Oman LNG boosts market position with record output, new contracts

Zawya3 days ago
Muscat – Oman LNG achieved its highest-ever production in 2024, while maintaining exceptional safety standards and a plant efficiency rate of 98.23%, reflecting its unwavering commitment to operational excellence and sustainable performance.
Hamad bin Mohammed al-Naamani, CEO of Oman LNG, confirmed that the company is preparing for a new phase of expansion with the commencement of long-term sales contracts this year, encompassing volumes from both Oman LNG and Qalhat LNG.
The company is prioritising advanced upgrades and maintenance to enhance its capabilities and surpass its 2024 achievements once these improvements are completed. This will position it at the forefront of gas producers globally, in terms of both performance and competitive cost.
In a statement to the Oman News Agency, Naamani said that 2024 marked a significant shift in the company's commercial strategy, with long-term sales contracts totalling 10.4mn metric tonnes per annum, providing a solid foundation for a diversified and flexible commercial portfolio.
He added that this strategy has enabled the company to strike a balance between long-term commitments and the agility to respond to immediate market opportunities. This approach has allowed the company to supply reliable energy to its partners while maximising added value, reinforcing Oman's role in supporting global energy security.
Regarding innovation and transformation in the energy sector, Naamani emphasised Oman LNG's commitment to supporting the sultanate's carbon neutrality targets by 2050. This includes investing in short-term efficiency improvements and implementing long-term emissions management programmes.
He noted that the company achieved its highest-ever energy efficiency rates in 2024 and was recognised with the 'Golden Path' award by the United Nations Environment Programme for its efforts to reduce methane emissions – both of which are key indicators of its dedication to low-carbon LNG production.
He pointed out that the company is investing in energy efficiency solutions that support a gradual reduction in emissions, relying on proven and highly cost-effective technologies. All investments aimed at reducing emissions undergo thorough and comprehensive evaluation.
The company is also investing in research and development projects in collaboration with local universities, including studies on hydrogen fusion and a pilot project focused on methane emissions – seen as a starting point for developing clean energy molecules. Naamani underlined that this approach balances enhancing current performance with preparing for a low-emissions future, positioning Oman LNG as a reliable partner in the global energy transition.
On the topic of safety and sustainability leadership, Naamani stated that last year the company recorded over 27mn work hours without a lost-time injury, with no operational safety incidents reported for more than 3,500 days.
Regarding social responsibility and national development, the company's CEO explained that Oman LNG remains committed to allocating 1.5% of its net income after tax to social investment. This includes support for key projects such as the Sur Maritime Museum, the Masar initiative to promote tourism, and the provision of advanced medical equipment to healthcare facilities, including MRI machines and kidney dialysis units. The company also prioritises human capital development through leadership academies, practical training for youth, and initiatives supporting small and medium-sized enterprises.

Britain's Keir Starmer and Oman's Sultan Haitham vow to increase collaboration in energy, tech and defence

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Oman 's Sultan Haitham have agreed to deepen collaboration in energy, technology, defence and security. The leaders met in London for talks that also focused on trade negotiations between the UK and Gulf Co-operation Council. They called for urgent humanitarian aid to reach Gaza, saying the crisis in the enclave "cannot continue", a Downing Street representative said. "The Prime Minister updated His Majesty on his conversations with other leaders in recent days and both agreed on the need for a longer-term peace plan, which includes a pathway to recognition," the representative said. Mr Starmer announced on Tuesday that Britain would recognise a Palestine state in September, unless Israel took steps to improve the situation in Gaza and bring about peace. The move followed a similar announcement by France, while Canada and Malta have also said they plan to recognise Palestine. Sultan Haitham "welcomes the UK's steps towards recognising Palestine, reaffirming Oman's support for a two-state solution and lasting peace in the Middle East", the Oman News Agency reported. "His Majesty the Sultan and the UK Prime Minister explored means of expanding Oman-UK co-operation in trade, investment and regional stability," it added. Discussions also covered Iran, with Mr Starmer thanking Sultan Haitham for Oman's continued efforts to help avoid a return to war in the region. The sultanate has in recent years played a major role in mediation efforts aimed at ending regional conflicts. Oman mediated several rounds of nuclear negotiations between the US and Iran, before those talks were ended by the Israel-Iran war. The sultanate also took the lead in a diplomatic drive involving Qatar, Egypt and Russia that contributed significantly to ending that conflict, sources told The National.

Saudi: Qiwa sets 60-day window before reporting worker as absent under new contract rules

RIYADH — Qiwa platform has introduced updates to the employment contract system that impact how employers can report workers as "absent from work." According to the platform, an employer can only submit such a request if the worker's residency permit (Iqama) is valid for at least 60 days and the worker has no active employment contract at the time of the request. Once a worker's status changes to "disconnected from work," they are given a 60-day window to choose one of the following options: transfer to another employer, exit the Kingdom, or re-contract with the same company. If no action is taken within this period, the worker will automatically be marked as "absent from work" and removed from the company's records. The updated system also stipulates that if the notice period in a work contract ends — whether by the employer's or worker's decision — and the contractual relationship concludes, the contract will be marked as 'terminated.' Failure by the worker to take further action within the grace period will result in an automatic notification to relevant authorities at the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) and the Ministry of Interior. The Ministry previously clarified that Qiwa enables workers to obtain free salary definition certificates through the "Qiwa Individuals" account. If the worker is currently employed, the certificate will reflect current employment information. For past experience, workers can request a service certificate documenting previous roles. To access this feature, workers must log into their Qiwa Individuals account, navigate to services, select "Employment Certificates," and follow the steps to generate either a salary certificate or a certificate of service. The platform also supports enhancing CVs and increasing job competitiveness through official documentation of professional experience. © Copyright 2022 The Saudi Gazette. All Rights Reserved.
