Police open hate-crime probe after graffiti is sprayed-painted on Montreal mosque
Montreal police have launched a hate-crime investigation after graffiti reading 'F--k Gaza' was spray-painted on multiple sides of a mosque in the Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough.
The vandalism occurred on June 10, but officers were only called to the scene the following day, according to SPVM spokesperson Véronique Dubuc.
Police were dispatched to the Canadian Institute of Islamic Civilization building on Belmont St. near Décarie Blvd., where they found three pieces of blue spray-painted graffiti.
In a post on social media, the centre condemned the incident as 'not just graffiti' but 'hate,' describing it as Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian. The centre wrote: 'This attack was meant to intimidate us, but they don't realize how united we are.'
The investigation has been transferred to the SPVM's hate-crimes unit, which is reviewing surveillance footage.
No injuries or arrests have been reported.
It comes as the number of reported hate crimes in Montreal increased in 2024, according to the SPVM's latest annual report.

Mehak Singh discovered his car had been set on fire early Saturday morning in Ahuntsic-Cartierville, prompting a police investigation. An Ahuntsic-Cartierville man woke up Saturday morning to police at his door and his car destroyed by fire. Around 8:30 a.m., Mehak Singh, 27, said he heard a knock at the door. When he opened it, Montreal police (SPVM) officers informed him his vehicle had been the target of arson. 'I looked, and it was totally burned,' Singh said, adding that he had been asleep when the fire occurred. Montreal police said they received a 911 call around 6:30 a.m. reporting a vehicle on fire on Michel-Sarrazin Street near Grenet Street. Officers and firefighters were dispatched to the scene, and the fire was quickly brought under control. The vehicle was a total loss. The cause of the fire remains unknown. Singh, who has lived in Canada for about two years, said he doesn't know why anyone would target his car. 'I have insurance, but I don't know if it's covered or not,' he said. 'That was my first car. I loved it.' The investigation is ongoing. With files from Stephane Giroux

Israeli strikes on Gaza kill at least 20 as war rages on after the opening of a new front with Iran
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — At least 20 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip overnight and into Saturday, according to local health officials. The 20-month war with Hamas has raged on even as Israel has opened a new front with heavy strikes on Iran that sparked retaliatory drone and missile attacks. Another 11 Palestinians were killed overnight near food distribution points run by an Israeli- and U.S.-supported humanitarian group in the latest of almost daily shootings near the sites since they opened last month. Palestinian witnesses say Israeli forces have fired on the crowds, while the military says it has only fired warning shots near people it describes as suspects who approached its forces.
