International Yoga Day: Swami Chidanand Saraswati and others perform Yoga at Ganga Ghat in Rishikesh
The event saw participation from foreign guests who had come to Parmarth Niketan from 28 countries. Together, they performed yoga, promoting awareness about its benefits for mental peace and well-being.
Earlier, delegates from different countries arrived in the spiritual city of Rishikesh in Uttarakhand. Among those set to participate in the celebrations on Saturday are Ecuador's Ambassador to India, Fernando Bucheli, and Noriaki Abe, Minister for Political Affairs at the Japanese Embassy in India.
Speaking to ANI, Ambassador Bucheli said, 'It is a real honour for me to be in this spiritual city of Rishikesh. The Parmarth Niketan Ashram is marvellous. I came here to commemorate the International Yoga Day... It is because of the inspiration of PM Modi... Ecuador is very far away, but we are close to India spiritually.'
He highlighted the significance of yoga beyond physical postures, saying it helps 'to join minds and hearts of people,' which he called 'very important in this world because when you join hearts of people, definitely you will get peace in the world.'Bucheli also thanked the event organisers and described his presence in Rishikesh as 'a very honoured, very emotional, deep emotional' experience.
Joining him at the event, Noriaki Abe from Japan, who also shared his connection with yoga. Recalling his participation in last year's International Yoga Day in Tokyo with thousands of Japanese participants, Abe said, 'This year I am blessed with the opportunity once again to join this important and celebrated day in the capital of yoga, such a beautiful city of Rishikesh. I deeply appreciate your hospitality and your strong leadership to unite the world. Yoga is everywhere -- in Tokyo, in Rishikesh, in Delhi.'
Meanwhile, the stage is set for the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) to be celebrated with grandeur on Saturday, June 21, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the national event from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
The theme for this year is 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health' echoes India's vision of global wellness.The theme reflects the integrated vision of well-being. It emphasises the interconnectedness of human and planetary health, drawing from the Indian ethos of 'Sarve Santu Niramaya' (May all be free from disease).
The Prime Minister will perform the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) with over 3 lakh participants at the Visakhapatnam venue, synchronised with over 10 lakh locations across the country under the 'Yoga Sangam' initiative, the Ministry of AYUSH said.
The mass demonstration will be held from 6:30 AM to 7:45 AM, and is expected to witness unprecedented participation from all corners of the country. He will be joined by Union Minister of State (IC) Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, in a massive demonstration of India's global wellness vision.
In an unprecedented mobilisation, more than two crore people are expected to participate in Yoga sessions at over 1 lakh locations across the state. (ANI)

The economist also advised India to take a cautious view of Washington, arguing that New Delhi's long-term interests will not be safeguarded by leaning on the US for defence or trade. "US politicians don't care at all about India. Please understand this. India is not going to reap long-term security by siding with the United States in the Quad against China. India is a great power that has an independent standing in the world," Sachs said. Instead, he pointed to China, Russia and Brazil as India's "real partners," cautioning against the belief that India could seamlessly substitute China in global supply chains. Even if India aids in diversifying US sourcing, Sachs said, it should not expect a "great trade relationship" with Washington. Growth to get lift, boost for demand after GST rationalisation, say economists
Synopsis Economists predict that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rationalization will significantly boost domestic demand, providing crucial support to the Indian economy amidst challenges posed by US tariffs. The simplified tax structure, particularly benefiting essentials, is expected to increase disposable income for lower and middle-income consumers. Domestic demand will get a boost after goods and services tax (GST) rationalisation, economists said, providing support to the economy that's seen likely taking a hit from the 50% duty levied on Indian imports by the US.'At a time where consumption demand has been uneven and felt pressure from high inflation and low nominal wage growth over the last couple of quarters, the proposed GST reforms are a positive, especially for essentials, aiding consumption by the lower and middle income class,' said Sakshi Gupta, principal economist at HDFC Bank. QuantEco Research economist Yuvika Singhal said, 'Any kind of reduction in taxes is positive for consumption as it leaves higher disposable income in the hands of consumers.' Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said in his Independence Day speech on Friday that GST reforms would provide relief to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), local vendors and GST cuts on items will range from durables such as refrigerators and air conditioners to packaged foods and medical supplies. 'It's a much-needed development, and GST rationalisation is the need of the hour, apart from other reforms,' said Paras Jasrai, associate director at India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra). The Centre has proposed that India move to a simpler, two-slab structure from four currently--retaining the 5% and 18% rates and scrapping the 12% and 28% levies, ET reported earlier. 'With indirect taxes having a wider reach, GST reforms can deliver a stronger boost,' said Gaura Sengupta, chief economist at IDFC First Bank. 'Rural consumption is improving but not broad-based enough to offset weak urban demand, so a fiscal push was needed—and these reforms provide that.'Jasrai said that lower stabs and tax rates will give consumption demand a significant boost, especially amid the uncertainty over trade tariffs that are seen impacting external President Donald Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on India, including a 25% penalty for importing Russian oil. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank have cut global growth forecasts amid the prevailing trade uncertainty. An increase in spending activity will also lift gross domestic product (GDP). 'A more notable impact could also be seen for demand for two-wheelers and cars if the current GST rate of 28% is reduced to 18%,' she highlighted that fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies will see a positive impact, depending on how and when the changes are implemented.

Punjab Police raids 301 locations across state, arrests 38 drug smugglers
The raids have resulted in the recovery of 620 grams of heroin and 1612 intoxicant tablets/capsules from the possession of arrested drug smugglers. With this, the number of total drug smugglers arrested has reached 25,909 in 168 days, said an official release. Chandigarh: Continuing the war against drugs 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' waged by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to eradicate drug menace from state consecutively for the 168th day, Punjab Police conducted raids at 301 locations on Saturday leading to the arrest of 38 drug smugglers after registration of 28 first information reports (FIRs) across the state. The operation was conducted on the directions of Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, simultaneously in all 28 Police districts of the state. Notably, CM Bhagwant Mann has asked the Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendent of Police to make Punjab a drug-free state. The Punjab government has also constituted a 5-member Cabinet Sub Committee led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema to monitor the war against drugs. Divulging details, Special DGP Law and Order Arpit Shukla informed that over 100 Police teams, comprising over 900 police personnel, under the supervision of 70 gazetted officers, have conducted raids across the state. Police teams have also checked as many as 316 suspicious persons during the day-long operation, he added. The Special DGP said that with the state government has enforced a three-pronged strategy– Enforcement, Deaddiction and Prevention (EDP)– to eradicate drugs from the state, the Punjab Police as part of 'De-addiction' has convinced 33 persons to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment today. Earlier on Thursday, in a major breakthrough amidst the ongoing drive against organised crime launched on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab Police's Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) arrested two most-wanted operatives of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang from Patiala-Ambala Highway near village Shambhu and recovered an Austrian-made 9mm Glock pistol along with six live cartridges from their possession.
