Jey Uso retains the World Title on the anniversary of his WWE debut

Yahoo6 days ago

With the world title on the line and the referee down, interference ran rampant as a Samoan warrior emerged victorious, still the champion.
For a moment, it felt like a throwback to the days when Roman Reigns ruled the ring. Instead, it was Jey Uso who stood tall, successfully defending his title against Logan Paul at Saturday Night's Main Event. After the show, Uso reflected on his journey to becoming World Heavyweight Champion, which began exactly 15 years ago that Saturday.

'I appreciate every single one of y'all, man, on my journey, and it's still going. From the bottom of my heart, man, I love y'all,' said Uso as he spoke to the fans in Tampa's Yuengling Center.
That emotional moment was grounded in history. Uso referenced his time in Tampa, where he and his brother Jimmy once wrestled for Florida Championship Wrestling, WWE's developmental system before NXT. For over a decade, Jey and Jimmy dominated WWE's tag team scene, culminating in 2023, when the twin duo headlined WrestleMania 39 and Money in the Bank.
In many ways, Uso's ascension mirrors that of WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart. For nearly seven years, Hart and his partner Jim Neidhart were arguably WWE's preeminent tag team. As the Hart Foundation, they captured two world tag team titles and had several memorable encounters with the British Bulldogs, Demolition, and The Rockers.
After the team amicably parted ways, Hart began climbing the ranks of WWE's singles division. In 1991, he defeated Mr. Perfect at SummerSlam to win the Intercontinental Title. At WrestleMania VIII in 1992, he won the title a second time, defeating one of the faces of WWE's golden era, Rowdy Roddy Piper. Before the year was through, Hart defeated the legendary Ric Flair to win his first of five WWE Championships.

Similarly, Uso captured the Intercontinental Title last year before going on to dethrone Gunther at WrestleMania 41 to win the World Championship. But unlike 'The Hitman,' Uso has faced criticism from some fans online, who argue that his in-ring skills don't measure up to past champions like Hart.
However, focusing solely on in-ring technique misses what pro wrestling is truly about: storytelling, mic work, and emotional connection. In that regard, Uso is as good as anyone who came before him.
'There's just this magical connection between him, and when he's in that ocean of people that are loving what he does that becomes undeniable,' said Paul Levesque, WWE's Chief Content Officer, after WrestleMania. Levesque praised Uso's work not just for being a guy with a trendy catchphrase but for how he has grown as a performer.
'I think everybody saw something different in Jey over the last couple of years in that Bloodline story and the way he handled himself,' said Levesque of Uso's time as Reigns' understudy.

Still, to cement Uso as a legitimate champion, WWE needs to present his title reign with more authority. Since capturing the title, Uso has had three matches with questionable finishes. He was disqualified against Seth Rollins in what was Uso's first title defense. Two weeks later, 'Main Event' Jey beat Bron Breakker by DQ in a non-title match. Both matches were on Raw, and each was plagued by outside interference.
At Saturday Night's Main Event, Uso defeated Paul, but again, the involvement of John Cena and Cody Rhodes took the luster off Uso's first successful title defense.
Next, Uso will team with Cody Rhodes to face John Cena and Logan Paul at Money in the Bank on June 7. Two nights later, he'll face Gunther in a rematch on the June 9 episode of Raw. Another strong win over 'The Ring General' could cement Uso's credibility heading into SummerSlam—WWE's second-biggest event—where he's expected to play a major role.

Wes Anderson's is now the top-grossing limited opening of the year with an estimated $570,000 this weekend at just six locations in New York and Los Angeles for a per-theater average of $95K. The Focus Features' film expands to 1,500 screens next weekend. The film unseats A24's Friendship, which kicked the indie box into high gear a few weeks ago with a great $445K limited opening and $75K per-theater opening for Andrew DeYoung's feature debut starring comedian Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd. Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Mathieu Amalric, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, and Benedict Cumberbatch also star in the pic, which is coming off its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month. The Phoenician Scheme is the third major collaboration of Focus, Anderson and Indian Paintbrush, who also partnered on Anderson's most recent feature Asteroid City (2023) as well Moonrise Kingdom (2012). It was produced by Anderson for his American Empirical Pictures banner alongside longtime collaborators Steven Rales of Indian Paintbrush, Jeremy Dawson and John Peet. The movie was filmed in Germany in association with Studio Babelsberg. Asteroid City's PTA of $132K was the biggest in years, and The Grand Budapest Hotel in 2014 a record-setter at $200K. The latter ended up scoring nine Oscar nominations including Best Picture and winning four. Focus took over the Angelika Film Center in New York this weekend with Phoenician Scheme on all six screens, a jazz band and movie-themed merchandise and activations in the lobby and concessions – reflected in higher ticket prices — $30 for standard and $60 for premium. NYC's Alamo Brooklyn and AMC Lincoln Square and AMC's The Grove, Century City and Burbank in Los Angeles are other opening theaters. Other new openings: IFC Films debuted UK period thiller to $130K at 412 theaters, and Music Box Fims opened Jonathan Millet's feature debut from Cannes 2024 with French-Tunisian star Adam Bessa at four locations to $5,600. Patti Lupone apologizes for ‘disrespectful' comments made about fellow Broadway actors during New Yorker interview

