'Thought it was an earthquake': Eyewitnesses recount horrific Ahmedabad plane crash; say sky was filled with black smoke

Time of India13 hours ago

NEW DELHI: Mohan Bahadur Kshatriya, an eyewitness to the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, recounted scenes of devastation and chaos on Saturday as he joined rescue efforts just minutes after the aircraft went down on Thursday.
Living just 500 meters from the crash site, Kshatriya said he initially mistook the deafening explosion for an earthquake.
'I heard a loud bang and thought it was a storm or an earthquake,' he said. 'When I stepped out, there was smoke and fire everywhere. People were shouting that a plane had crashed. We ran toward the mess where students were screaming for help.'
He worked alongside Army personnel to rescue five severely injured students from the wreckage.
He added, 'They were in extremely serious condition. Then we searched further and found a body in terrible shape, trapped under the debris,' he added.
Another eyewitness, Rekha Kshatriya, described the moment the aircraft hit as unlike anything they had ever experienced before, even in a neighborhood accustomed to loud noise.
'I have been staying here for the last 13-14 years, that day, around 1:30 p.m., we heard a loud noise.

Although we are accustomed to hearing loud noises, this time the noise felt like our eardrums would burst. It seemed like an earthquake. We had just sat down to have lunch, and the furniture in our house had started shaking violently. For a second, it felt like a bomb blast happened. Then, when we went outside, we saw that a plane had crashed.
We saw broken pieces of aircraft everywhere. It was difficult to understand whether it was a plane crash, a terrorist attack, or something else.
The whole sky was filled with black smoke. High flames were rising everywhere."
As questions arises about how the tragedy occurred, the civil aviation ministry has constituted a high-level multi-disciplinary committee to investigate the causes of the crash.
"A High Level Multi-disciplinary Committee is constituted for examining the causes leading to the crash of the Air India Flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick Airport (London) on June 12, 2025.
The Committee will examine the existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines issued to prevent and handle such occurrences and suggest comprehensive guidelines for dealing with such instances in the future," the ministry said in an official statement.
It clarified that the new panel will not replace other formal inquiries but will focus on formulating improved protocols to prevent similar disasters in the future.
The aircraft involved, Air India AI-171, was en route from Ahmedabad to London's Gatwick Airport when it crashed on June 12.

Manhunt underway for 57-year-old Vance Boelter: Minnesota lawmaker, husband killed; second legislator wounded in politically motivated shootings

A 57-year-old man is being sought by authorities in connection with two politically motivated shootings that targeted Minnesota lawmakers early Saturday, killing former state House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, and injuring Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, officials told the Associated Press. Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Vance Boelter, according to two individuals familiar with the investigation. The suspect is accused of posing as a police officer and carrying out coordinated attacks at two homes — one in Brooklyn Park, where Hortman and her spouse were fatally shot, and another in Champlin, where Hoffman and his wife were wounded. Police say the attacker was dressed in a fake police uniform and drove a vehicle designed to resemble a squad car. 'The suspect exploited the trust of our uniforms,' said Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson. 'That betrayal is deeply disturbing.' A fake police SUV found at one scene contained a manifesto that named several lawmakers and officials, including the two victims. 'We immediately made alerts to the state,' Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said, adding that officers were now providing additional security to other potential targets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Governor Tim Walz called the shootings 'targeted political violence,' adding: 'We must all… stand against all forms of political violence. Those responsible for this will be held accountable.' According to Drew Evans, superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, a shelter-in-place order was issued after the attacks. Authorities believe the suspect fled from Hortman's home following an exchange of gunfire with police. Autopsies confirmed that Hortman and her husband died from gunshot wounds. The Hoffmans, though critically injured, were reported to be receiving treatment. In response to the incident, Minnesota's State Patrol urged people to avoid 'No Kings' protests planned across the state, citing precautionary concerns after similar flyers were found in the suspect's vehicle. Organisers have since cancelled all protests. Hundreds of heavily armed police and sheriff's deputies, including SWAT units, were deployed throughout the Minneapolis suburbs, setting up checkpoints and searching for the gunman. President Donald Trump said the FBI would assist in the investigation, promising full prosecution of those involved. 'Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America,' he said. Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth, a Republican, called the killings 'evil,' and asked residents to 'lift up in prayer the victims… and law enforcement personnel.' Hortman was first elected in 2004 and served as House Speaker. Hoffman, in the Senate since 2012, previously served on the Anoka Hennepin School Board. The shootings have raised alarm nationwide as political figures face increased threats. Gabrielle Giffords, a former congresswoman and shooting survivor, said: 'An attack against lawmakers is an attack on American democracy itself.'

Slew of complaints in gold investment scam

Thiruvananthapuram: Fort police, probing the gold fraud linked to Al Muqtadir Gold and Diamond Jewelry, received over a hundred complaints in the past 24 hours. While police began registering cases, some of the complainants later withdrew their complaints after the jewellery representatives promised to return the deposited gold or money, said Fort police. The overall number of cases registered in the fraud case is 18. Most complainants said they were drawn in by repeated ads in mainstream newspapers. "When gold was offered without making charges, we saw it as a good investment. They also offered schemes like exchanging old ornaments for new ones, or monthly returns for depositing gold for a fixed term. After maturity, they promised to return the original gold. There were also deposit schemes where money could be paid in instalments to get gold at a discount — none of these promises were kept," said Laila S, one of the complainants. Sabeena Beevi, 48, of Kazhakkoottam, deposited 131 grams of gold for 11 months, expecting new ornaments for her daughter's wedding — but received neither. The police found that the firm hired hundreds of agents on commission to attract investors. Many of them are now being added as accused. On Saturday, three people, Gulzar Seth, Soubin, and Jasim were named. The owner Muhammed Mansoor Abdulsalam and six others were added earlier. The cases are registered under BNS Sections 316(4) and 318(2) for criminal breach of trust and cheating. tnn Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
