Woman to appear in Pietermaritzburg court after illegal alcohol bust
A 28-year-old woman is set to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court today after she was arrested in connection with the manufacturing and distribution of illicit alcohol without a valid licence.
The Witness reports she was arrested during a crime intelligence-driven operation on Saturday.
A large quantity of illicit alcohol with an estimated street value of R120 000 was recovered.
The multi-disciplinary operation was executed after police received information regarding illegal alcohol manufacturing activities in the Dambuza area, under the Plessislaer policing precinct.
Members of the Multi-Dimensional Organised Crime Pietermaritzburg, Taylor's Halt SAPS, Plessislaer SAPS and private security company Magma Security were part of the operation.
uMgungundlovu District Commissioner Major General Mduduzi Shezi commended the collaborative effort of all role players involved in ensuring that illegal operations of this nature are detected and swiftly dealt with.
'The production of unregulated alcohol not only undermines the economy but also poses serious health risks to consumers.
'The SAPS remains committed to rooting out criminal activities and urges members of the public to continue reporting suspicious operations within their communities,' said Shezi.

Breakthrough in DJ Sumbody case as four suspects are arrested

Four men, including one suspected of ordering the hit on Oupa John Sefoka, widely known as DJ Sumbody, have been arrested. The multi-talented DJ was tragically gunned down in a hail of bullets in November 2022, sending shockwaves across the country. On Monday, 21 July 2025, the SAPS announced a major breakthrough, confirming the arrest of four key suspects in the high-profile case. Gauteng's top organised crime unit, working closely with the SAPS Political Killings Task Team, successfully apprehended four key suspects. Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the national police spokesperson, said that officers arrested the suspects in Gauteng on Monday afternoon. Three of the suspects are believed to be the hitmen, while the fourth is suspected to be the mastermind who orchestrated and ordered the fatal attack. Police also said they found the weapon used in the shooting and confirmed its link to several other murders. The suspects are facing charges that include murder and conspiracy to commit murder. General Masemola said the breakthrough is critical and expressed hope it would bring long-awaited closure to grieving families. 'Well done to the teams that have been piecing together evidence since November 2022. This is a culmination of hard work and dedication to justice. This is one of those complex cases that our teams needed to take their time in ensuring a thorough investigation so that we could ultimately bring a strong case before the court', said Gen Fannie Masemola. TIMELINE OF EVENTS: THE DJ SUMBODY MURDER CASE DJ Sumbody died in a hail of bullets on November 20, 2022, in Woodmead, Johannesburg. Shortly after, by late 2022, police began gathering ballistic evidence and investigating possible motives related to his brutal murder. Subsequently, in 2023, investigators transferred the case to the SAPS Political Killings Task Team as its complexity increased. Then, by mid-2024, new forensic evidence surfaced, revealing firearm links to several other murder cases under investigation. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE ARRESTS? Not the first child: What happened to Tiffany Meek's newborn baby?

Tiffany Meek – the mother of Jayden-Lee Meek – lost her first child, a newborn baby boy, years before he was conceived. The circumstances of the infant's death have resurfaced amid her charges of murder, defeating the ends of justice and crimen injuria. Jayden-Lee's body was discovered just metres away from his doorstep on the morning of 14 May. He had suffered a blunt force head injury. In a TikTok video posted earlier this year, Tiffany Meek paid tribute to her firstborn son, Kaiyle Levi Dunn, who was born on 10 August 2012. Sadly, the baby boy died just two days later. 'Gone, but not forgotten', she captioned the clip. According to an affidavit, Tiffany gave birth to the baby when she was 18 years old. It's unclear what the infant's cause of death is. @tiffs_dunn One Sweet Day indeed. #foreverinmyheart👼💔 ♬ One Sweet Day – Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men Sometime later, Tiffany met and married Leandro Meek, and the couple welcomed Jayden-Lee in 2014. According to her statement, she has been separated from her husband since 2022. She is now in a relationship with another man. Following Jayden-Lee's death, Tiffany Meek and a group of family and friends held a memorial service, where they released balloons into the sky in memory of him. Holding on to her balloon a little longer, she could be heard saying a clip posted on social media: 'I know you're dancing with your brother. And watching over us every day because that is the type of child that you are'. She added: 'I'll miss you'. @renew_u #justiceforjayden ♬ original sound – ReneW🏳️‍🌈🌈🇿🇦 Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . [Videos] Roodepoort mother accused of killing son: Police describe chilling evidence

The bail application of Tiffany Nicole Meek (31), the mother accused of murdering her 11-year-old son, Jayden-Lee Meek, will continue tomorrow after a day of shocking evidence was presented in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court. Roodepoort Record reports that during today's court appearance, a state witness, a detective from the Florida police who is also the investigating officer in the case, took the stand and detailed the events from the time Jayden-Lee was reported missing to the arrest of his mother. According to his testimony, the deceased's school bag, shoes and red school jacket were found at Unit 13, where Meek resides. It was further revealed that Jayden-Lee's body was discovered shortly after Meek left the complex in the early hours of May 14 at about 05:00. 'When officers observed the deceased's body at Discovery Clinic, they noticed injuries to the forehead, chin and lips, which were bleeding. The deceased also had bruises on the neck, arms and right leg,' the detective testified. He added that a pillow found in Meek's unit contained blood droplets. These were sealed for forensic testing and later confirmed to match the deceased's blood. 'After the post-mortem, it was revealed that the cause of death was a blunt force injury to the head,' he said. Meek's affidavit, read by her defence attorney Noven Naidoo, claimed that police officers had refused to search her unit because they lacked a search warrant. However, the investigating officer disputed this. 'The accused kept diverting police officers to other locations and refused to let them near her unit. In a case as sensitive as this, police would have proceeded with a search even without a warrant,' he explained. 'It also doesn't make sense that the accused spent the night at her mother's house when she knew the child was missing and could have returned at any time.' Unlike previous appearances, proceedings were calmer, with no demonstrations outside the court. Meek remains in custody. Owen Meek, cousin of Jayden-Lee Meek's father, briefed the community on how they feel.
