Driver now charged with transporting stolen cattle
TELUK INTAN: The lorry driver accused of dangerous driving that caused the deaths of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) members, has been charged with transporting two stolen cattle.
Rudi Zulkarnain Mat Radi, 45, pleaded not guilty to a charge of assisting in concealing a black KK Cross bull and a white Brahman bull belonging to Rozali Ismail, 66. The offence was allegedly committed in Kampung Kebun Baru, Hutan Melintang, at 6pm on April 14.
The charge under Section 414 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of up to seven years, a fine or both, upon conviction.
Magistrate Naidatul Athirah Azman allowed bail of RM3,000 in one surety and set June 16 for next mention, Bernama reported.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Izzuddin Fakri Hamdan offered bail of RM5,000 but lawyer Mohd Hafizuddin Khan Norkhan requested a lower amount.
He said his client has no income because his licence has been suspended and the two bulls had been handed over to their owner.
Last Friday, Rudi Zulkarnain pleaded not guilty to nine counts of dangerous driving and causing the death of nine FRU members on May 13.

Police probe boat tragedy off Tanjung Harapan that claimed three lives
KLANG: Police have opened an investigation into the boat capsizing incident which occurred at 4.30pm off Tanjung Harapan, claiming three lives and leaving two people missing. North Klang district police chief Assistant Commissioner S. Vijaya Rao said the case is being investigated under Section 280 of the Penal Code for reckless or negligent navigation. He said this follows preliminary findings into the vessel's condition, witness statements, and the incident's circumstances. Police have so far recorded statements from three individuals, including the sole survivor of the tragedy. "Yes, we have recorded the survivor's statement. "In addition to the survivor, statements were also taken from two key witnesses, both affiliated with the Royal Selangor Yacht Club. "One of them was the person who made the emergency call to MERS 999. "He had sought help from a colleague, also from the Yacht Club, to assist in towing the sunken boat," he told reporters at a press conference at the Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) headquarters this evening. He said the vessel has since been refloated and towed to the Selangor MMEA headquarters for further inspection. The boat will later be transferred to the marine police base for a comprehensive technical investigation. "Our focus now includes a technical analysis of the vessel to determine if any elements of negligence or mechanical failure were involved," he said. The incident occurred on Friday evening and involved six people board a recently repaired boat. "Three victims, including a three-year-old boy, were found dead, while two others remain missing. "One teenager survived and is currently receiving medical treatment," he added. Vijaya said the search for the missing couple, identified as Gan Hon Tat and his wife Careen Man, is ongoing. He said the search and rescue (SAR) operation would be temporarily halted at 7pm due to poor visibility. "Based on advice from the Fire and Rescue Department, today's SAR efforts were mostly focused on the sea surface and inside the boat," he said, adding that it took nearly four hours for the authorities to retrieve and refloat the vessel after yesterday's incident. He said strong underwater currents made it unsafe for rescuers to conduct search below the surface.

AG must disclose more details on NFA over Teoh Beng Hock's death, says lawyer
IPOH: Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar should disclose further details on the decision by the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) to classify the case of Teoh Beng Hock's 2009 death as No Further Action (NFA), says Ramkarpal Singh. In a statement Saturday (June 7), the legal representative for the late Teoh's family said the reason given by the AG that there was insufficient evidence to commence criminal proceedings was disappointing. Ramkarpal said his firm had on June 3 received a letter dated May 30 from the AGC to explain the decision to classify the case as NFA. "I have perused the said letter and discussed it with Teoh's family. "We will need more time to study it before deciding on the next course of action, which may include initiating judicial review proceedings against the AG," he said. "Teoh's family is considering taking legal action and will announce their decision on this in due course," he added. "It is disappointing that the AG has come to the conclusion that there is insufficient evidence as the police have had ample time to investigate this tragedy since 2009. "His findings, particularly on the question of why he says there is insufficient evidence as a general statement, does not, in any way, overcome the family's real concerns that such investigations were not properly and professionally conducted," the Bukit Gelugor MP said. The AGC had on May 22 issued a statement that the case would be classified as NFA, after having reviewed and studied all evidence in the investigation papers submitted by the police. In the letter issued, Mohd Dusuki said the decision to classify the case as NFA was not to deny responsibility. He said there needs to be sufficient evidence to prove beyond reasonable doubt before prosecution could be started against an individual. "Having gone through all available materials, including forensics reports, witness accounts and expert findings, the conclusion is that there is insufficient evidence to support any charges under the Penal Code. "The law cannot permit charges to be pressed based on doubt," he said. "If new or believable evidence comes up in the future, whether it be from a witness, document or forensics development, I will ensure that the case will be looked at again without hesitation," he added. He said the matter has already become a lesson and was also acknowledged by the government. "The people will not forget this incident, while institutional reform has already started to prevent a similar incident from recurring," he said. "The AGC will ensure all prosecution will continue to be implemented fairly, systematically and according to the law," he added. On Nov 21 last year, the Kuala Lumpur High Court had ordered the police to complete the investigation into Teoh's death within six months. This was after a review application by the late Teoh's family against the Inspector-General of Police, the police's director of criminal investigation, the police and the Malaysian government, as the respondents, was allowed. Teoh, the political secretary to former Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead after giving a statement at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office on the 14th floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, Selangor.

Jobless jailed, fined for hurting son

Kota Kinabalu: A 43-year-old jobless was jailed six years and fined RM2,000 in default three months for causing hurt to his son with a wooden stick. Shahmar Asecio pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Marlina Ibrahim, to the charge against him. Advertisement He hurt to his 16-year-old son by hitting him with the wood at 11.30am on June 2, this year at a house in Kg Baitam Laut, Membakut. The offence is framed under Section 324/326A of the Penal Code. The court ordered Shahmar to serve the jail sentence concurrently with the sentence for another offence. In mitigation, Shahmar who was not represented asked for a lenient sentence. Advertisement However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Afiqah Alya urged the court to impose a heavy sentence to deter and give a lesson not only to Shahmar but public at large from committing such offence. The court heard that while the son was in the kitchen Shahmar came from behind and hit him with wood on his shoulder, head and right leg. The victim's mother then tried to stop Shahmar who suddenly took a machete and threatened the victim with the weapon.
