Mum dies after young son killed by drunk driver on way home from school

Gemma Painter, 29, had been looking forward to six-year-old Leo coming to live with her again when he was killed by drunk and drug-fuelled driver Joe-Lewis Tyler.
A devastated mother has died a year after her young son lost his life to a drink-and-drug -fuelled driver.

Gemma Painter, 29, was left heartbroken after the death of six-year-old Leo last February. The young lad had just been picked up from school when the taxi he was travelling in was struck by Joe-Lewis Tyler, 34, behind the wheel of a stolen BMW 3 Series.

Tyler had consumed approximately five pints of lager and four rounds of Sambuca and Jagermeister shots before he and an accomplice took the vehicle.

Harrowing CCTV footage showed the moment the grey BMW crashed into the white Ford Mondeo taxi that was transporting Leo. The taxi driver, Courtney Hemming, 26, and 39-year-old Claire Adkins, who was accompanying Leo to his foster home, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Leo was taken to hospital urgently but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter, reports the Mirror.
At the time of the tragic incident, Gemma had been eagerly anticipating the return of Leo to live with her. While laying flowers where the accident occurred, she made a touching tribute to her son, who adored PAW Patrol.
She said: "He always had a smile on his face and was a bundle of fun. I'm heartbroken that I won't see him again. He loved PAW Patrol and I gave him a pair of pyjamas with his favourite characters on. He said he loved wearing 'Mummy's pyjamas'."

Following a struggle with mental health issues after her son's passing, Gemma died "peacefully" at her residence on June 30. Her bereaved family honoured Gemma's memory and disclosed that her organ donations have saved the lives of four individuals.
Gemma's sister Kenzie Beck shared: "She'll be greatly missed by many people. She was always kind and caring and would always stick up for anyone. I think it's nice to know that so many people loved and cared about her. She's gone on to save four people in organ donations."
Her mate Beth Munden is now putting together a fun day event to collect funds for Gemma's funeral and to highlight the importance of mental health.

Beth said: "Sadly on Monday 30th June 2025, Gemma passed away peacefully. She was the life of the party. She was hilarious. You could be having your worst day possible, and you could be speaking to Gemma, and you'd feel alright again. She'd rather help out other people than help herself".
A GoFundMe page has already gathered over £2,700. An inquest into her death is scheduled for next March.

Tyler received an 18-year sentence at Worcester Crown Court last August. He had previously pleaded guilty to three counts each of causing death by dangerous driving and driving without insurance.
The court was informed that he had up to 215 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood – exceeding the legal limit of 80ml. Blood tests also indicated significant levels of cocaine and cannabis.

It was heard that Tyler had been drinking with his friend Miles Smith-Green at the West Midlands Tavern in Worcester, where they won £100 on the fruit machines.
After consuming five pints of lager and four shots, including Sambuca and Jagerbombs, the duo were asked to leave the pub due to their unruly behaviour. They proceeded to get into a stolen BMW and sped off towards Badsey, Evesham, Worcestershire, without bothering to fasten their seatbelts.

One motorist recounted that the vehicle was moving so swiftly she felt "fearful for her safety", while another described how Tyler nearly collided with her car at speeds reaching 100mph.
She recounted the harrowing incident as akin to a "near death experience". Another witness commented on Tyler's reckless driving, suggesting he had a "death wish".
During the sentencing, Judge James Burbidge addressed Tyler, stating: "Your actions have had a devastating effect on the victims as a result of your dangerous and selfish actions. They will remain bereft."

Gran's final moments revealed as twisted killer kept sick 'trophies' from dog walk murder

