World Lion Day 2025 to be celebrated today in Gujarat
World Lion Day, celebrated annually on August 10, aims to raise awareness about the conservation and protection of lions worldwide. In Gujarat, the Asiatic Lion is a unique ecological and cultural treasure, found only in the Saurashtra region.
The grand celebrations of 'World Lion Day' will be organised on August 10 across 11 districts of Saurashtra, Gujarat, to promote awareness about the conservation and protection of the 'King of the Jungle'—the Asiatic Lion. These majestic animals roam freely in their natural habitat across approximately 35,000 sq. km in 11 districts of Saurashtra. The lion population in Gujarat has increased by 32% since 2020, rising from 674 in 2020 to 891 as per the May 2025 lion population estimation.
The Barda Wildlife Sanctuary spans 192.31 sq. km across Porbandar and Devbhumi Dwarka districts. Barda is emerging as a second home for Asiatic Lions. After the natural migration of lions to the area in 2023, the lion population has grown to 17, including 6 adults and 11 cubs. The sanctuary is a significant biodiversity hotspot and a key area for the conservation of Asiatic Lions.
Being in the vicinity of the Dwarka- Porbandar-Somnath tourist circuit, the Barda area holds a significant tourism potential. A safari park in about 248 Ha area is planned to be initiated for which land have been allocated by the State Government. Wildlife conservation works amounting to about Rs 180.00 crore will also be launched at the event.
The event will also be joined through satellite communication by the lakhs of students from the schools and colleges across the 11 districts of the Greater Gir Lion Landscape.

NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council's (NDMC) much-awaited project of constructing a clock tower will finally see progress. The Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, who conceived the project last year, will lay the foundation stone for the clock tower at the intersection of Mandir Marg and Shankar Road on Monday. It will be a gateway to the NDMC area, according to the council. The project will cost Rs 1.8 crore and will be completed in a period of six months. The tower design will represent a blend of Mughal, Rajput, and colonial architectural elements and is part of a heritage revival initiative in Delhi, stated the council. It will bear brick cladding (wire-cut bricks) with neatly finished joints per the architectural pattern," as per the project plan. To give an aesthetic look, there will be a pedestal stone finish given with black granite of 50 mm thickness, mechanical anchors, and other advanced engineering specifications added to the tower. Provision for stainless steel staircases will be made for internal tower maintenance. It will have a non-slippery finish and handrails made of stainless steel. "Further, there will be stone engraving done on the façade area with proper polishing to highlight the architectural drawings. Provision for enough lighting and electrical works will be done to highlight this place," as per the plan. The certified clock to be installed at the tower will bear a state-of-the-art design, have long durability, weather resistance, illumination in backlit and front-lit, and mounting with the latest technology with vibration resistance fittings for fixing. The clock tower will enhance the cultural landscape, attract visitors, and add to the skyline in Lutyens' Delhi, stated the council. NDMC initiated a search for a suitable location to erect a clock tower following Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena's inspection in April 2024. Thereafter, the NDMC got the soil of the proposed location tested for building the clock tower via a private agency, and the soil was found suitable for building the clock tower structure. The proposal was earlier sent to the DUAC in 2024 as building a clock tower in that part of the city required amendments to the layout plan. The commission, after seeking some specific details, including technical ones, gave its consent. The new site will be operated by a vendor through proper selection and based on proven national expertise. Previously, the 'New Delhi Town Hall' featured a clock tower atop its headquarters, but the structure was demolished in the 1980s to make way for the present building. "The Old Town Hall was built in 1933, and it was inaugurated by the Viceroy Lord Willingdon. Thereafter, four giant bells were imported from Britain, and these were installed at the tower of the Town Hall. There were timekeepers deployed to ring the bells every hour since wristwatches were not that common. However, in the 1960s, these bells were replaced with modern clocks," the official said. Lion's share: India's big cats roar to record 891; 32% jump in five years
. India's Asiatic lion population rose from 674 in 2020 to 891 in 2025, a jump of 32.2%, according to the 16th Lion Population Estimation report released on Sunday. The number of adult females has increased from 260 to 330, up by nearly 27%, boosting the species' ability to reproduce. The 2025 count includes new satellite populations in Gujarat's Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, Jetpur, Babra-Jasdan and nearby areas. In total, there are now 497 lions in satellite populations spread across nine locations. For the first time, 22 lions have been recorded in corridor areas. Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav said on X that India took pride in being home to the Asiatic lion. He called the popuation surge a 'phenomenal success' and urged continued efforts to protect the species. "India draws immense pride from being home to the Asiatic lion. Over the last few years, our lion population has grown steadily. From 523 lions in 2015 to 891 lions in 2025, we have registered a phenomenal success. On World Lion Day, let us resolve to protect our lions and help them thrive. My greetings to all those passionate about lion conservation," Yadav wrote. Over the last decade, the lion population has grown by more than 70%, and their range has expanded by nearly 60%. Amreli district has the highest numbers, 82 adult males, 117 adult females, and 79 cubs. Mitiyala Wildlife Sanctuary and adjoining areas saw the fastest growth at 100%, followed by Bhavnagar Mainland at 84% and the South Eastern Coast at 40%. But some areas recorded declines. Girnar Wildlife Sanctuary dropped by 4% and the Bhavnagar Coast by 12%. World Lion Day, observed on August 10, aims to raise awareness about lion conservation. The geography of Asiatic Lions once extended from Turkey to India but is now only restricted to the Saurashtra region in Gujarat.
