Le Mans is an iconic and challenging 24-hour endurance race which tests the limits of drivers and cars. This year's event - the 93rd edition - begins on Saturday at 15:00 BST. It's held at the semi-permanent Circuit de la Sarthe, located in Le Mans, France. The track is 8.5 miles (13.6km) long with 38 turns and a mix of high-speed sections and slower corners. The 2025 grid consists of 62 teams, 186 drivers and 13 manufacturers. Ferrari, in the top-tier Hypercar category, are aiming for a third consecutive victory. The two other car classes are LMP2 and LMGT3. All three categories run on the track at the same time. Le Mans forms part of the motorsport triple crown - the prestigious, but notoriously difficult, achievement of winning the 24-hour race, the Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix in Formula 1. Graham Hill - the 1962 and 1968 F1 world champion - is the only driver to win all three.
Who are the big names?

Britain's Jamie Chadwick, the three-time W Series champion, is one of five female racers taking part and runs in the in LMP2 class. MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi, driving in the LMGT3 category, is participating in his second Le Mans having made his debut in the endurance classic last year. Le Man Prototype Two (LMP2) has 17 cars and Le Mans Grand Touring Three (LMGT3) has 24, driven by both professional and amateur drivers.Drivers of each team are categorised into four sections - platinum, gold, silver and bronze. There are four practice sessions, qualifying and hyperpole.Hypercar has its own sessions for qualifying and hyperpole, while LMP2 and LMGT3 contribute in the same sessions. In qualifying, drivers set out to record the fastest lap. The six fastest cars in each class then take part in the hyperpole - where they will aim to perform the fastest lap, which will be their ranking for the race.Hypercar has eight manufacturers - Aston Martin, Porsche, Toyota, Cadillac, BMW, Alpine, Ferrari and Peugeot and uses Michelin tyres. All LMP2 entries will use Oreca 07 cars, with Goodyear tyres.LMGT3 cars also use Goodyear tyres and have nine manufacturers including Corvette, Ford, Lexus, McLaren and Mercedes.

Toyota's New GR Hypercar Concept Is a Hydrogen-Fueled Spectacle

Toyota flexes its hypercar creativity with the GR LH2 Toyota has unveiled its GR LH2 Racing Concept featuring a hydrogen engine paired with a hybrid system at the Circuit de la Sarthe days ahead of the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The GR LH2 is designed to advance the development of hydrogen tech in motorsports and mark the 40th anniversary of the automaker's first Le Mans run. According to Toyota, the GR LH2 is based on its GR010 Hybrid Hypercar used in the World Endurance Championship, which includes the 24 Hours of Le Mans as its flagship event. 0:09 / 0:09 Audi A5 replaces A4: So, what's changed? Watch More While Toyota didn't provide many details on the concept's powertrain or hydrogen system, they were built at Japan's Higashi-Fuji Technical Centre. The chassis, the same as in the GR010, was manufactured at Toyota's Gazoo Racing facility in Cologne, Germany. Toyota's GR LH2 is the GR H2 Concept's successor, and distinguishes itself from its predecessor with new bodywork, such as remodeled side intakes, a taller rear wing, and a larger fin. The LH2 also differs from the GR H2 with its striking white-and-blue livery and smaller front LED lights, but its greenhouse resembles the previous concept. Official measurements for the LH2 are 5100mm (200.7 inches) in length and 2050mm (80.7 inches) in width. Toyota GR LH2 Racing Concept — Source: Toyota GR The minds behind Toyota's GR LH2 Racing Concept 'Toyota has been the pioneer for hydrogen combustion engine technology since 2021 in Super Taikyu racing in Japan,' said Kazuki Nakajima, former F1 driver and Team Director and Vice Chairman of Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe. Toyota's sister team, Rookie Racing, participated in the Japanese Super Taikyu series in 2021 with a gaseous hydrogen-engine Corolla, before switching to a liquid hydrogen-powered car in 2023. In 2022, Toyota displayed the potential of hydrogen engines in rally racing with a GR Yaris H2 at the Ypres Rally in the FIA World Rally Championship. A year later, the hydrogen-engine Corolla completed a demonstration lap at Circuit de la Sarthe, and the GR H2 Racing Concept was showcased to preview a potential hydrogen category at Le Mans. Toyota GR LH2 Racing Concept — Source: Toyota GR The GR H2 was a static concept, but the GR LH2 is a running test car. Nakajima noted that Toyota has been pushing to introduce hydrogen as energy while maintaining a racing engine's noise, sensation, and vibration. Toyota Gazoo Racing endurance driver and team principal Kamui Kobayashi said Toyota's performance division made the GR LH2 to highlight future carbon-neutral possibilities while enhancing its motorsport presence. Since 2021, Toyota has continually built on its hydrogen innovation in motorsport, and the GR LH2's ability to function as a running test car is another significant step. Kamui Kobayashi, Nyck Devries, and Mike Conway will compete for Toyota Gazoo Racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans' Hypercar event from June 14 to 15. About the Author Cody Carlson View Profile

Mercedes' George Russell fastest in second practice for Canadian Grand Prix

The British driver, who took pole position in Montreal last year, edged out McLaren compatriot Lando Norris, with Kimi Antonelli underlining Mercedes' speed to set the third quickest time. Championship leader Oscar Piastri was only sixth, with Lewis Hamilton eighth, one place ahead of Max Verstappen, who had earlier finished fastest in the first running of the weekend. 🏁 END OF FP2 🏁 TOP 10Russell 💨NorrisAntonelliAlbonAlonsoPiastriSainzHamiltonVerstappenLawson#F1 #CanadianGP — Formula 1 (@F1) June 13, 2025 Russell has been one of the grid's standout performers this season with four podium finishes already under his belt, matching the tally he managed for the entire 2024 campaign. At the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Friday, Russell's lap of one minute and 12.123 seconds was the fastest of the day to leave Norris trailing. McLaren have dominated the campaign so far, but in practice here they appeared to be lacking the advantage which has carried them to seven wins from the nine races staged. Norris was in striking range of Russell, just 0.028sec behind the Mercedes man, but Piastri was 0.439sec off the pace, having finished the first practice session in 14th. Williams' Alex Albon took fourth, with Fernando Alonso fifth, but the two-time world champion's Aston Martin team-mate Lance Stroll crashed out. Stroll, who had a medical procedure on a wrist injury which prevented him from contesting the Spanish Grand Prix a fortnight ago, thudded into the concrete wall at turn seven to bring an abrupt end to his session. The Canadian was the day's second major casualty after Charles Leclerc's preparations for the rest of the weekend were dealt a blow when he suffered a heavy accident with just nine laps on the board in first practice. The Monegasque crashed into the barrier on the entry to turn four and sustained significant damage to the left-hand side of his Ferrari. The force of the impact sent him sideways and across the other side of the chicane. 'F***,' said Leclerc on the radio. 'Sorry, I am in the wall. My bad. I should have gone straight, but I thought I would make the corner and I hit the wall.' Leclerc's survival cell on his Ferrari needed replacing which sidelined him for the remainder of the day. His accident marked an underwhelming day for Ferrari which will have done little to lift the gloom around the Italian team with Hamilton 0.530 sec slower than the pace-setting Russell.