Roy Barclay who was living off-grid has been sentenced to life with a minimum term of 25 years The final moments of a much-loved gran have been revealed after she was brutally murdered while out walking her dog in the countryside. ‌ Anita Rose, 57, was enjoying her regular morning stroll with her springer spaniel Bruce when she was ambushed and beaten to death in a sickening act of violence, reports the Mirror. ‌ The mum-of-six, known fondly in her tight-knit village of Brantham, Suffolk, never returned home after her walk on July 24 2023. ‌ Chilling CCTV revealed the horrifying truth, that a man was following closely behind her. He was later named as Roy Barclay, a 56-year-old drifter with a violent past and a disturbing obsession with the occult. At the time of the sick attack, Barclay had been on the run from police having previously been jailed 10 years for committing grievous bodily harm with intent. ‌ The 56-year-old monster launched a savage assault on Anita near a footpath by the Ipswich to London railway line. She was punched, kicked and stamped on in what prosecutors described as a 'vicious and brutal' attack. It's thought the gran may have stumbled upon Barclay breaking into a nearby sewage works and confronted him, which became an encounter that soon turned fatal. ‌ Anita was found unconscious by shocked passersby. She was rushed to hospital but heartbreakingly never recovered. She died four days later from catastrophic head injuries. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Yesterday, Barclay was caged for life after a jury at Ipswich Crown Court found him guilty of murder. He'll serve a minimum of 25 years behind bars. ‌ Barclay, who has a history of violence, was on the run at the time of the killing. He had been jailed in 2015 for battering a pensioner during a row over food. The 82-year-old victim needed ten titanium plates in his skull. During the vicious attack, Barclay had tied the elderly man's dog lead to his foot - just as Anita's spaniel Bruce was found with his lead wrapped around her leg. ‌ Released on licence in 2020, Barclay vanished two years later and managed to dodge authorities while living off-grid in hidden woodland camps and under bridges. The killer was once known for his strange ties to occult groups - including connections to the late David Farrant of British occult fame. After breaking ties with the occult scene, he became a homeless drifter, with reports describing him as mentally unwell and surviving on scavenged food. ‌ After murdering Anita, evil Barclay manipulated the scene in a bid to try and cover his tracks. He stole Anita's phone and her pink jacket as a trophy, before leaving her to die. He later read news reports detailing how police were searching for the items. He then deliberately abandoned the phone in a public place, attempting to create a false trail and divert suspicion to someone else. Prosecutor Christopher Paxton KC told the court how Barclay had created a personal "treasure trove" of Anita's belongings in his hidden camp. His walking boots - caked in blood - were identified as the murder weapon. ‌ Even after his arrest in Ipswich Library on October 21, Barclay denied the murder. But the jury took just two and a half hours to reach their guilty verdict. Outside court following the jury's verdict, Anita's devastated family spoke of their pain and their determination to see real change. Her eldest daughter, Jessica, held back tears as she criticised systemic failures that allowed a dangerous man like Barclay to remain free. ‌ "We need to make sure that our communities are safe and that people are monitored... Criminals cannot remain at large. There's too much at stake and our communities need protecting," she said. And her daughter Jessica told Ipswich Crown Court at the sentencing today that Barclay had not shown any remorse. Fighting back tears as she read her victim impact statement, Ms Cox said: "He has put us through a nightmare which we can't wake up from. "I don't feel he has shown any remorse. I believe he's cunning and I believe he's enjoyed what he's done and the trial itself. He hasn't had to face us, he hasn't had to face the consequences of what he's done or what he's done to us."

What Ghislaine Maxwell said about Donald Trump in 9-hour prison interview

Maxwell, who is serving 20 years in prison for sex trafficking, spoke to Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche last month - and details of what she told Trump's former personal lawyer are beginning to emerge New details have emerged about what Ghislaine Maxwell said about Donald Trump in a prison interview last month. ‌ Maxwell is serving 20 years in prison on sex trafficking charges linked to America's most notorious paedophile, Jeffrey Epstein. Trump has faced mounting pressure for transparency about Epstein - amid widespread speculation that he was named in FBI files related to the case. ‌ So last month Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche set up a two-day interview with Maxwell, Epstein's fixer, who was accused of recruiting young girls for him to abuse. Before getting the No 2 job at the Justice Department, Blanche was Donald Trump's personal defence lawyer. ‌ It comes after the Mirror revealed Maxwell had been quizzed about high-profile Brits. But there has been no official announcement of what was discussed during the interview. ‌ And days after it took place, it emerged Maxwell had been moved out of her Florida prison to a cushier, minimum security prison camp in Texas - usually reserved for nonviolent white-collar offenders. It would have required her sex offender status to be waived to allow the transfer to take place. Today senior officials from Trump's team are gathering at JD Vance's house to discuss what to do next. ‌ Meanwhile, CBS News reports Maxwell said "nothing" during the 9 hours of interviews with Blanche that would "be harmful to President Trump." Citing a source familiar with the exchange, CBS claims Maxwell said " nothing in her presence that would implicate him." The group meeting at JD Vance's house - which is expected to include top figures including Blanche, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and the Vice President himself - is expected to discuss whether to release audio recordings or transcripts of some or all of the interview. ‌ Meanwhile, the House Oversight Committee subpoenaed the Justice Department yesterday for files in the sex trafficking investigation into Epstein, part of a congressional probe that lawmakers believe may show links to Trump and other former top officials. Get Donald Trump updates straight to your WhatsApp! The Republican-controlled committee also issued subpoenas for depositions with former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and eight former top law enforcement officials. The committee is also demanding interviews under oath from former attorneys general spanning the last three presidential administrations: Merrick Garland, William Barr, Jeff Sessions, Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder and Alberto Gonzales. Lawmakers also subpoenaed former FBI directors James Comey and Robert Mueller. But it was Democrats who sparked the move to subpoena the Justice Department for its files on Epstein. They were joined by some Republicans to successfully initiate the subpoena through a subcommittee of the House Oversight Committee.

