Szokol, Ilhee Lee shoot 62s to share LPGA lead
Playing on Friday afternoon at Seaview's Bay Course, Szokol followed her opening birdie run with a bogey on No.6, then added birdies on Nos. 8, 9, 13 and 16.
"Happy to get off to a great start and really looking forward to the weekend," Szokol said. "Lots of golf left. Really excited to see good golf and hard work paying off today."
The 30-year-old American teamed with Cheyenne Knight to win the 2023 Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational for her only tour victory.
Top-ranked Nelly Korda opened with a 71, and No.2 Jeeno Thitikul had a 68. Maja Stark, the US Women's Open winner Sunday at Erin Hills, shot 70.
Lee birdied three straight holes three times - on Nos.3-5, 8-10 and 16-18 - and had one bogey in her morning round.
The 36-year-old South Korean won the 2013 Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic for her lone tour title.
"I don't have expectation," Lee said. "I just play golf. I just come out, have fun. That's all I do."
Japan's Akie Iwai was third after a 65 in one of only two 54-hole tournaments left on the LPGA Tour schedule. The other is the Walmart NW Arkansas Open.
"Normally four days, so I feel fast, shorter tournament," Iwai said. "That's why we must make a lot birdies."
Wei-Ling Hsu was at 66 with Aline Krauter, Ayaka Furue, Polly Mack, Saki Baba, Dewi Weber and Gurleen Kaur.
Robyn Choi is the leading Australian after shooting a three-under 68.
In a tie for 20th, Choi had six birdies but spoilt her card with a double bogey on the second that was followed by a bogey on the par-five third - her 11th and 12th holes.
One shot further behind in a tie for 34th is Karis Davidson, who had four birdies and two bogeys.
Defending champion Linnea Strom shot 72.

Golfer says he ‘overdosed' on creatine during BMW Championship
American golfer Ben Griffin got the shakes at the BMW Championship — though it wasn't necessarily because of nerves, but rather due to swallowing a 'large rock' of creatine. World No. 17 Griffin said that he 'started getting super shaky' and 'felt like I had tremors' on Sunday after accidentally swallowing a large amount of the supplement. Creatine 'contributes to rapid energy production and may enhance power or speed bursts requiring short periods of anaerobic activity,' according to Harvard Health, and usage of the supplement is common among gym enthusiasts as there is evidence it 'can hasten muscle recovery after strenuous exercise.' 'I've taken it on the golf course before. It's fine,' Griffin said, per the PGA Tour. 'I started taking it after my second shot, and I accidentally swallowed one of the big rocks in my water bottle. I've never overdosed on creatine before, but I think I did in the moment because I didn't really drink any water after that. I basically just inhaled a snowball,' the two-time PGA Tour winner explained. Griffin said that he usually takes 15mg of the supplement daily, but on this occasion, he estimates he accidentally ingested that amount at one time. 'I was physically shaking like I've never felt before,' Griffin said. 'And I don't normally miss a lot of short putts. It was really a weird situation.' The golfer said that his caddie intervened by making him drink water and calming him down. Griffin was six over par for the first three holes — carding a triple-bogey, double-bogey and bogey — and thought about withdrawing from the tournament, but after that, he said the physical effects started to wear off. He then made seven birdies and signed for a one-under 69, finishing tied for 12th in an impressive comeback. 'It was probably more just a little bit flustered. I was fine after the second shot on two. And then it was — I felt good so I went about my day and got it back to under par,' he said. The golfer said he will be limiting his intake of the supplement in future, calling the events of the day a 'pretty crazy story.' 'I don't think I'll be taking too much creatine in the future. Western Utd lose new signing, remain in licence limbo
With the clock ticking on their future, Western United's off-field issues have cost them recruit Jaiden Kucharski, who has departed without playing a competitive game. United are in a fight for their existence, with staff and players in limbo, after they were stripped of their A-Leagues licence on August 8 by Football Australia for financial reasons. The club has until 10am AEST on Thursday to appeal the decision by Football Australia's First Instance Board (FIB), an independent body responsible for club licensing - an extended deadline. As of Tuesday evening, an appeal had not yet been submitted. United, based in Tarneit in Melbourne's western suburbs, have also been unable to register players due to a FIFA ban related to an ongoing dispute with former striker Aleksandar Prijovic. That ban meant new signing Kucharski and captain Ben Garuccio could not be registered in time to play in United's Australia Cup round-of-32 loss to Sydney FC. It has now cost them talented 23-year-old attacker Kucharski, who is currently without a club after a promising start to his career at Sydney FC. "Striker Jaiden Kucharski will depart the green and black after the club and player mutually agreed to part ways," United said in a statement. "With consideration for the current FIFA registration ban, both parties have respectfully agreed to a termination. "While the club is disappointed with this outcome, we respect the player's decision to pursue his career elsewhere. "Jaiden has been exceptional during his short tenure with the club, and we wish him the best in his football future." United have been in financial turmoil for months, with players and staff paid late in April, May and June, while superannuation payments were also delayed. The club, led by chairman Jason Sourasis, had hoped their issues would be solved by a planned takeover by American group KAM Sports, announced in May. But that is yet to be completed because KAM hasn't submitted its full ownership proposal to the Australian Professional Leagues.