Patti Lupone has issued an apology after making what she now describes as 'demeaning and disrespectful' comments about two fellow Broadway stars in an interview with the New Yorker last week. The 'Evita' star's apology comes after hundreds of performers from the Broadway and theater communities issued an open letter first published by Playbill and called for accountability in light of Lupone's 'deeply inappropriate and unacceptable public comments' about Broadway stars Kecia Lewis and Audra McDonald. In the interview, Lupone referred to Lewis as a 'b*tch' and said McDonald was 'not a friend,' prompting a wave of backlash against the notoriously thorny legend. Lupone had previously had public spats with both performers. 'I am deeply sorry for the words I used during The New Yorker interview, particularly about Kecia Lewis, which were demeaning and disrespectful,' Lupone wrote in a statement posted to her Instagram page Saturday. 'I regret my flippant and emotional responses during this interview, which were inappropriate, and I am devastated that my behavior has offended others and has run counter to what we hold dear in this community.' Lupone added that she hopes 'to have the chance to speak to' McDonald and Lewis personally to offer her 'sincere apologies.' The letter, which was issued to the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League, also called upon the institutions to take action by not welcoming Lupone at 'industry events,' including the Tony Awards, which are presented by the two institutions. 'This language is not only degrading and misogynistic—it is a blatant act of racialized disrespect. It constitutes bullying. It constitutes harassment,' the letter stated. 'It is emblematic of the microaggressions and abuse that people in this industry have endured for far too long, too often without consequence.' The Tony Awards are set to take place June 8. In her apology on Saturday, Lupone wrote that she 'wholeheartedly' agreed with 'everything that was written' in the open letter. 'From middle school drama clubs to professional stages, theatre has always been about lifting each other up and welcoming those who feel they don't belong anywhere else,' Lupone wrote. 'I made a mistake, I take full responsibility for it, and I am committed to making this right. Our entire theatre community deserves better.' CNN has reached out to representatives for Lupone, Lewis and McDonald for comment. In the New Yorker interview, Lupone was asked about an incident that happened last year when Lewis posted a video to her Instagram page asking for an apology from Lupone after she had called 'Hell's Kitchen,' the stage production in which Lewis stars, 'too loud.' She said Lupone, who was at the time starring in 'The Roommate' in the theater next to 'Hell's Kitchen,' had requested that the latter's sound department make adjustments. In Lewis' video, she called herself and Lupone veterans in the industry and said Lupone's actions were 'offensive' and 'racially microaggressive.' When asked about the incident by the New Yorker, Lupone responded: 'Don't call yourself a vet, b*tch.' 'This is not unusual on Broadway. This happens all the time when walls are shared,' she added. Lupone also reacted to McDonald showing support for Lewis in the comments section of the video, telling the New Yorker she thought 'that's typical of Audra.' 'She's not a friend,' she said. McDonald was asked about Lupone's comments on 'CBS This Morning' on Thursday, but seemingly took the high road. 'If there's a rift between us, I don't know what it is,' she said. 'That's something that you'd have to ask Patti about.'

Mark Hamill Has No Plans for Star Wars or Luke Skywalker Return

Since the original Star Wars back in 1977, Mark Hamill has been a constant for the franchise alongside Original Trilogy costars Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford. From gazing out longingly at the twin suns of Tattooine to rocking the Chanel boots and schooling his nephew in front of the First Order, audiences have watched him bring Luke Skywalker to mostly live-action life time and again. But now, Hamill thinks it's time to officially move on. In a recent interview with ComicBook for his upcoming movie Life of Chuck, the actor said he's appreciative to George Lucas 'letting me be a part of [Star Wars] back in the humble days when he called it 'the most expensive low-budget movie ever made.' We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that. But my deal is, I had my time.' (That, and with Luke dead as of Last Jedi, he has no desire to come back as a nude Force ghost.) Going forward, Hamill thinks the people in charge of Star Wars should 'focus on the future and all the new characters.' He's not wrong, but it's a funny as hell time to say it, as it's been a tough ask for this franchise ever since Force Awakens came out nearly a decade ago. (The actor has even been a part of those complications!) And for all of Hollywood, well, Awakens pretty much wrote the book on legacy sequels that feature new, younger-generation characters hanging with returning elders, a formula that's been copied in Scream, Jurassic Park, Marvel (several times), and even Karate Kid. What is the future if not the past revisited? We'll see how Star Wars handles the future with the post-Rise of Skywalker Rey movie and 2027's Starfighter.