Glasgow woman who vanished from sun lounger in Greece pictured hours before disappearance

Michele Ann Joy Bourda, 59, disappeared at around midday from Ofrynio beach in Greece on August 1. Missing tourist Michele Ann Joy Bourda was pictured enjoying breakfast at a cafe with her husband just hours before she vanished. ‌ The 59-year-old, who is understood to live in Glasgow, had been swimming at Ofrynio beach in the city of Kavala at around noon on Friday before she suddenly disappeared. The search for Michele has now entered its fifth day. ‌ A fresh image released to the media in Greece shows her eating alongside husband Christos at the beach-side restaurant on the morning of her disappearance. At the time, she was seen wearing a dark swimming costume and sunglasses. ‌ She was pictured talking to her husband Christos, who is Greek, who is pictured in the snap wearing a white cap. Mr Bourda was asleep when she disappeared at around midday on August 1. He then raised the alarm before racing to a local shop to ask if staff had seen her. ‌ Speaking to Protothema, the shopkeeper said: "The couple were together and at some point the husband fell asleep and it seems that the wife went in to swim. When the husband woke up and didn't see her next to him, he came to the store and asked us if we had seen his wife, who had disappeared. "He also told us that his wife was not very well, and that she had problems." As reported in the Mirror, Mr Bourda was understandably "stressed" when he entered the shop, the man said, as the hunt for his missing wife continues. ‌ Greek missing persons charity Lifeline Hellas put out a Silver Alert later that day after police were unable to locate her. An alert from the charity read: "Her life is in danger. If you know anything, contact the Silver Alert service, 24 hours a day, at the National SOS Line 1065." ‌ Michele is described as having straight blonde hair down to her shoulders, hazel eyes, is 1.73m (5ft 6in) tall and is thin. The British embassy in Greece shared a notice on Facebook which read: 'Michele Ann BOURDA went missing on 01/08/2025 at the beach of Ofrynio in Kavala. On the day she went missing, she was wearing a swimsuit with decorative stones, yellow water shoes and red plastic sunglasses. Her life is in danger.' A summer sports instructor said he saw someone who matched Michele's description swimming near the beach on Friday. He said the woman didn't appear to be in difficulty in the water. Michele was described as very adventurous and active today. Her neighbours in Glasgow said she likes hiking and swimming in cold water. ‌ One neighbour told Mail Online: "They've got bikes, and are quite active. They like to go walking, they like to go wild swimming. They would go, and they would often be away for the whole day in the summer. "Then if we saw them coming in and out and they would say, 'oh, we've been somewhere up north and we were swimming'. And I would see her sometimes sit and reading in the garden." The friends said they often see Michele and husband Christos out walking with backpacks on or loading the car for another day trip in the wild. Another neighbour added: "They've couple are very private and kept themselves to themselves. She is very quiet and timid and he is a bit more commanding. "They moved to Glasgow about six years ago because their son is studying here. They are retired and tend to go everywhere together even though they have two cars. They are quite guarded and private but I'm very shocked that she has gone missing." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
