Syria steps back from Paris meetings with Kurdish-led SDF
The SDF was the main fighting force allied to the United States in Syria during the fighting that defeated Islamic State in 2019 after the group declared a caliphate across swathes of Syria and Iraq.
In March, the SDF signed a deal with the new Islamist-led government in Damascus to join Syria's state institutions.
The deal aims to stitch back together a country fractured by 14 years of war, paving the way for Kurdish-led forces that hold a quarter of Syria to merge with Damascus, along with regional Kurdish governing bodies.
It did not specify how the SDF will be merged with Syria's armed forces, however. The SDF has previously said its forces must join as a bloc, while Damascus wants them to join as individuals.
The source was quoted by the news agency SANA as saying that Damascus would not be involved in negotiations with any side that aims to 'revive the era of the former regime'.

Al Jazeera said two of its correspondents and two cameramen were killed in an Israeli strike on their tent in Gaza City on Sunday, citing the director of a local hospital. 'Al-Sharif, 28, was killed on Sunday after a tent for journalists outside the main gate of the hospital was hit. The well-known Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent reported extensively from northern Gaza.' The Israeli military said Sharif was a 'terrorist' who 'posed as a journalist'. 'A short while ago, in Gaza City, the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) struck the terrorist Anas al-Sharif, who posed as a journalist for the Al Jazeera network. Irish rock band U2 sharply criticise Israeli government actions in Gaza
Members of Irish rock band U2 issued a strong critique of the Israeli government's actions in Gaza on Sunday, while also condemning Hamas, in a detailed post shared on the group's website and social media. 'The Government of Israel is not the nation of Israel, but the Government of Israel led by Benjamin Netanyahu today deserves our categorical and unequivocal condemnation,' frontman Bono wrote. He criticised the blockade on humanitarian aid and Israel's plans for a military takeover of Gaza City. 'We know Hamas are using starvation as a weapon in the war, but now so too is Israel and I feel revulsion for the moral failure.' Bono also condemned the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 – stressing that Hamas militants should not be equated with the Palestinian people, 'who have for decades endured and continue to endure marginalisation, oppression, occupation and the systematic stealing of the land that is rightfully theirs'. Bono and fellow bandmates Adam Clayton, David Evans who is known as The Edge, and Larry Mullen Jnr called for an immediate end to the fighting on both sides. 'Preserving civilian life is a choice in this war,' wrote Clayton.
