The accident in northwestern Russia occurred at 3am, Russia's rail network said. The bus was on the tracks when the train hit it at full speed. The train driver applied emergency braking 'but the distance was too short and he could not avoid a collision', the railway statement said. 'According to preliminary information, 12 passengers on the bus were injured and one of them died of injuries,' it said. Russia's Krasheninnikov volcano erupts for the first time in 600 years
ISTANBUL/MOSCOW (Bernama-Anadolu): A volcano in Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula erupted on Sunday for the first time in six centuries, authorities said, sending a massive ash plume eastwards towards the Pacific Ocean, Anadolu Ajansi reported. The regional office of Russia's Emergencies Ministry said the Krasheninnikov volcano, located in the country's Far East, saw an eruption plume rise to 6,000 metres (19,685 feet), citing data from the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT). "There are no populated areas along the path of the ash cloud,' the ministry said in a statement on Telegram, adding that no ashfall had been reported in nearby settlements and no tourist groups were currently in the area. The 1,856‑metre (6,089‑foot) volcano has now been assigned an "orange' aviation hazard code, signalling heightened risk to aircraft due to volcanic ash in the atmosphere. Authorities advised against travelling to the area or attempting to climb the volcano. "This is the first historical eruption of the Krasheninnikov volcano in 600 years,' said Olga Girina, head of KVERT, in comments to the Russian state news agency RIA. Girina said the eruption may be linked to a powerful magnitude‑8.8 earthquake that struck off Kamchatka's coast last Wednesday, triggering tsunami warnings across the Pacific, including in Chile. The Russian Academy of Sciences said it was the strongest quake in the region since 1952. On the same day, the academy reported an eruption at the Klyuchevskoy volcano, one of the most active in Eurasia, located about 160 kilometres (99.4 miles) north of Krasheninnikov. - Bernama-TASS

Beijing on top alert for heavy rain, tells residents to avoid going out
BEIJING (Reuters) -Beijing put most of its hilly districts on the highest alert for heavy rainfall on Monday and warned residents against going out unnecessarily, after dozens recently died in the deadliest floods to hit the Chinese capital since 2012. Up to 200mm (7.9 inches) of rain could hit parts of Beijing over a six-hour period from midday, weather forecasters warned. The city of 22 million people receives on average 600mm of rainfall each year. Late last month, at least 44 people died in Beijing after days of heavy rains. Most of the dead were people unexpectedly trapped by rapidly rising waters at a nursing home in Miyun district on the city's northeastern outskirts. The fatalities led authorities to admit to shortcomings in their contingency plans for extreme weather. On Monday, Beijing had six of its 16 districts on the highest alert for heavy rainfall - Mentougou, Fangshan, Fengtai, Shijingshan, Huairou and Changping - all of which lie in mountainous areas to the west and north of the city. The risk of flash floods and landslides is "extremely high", local authorities cautioned. In the summer of 2012, 79 people died in Beijing in the city's deadliest flooding in living memory. Fangshan district was the worst-hit, with one resident reporting a rise in floodwaters of 1.3 metres in just 10 minutes. Beijing's topography has been described by some as a rain "trap", with its mountains to the west and north capturing moist air and amplifying any ensuing rainfall as a result. In southern Guangdong province over the weekend, the bodies of five people were recovered after a large-scale search operation involving more than 1,300 rescuers. The five people, who went missing on Friday night, were "swept away by water" following heavy rainfall in recent days, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday.
