KL Youth Force, Trainee Allowance Among Proposals At Federal Territories Youth Assembly
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the KL Youth Force aims to support disaster victims in the Federal Territories, particularly in welfare-related crises such as floods and fires.
'Although similar structures already exist, such as Rakan NADMA (National Disaster Management Agency volunteers), the KL Youth Force needs further study. If it involves welfare matters, it must follow proper standard operating procedures (SOPs),' she said.
On the proposal for trainee allowances, Dr Zaliha noted that while the government sector already provides such support, the call was to expand this to the private sector.
'Some private companies do provide allowances, but there's no clear policy. I intend to discuss this with Human Resources Minister Steven Sim for further consideration,' she added.
She was speaking at a press conference after winding-up session of the three-day assembly, which began on June 21.
A total of 15 resolutions were presented, covering areas such as the economy, social development, technology, and legislation.
Asked whether the proposals would be brought to higher levels, including Cabinet discussions or the 2026 Budget planning, Dr Zaliha said all approved resolutions would be submitted to the Federal Territories Department (JWP) for follow-up.
'For matters beyond my portfolio under the Ministerial Functions Act 1969 (Amendment 2023), I will refer them to the Cabinet for consideration by the relevant ministers.

Conference hopes to set direction for regional AI advancement
Digital Ministry secretary-general Fabian Bigar KUALA LUMPUR: The Asean Artificial Intelligence Malaysia Summit (AAIMS) 2025 will provide input for the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Plan 2030 in an effort to achieve Malaysia's ambition to become a leader in AI and digital technology in South-East Asia. Digital Ministry secretary-general Fabian Bigar said AAIMS 2025, scheduled to be held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 12 and 13. The summit will feature the theme Human Centred AI, is the first regional AI conference for Asean. 'We haven't had an AI conference like this before, so we want to see it continue because it's not just a conference where we showcase technology, but is also a platform for discussion among ministers, sharing information and knowledge from industry and academia. 'In line with the theme of human-centred AI for a better tomorrow, it will highlight the benefits of AI for people and reduce the negative effects of AI,' he said during the a programme titled 'AAIMS: AI Driving Asean's Digital Economy' on Bernama TV recently. He said the conference would be attended by more than 1,500 delegates including Asean secretary-general Kao Kim Hourn. According to Fabian, among Malaysia's objectives in hosting AAIMS 2025 is to lead the AI transformation in Asean, as well as strengthen regional cooperation to advance the AI framework through the Asean AI framework and create an Asean AI Safety Network. 'We have plans to attract strategic investments so we also want to give confidence to foreign investors that Malaysia is ready to become a regional AI hub. We will also promote comprehensive AI development programmes,' he said. He said that in the face of geopolitical turmoil between the world's two superpowers, Malaysia and Asean have an opportunity to create a third path in AI. 'There is an urgent need because of these geopolitical problems for us in Asean to work together regionally to face the challenges of AI,' he said. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said, through the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan earlier this month, the country has set a clear direction to lead South-East Asia's growth in the AI, digital technology and renewable energy industries. He said the National AI Action Plan 2030 would drive local talent development, research and technology commercialisation to support the widespread adoption of AI. In addition, Anwar said the coverage of the country's 5G networks is targeted to achieve 98% in populated, industrial, and rural areas by 2030. Bangladesh chief advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus to undertake official visit to Malaysia
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 10 (Bernama): Chief Advisor of the Government of Bangladesh Dr Muhammad Yunus will undertake an official visit to Malaysia from Monday until Wednesday (Aug 11 to Aug 13, 2025), at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a statement on Sunday, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry said the visit reciprocates Anwar's official trip to Bangladesh in October 2024, and several advisors and senior government officials will accompany Yunus. The ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said that Yunus will be accorded an official welcoming ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex on Aug 12, followed by a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister. "Both leaders are expected to review the progress of Malaysia-Bangladesh relations, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, labour, education, tourism and defence. "The discussions will also include regional and international developments of mutual interest,' the statement said. During the visit, Yunus and Anwar will witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in the fields of defence, energy, strategic and international studies, capacity building in semiconductors, and trade promotion. An Exchange of Notes will also be signed in the areas of diplomatic training and higher education. The ministry said in honour of Yunus and his delegation, the Prime Minister will host an official luncheon at the Seri Perdana Complex. It said that on Wednesday (Aug 13), Yunus is scheduled to deliver a public lecture and be conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The Chief Advisor will also attend a session with members of the Yunus Social Business Centre community and the university network, in a programme jointly organised by UKM. In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Bangladesh reached RM13.35 billion (US$2.92 billion), an increase of 5.1 per cent compared with 2023. Bangladesh is Malaysia's second-largest trading partner and export destination in South Asia. Major Malaysian exports to Bangladesh include petroleum products, palm oil and chemicals, while imports comprise textiles, footwear, petroleum products and manufactures. It said the visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and foster stronger cooperation in areas of mutual benefit, building upon the strong foundation established since diplomatic ties were forged in 1972. - Bernama

UPUOnline records 511,006 admissions for public universities
KUALA NERUS: The UPUOnline system has recorded a total of 511,006 admissions for undergraduate programmes in public universities nationwide this year, says Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir. He said of the total, 497,020 admissions or 97.26% were local students, while 13,986, or 2.74% were foreigners. Zambry dismissed claims suggesting that local student quotas were being reduced to accommodate foreign students. "After meeting the needs and criteria for local students, universities may allocate limited spaces for foreign students, particularly to support internationalisation efforts aimed at enhancing university rankings," he told reporters after officiating the launch of the Akademia Complex at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu here on Sunday (Aug 10). In a related matter, Zambry also rejected claims that foreign students in the country are primarily enrolled in medical courses, limiting opportunities for local students. He further refuted allegations that foreign students are charged lower fees than local students. In another matter, Zambry stated that the Higher Education Ministry is monitoring water supply issues at higher education institutions, including those in Sabah and other states. While water supply falls under state jurisdiction, Zambry said the ministry would assist finding solutions if water shortages affect institutional operations. – Bernama
