body of Pakistani National Handed Over At LoC In Rare Cross-Border Humanitarian Move
In a rare humanitarian move across the Line of Control (LoC), Indian authorities on Saturday repatriated the body of a Pakistani national to officials from Pakistan at the Teetwal Crossing Point in north Kashmir's Karnah sector. The body was handed over at 6:00 PM under strict security and full administrative oversight. The deceased had initially remained unidentified after being recovered on July 20 from the banks of the Kishanganga River near Government Higher Secondary School, Keran. After conducting the necessary legal formalities under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the body was buried by the local Auqaf Committee, as no claimants had come forward. Later in July, Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) formally communicated that the deceased was a Pakistani citizen and requested its return. In response, the District Magistrate of Kupwara ordered the exhumation of the body under Section 196 of the BNSS to facilitate identity verification and dignified handover. The repatriation process was jointly supervised by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Karnah Zaffar Ahmad Lone, Tehsildar Karnah Mohammad Amin Bhat, and the Station House Officers of both Keran and Karnah police stations. Medical personnel and local magistrates were also present to ensure proper legal and humanitarian procedures were strictly followed. The body was transported from Keran to Teetwal and respectfully handed over to Pakistani authorities at the LoC in what officials described as a rare act of cross-border compassion. The operation was carried out through coordinated military communication between both sides, demonstrating a shared commitment to dignity in death even amidst tense geopolitical relations. Official statements from the Ministry of External Affairs and Pakistan's Foreign Office are still awaited as the handover draws wider regional and diplomatic attention.

Kolkata Police Probe Espionage Angle In Arrest Of Bangladeshi Model Shanta Paul
The officials of the Kolkata Police are probing to figure out whether Shanta Paul, the Bangladeshi model arrested from Kolkata earlier this week on charges of illegally staying in the country after securing fake Indian identity documents, was working as a spy in the country just like Haryana-based YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra. The officials are probing this new angle after learning through her social media account that Paul went to the India-Nepal-China border and recorded a video. Police investigation also revealed that Paul had opened a page on social media called 'Asan Travels Kolkata and Bangladesh' where she was promoting her tourism business. The police officials are also investigating whether Paul took a loan from any state-owned bank in India to open a hotel, based on her Facebook post. A city police insider said that Paul had also travelled to several places in West Bengal and neighbouring Sikkim. "She posted photographs and videos of her visits on social media. As a travel vlogger, she went to Nathu La in Sikkim. There, she took pictures of the India-Nepal-China border. Investigation is on to ascertain whether there are similarities between her case and that of Jyoti Malhotra, as she also used to travel to different places in India as a travel vlogger and take pictures and videos there," the police insider added. Jyoti Malhotra was an Indian travel vlogger, who ran the YouTube channel "Travel with JO". In May this year, Malhotra was arrested by the police under the Official Secrets Act amid the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict. Malhotra was accused of espionage, passing sensitive information to operatives of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). It was learned during investigations that she used to take travel photographs and videos and smuggle those to Pakistan. The Kolkata Police is now investigating to find out whether Shanta Paul also operated similarly to that of Malhotra. Last Monday, the officers from Park Street police station arrested Paul from a flat in Kolkata's Golf Green area in south Kolkata. The police became suspicious after seeing the documents she had provided while applying for a passport. During the arrest, several Bangladeshi documents were recovered from Paul's Golf Green flat. It is learnt that Paul, a model by profession, entered India with a valid visa. However, instead of going back before the expiry of her visa, she managed to fake Indian documents like the AADHAAR card and Voters' ID card for herself during that interim period. After managing those fake identity documents, she started not only staying in Kolkata permanently but also earning substantial amounts through modelling and acting assignments, city police officials probing the case, said. Police have learnt that she had acted in supporting roles in some Bengali and Tamil movies during the last couple of years. She even purchased a property in the southern outskirts of Kolkata, which was jointly owned by her and her live-in partner, a resident of Andhra Pradesh and a Merchant Navy official by profession. Police are now investigating whether Paul, using her presence in the glamour world, had developed any influential connection within West Bengal as well as in other states, by which she was able to operate openly in the glamour and acting world without causing doubts in the minds of anyone. It is learnt that even in Bangladesh, she was quite successful as a model and also had won some awards there. She had earlier worked as a staff member of the Bangladesh-based Regent Airways.
